The lineup for the Reds home spring training opener per Scott Springer on 1360am:

Freel - CF
Womack - 2B
Lopez - SS
Dunn - 1B
Aurilia - 3B
Kearns - RF
Larue - C
Snyder - DH
Wise - LF

Good to see Kearns back in the lineup.

Is Griffey gone already? I'd have to assume so, since he isn't on either roster...

I don't think Freel could even find 2b.

I'm really believing we are going to see an everyday lineup with Womack at 2b and Aurilia at 3b.:bang:

Yes, I believe he left yesterday (after his daughter's first ever game).

Why don't we let EE develop in the majors during a "down" year? Sometimes I just don't know.

Why don't we let EE develop in the majors during a "down" year? While it is possible to promote a player to quickly it is also possible to promote too slowly and stifle their development as well. EE was outstanding in AAA last season. Nothing left to prove at that level, he needs to be challenged at the major league level.

Yep, their hesitancy to pencil him at third barring a ST disaster is one of the stranger tales to come out of Reds camp in recent years. Either EE can play at a consistently high level in the majors or he can't. Sitting him behind the craptastic Aurilia isn't going to answer anything, and will only make matters worse. I honestly have less of a problem with Womack at 2nd than I do with Aurilia at third. Awful as Womack is, at least he isn't stifling the development of another younger player there (Freel, I assume, will find his way into the lineup somewhere). Giving Aurilia the 3B nod has the potential to have a detrimental effect on this team for years to come.

Couldn't agree more. There's no way he should be playing in AAA any more. He's ready.

You mean since last year with Lopez...

Well, yes, that would be another "one of the..." tales. Funny how RA seems to be involved in most of them.

flyer85
03-03-2006, 01:01 PM
You mean since last year with Lopez...that was an issue but Lopez never showed as much at AAA as EE did last year. He is a kid who I have little doubt is going to be an all-star. In addition, he has the hands, range and arm to provide gold glove caliber defense as well.

My nightmare is RA at 3B and Womack at 2b on opening day. The best the true fans can seemingly hope for at this point is that RA wins the 2B job in spring training because Womack is a less than zero.

Not only is Womack getting 2nd, but he's going to sabotage a lot of lineups batting 2nd, whoever bats 3rd will more then likely always be batting with 2 outs.

Dandy.

I'm rooting for that scenario at this point. I am convinced that Freel isn't even in the running to be a starter at 2B. Given the choice between RA and Woemack, the choice has to be RA.

Detroit's up 2-0 and we're just about to start the bottom of the 1st. I don't have press pass, so all I know is they didn't score on home runs..... I guess thats progress w/ this pitching staff... way to go Geronimo...

I wouldn't lose sleep over EE traveling down to Ft. Myers, the Reds are supposed to send a number of starters on the road trips. I think EE qualifies as such for that trip.

I have read nothing that gives me the impression that the Reds are doing anything more than trying to avoid handing a 23 year-old the job in the offseason with respect to EE.

Tigers 17, Reds (ss) 10
at Sarasota, Fla.
Friday, March 3
Reds at the plate: In his spring debut at his new position, first baseman Adam Dunn went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run to right-center field in the first inning. Dunn added a one-out double in the fifth. Rich Aurilia added a one-out RBI single in the third inning. Ray Olmedo hit a two-run single during a four-run sixth inning.

Tigers at the plate: Chris Shelton was 2-for-4 and drove in two first-inning runs with a double to left field. Shelton added a solo home run to right field in the fourth. Part of a six-run third inning, Carlos Guillen smoked a three-run triple to right field. Guillen and Magglio Ordonez are getting in all the game action they can before leaving Sunday to play for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic.

Reds on the mound: Battling for a spot in the rotation, starter Justin Germano gave up two runs and four hits over two innings. Germano walked one and struck out two. David Weathers (0-1) had a bumpy one inning, giving up six runs (three earned) on five hits with a hit batter. Seeking a spot on the roster, Luke Hudson gave up a run and a hit on Shelton's homer and walked three batters in two innings.

Tigers on the mound: Left-handed veteran Mike Maroth also gave up two runs and four hits over two innings of work. Maroth did not walk anyone and struck out one. It was a rougher afternoon for Justin Verlander (1-0), who is vying for the fifth spot in Detroit's rotation. Verlander gave up two runs on four hits, but threw two wild pitches that scored a run in the third inning and hit a batter in the fourth.

Grapefruit League records: Reds 0-2; Tigers 2-0.

Up next: On Saturday, Cincinnati heads to Tampa to play the Yankees while Detroit travels to Winter Haven to play AL Central and Polk County spring rival, the Indians.

Encouraging stuff from the game:

Germano 4 ground outs vs. 0 flyouts..... huge in our ballpark (2 SO, 1 BB)
Dunn: 6 TB, 2 run HR and a double.... he hasn't cooled off...

Not so good:

Zero BBs by the team... what gives?
Chick: 36.00 ERA.... hmmmm
Hudson: 3 BB in 2 innings.... he's still struggling
Womack: Error and a GIDP.... but he knows how to play the game...
No hits by Kearns in 3 tries...
Why didn't Pena play?
