Hoo boy

DUNEDIN -- Narron said Milton would throw 30-35 pitches today in his first Grapefruit League appearance. Now it looks like he might need them all to escape the first.

A double, a single and a three-run homer to dead center greeted the Reds' starter, who just retired Troy Glaus on a groundout for the first out of the first inning.

Per Marc's Blog......

DUNEDIN -- Eric Milton's spring training debut is over after two-thirds of an inning.

With a runner on second and two out in the first, Curtis Thigpen popped one down the right-field line. After a long run into foul territory, Austin Kearns reached the ball but couldn't get a hold of it, and it fell foul. When I looked back toward the field, I saw Milton standing along the third-base line and Narron and Tom Hume coming out of the dugout to talk with him. After some discussion, Milton was removed from the game in favor of Chris Michalak, who inherits a 3-2 count. Looks like he might have aggravated that calf strain.

Milton threw 33 pitches, 20 of them strikes. He has allowed four runs so far, with one still out there on the bases, along with four hits and one walk. Not what he or the Reds were looking for today.

If this new organization wants any credibility, it cannot let Eric Milton be in our rotation. Seriously, all jokes aside, Milton is a joke of a pitcher. If he makes the team, it will seriously be very sad.

Kullman had the right idea. Put him in long relief. Bring back Kullman!!!

Groundout and a Sardinha K are the first two outs of the seventh.

Earl Snyder continues the inning with a broken-bat squid infield hit.

Derek Wathan gets ahead 3-0 but lines out to left-center. He must be on the Dodgers hitting philosophy.

TOR 5, CIN 2, middle of 7.

The Lizard stays in for a second inning. He knows how to play the game, see, and since he knew there were more innings to be played (cleverly pointing this out to all those blasted kids in the dugout that thought you just played until someone's mom called them in for dinner), he's rewarded by Jerry Narron.

Ray Olmedo with a great barehand play at short for out number one.

Strikeout called on the second guy, and Chad Mottola steps in. He quickly pops out to third, though.

End of 7- 5-2 Toronto.

Top of 8. A lefty I've never heard of appropriately named Blank is pitching.

Krono: You may not have heard of the remixed version called "God Bless North America". This represents an evolution in belief on the part of the US government; back in the Reagan years Canada was just considered State 51 (or Area 51), depending on how the trade deficit was shaping up.

Tuffy Rhodes is batting. (First two guys made outs while I was blabbering.) Too bad he's not Scrappy Rhodes, or he'd already have that roster spot sewn up. He gets ahead 3-1, but strikes out swinging.

Don't think I've sung that tune during the 7th inning stretch. Good to see one of Casey's descendants mentioned though.

1908 Version

Katie Casey was baseball mad,
Had the fever and had it bad.
Just to root for the home town crew,
Ev'ry sou1
Katie blew.
On a Saturday her young beau
Called to see if she'd like to go
To see a show
But Miss Kate said "No,
I'll tell you what you can do:"

1 The term "sou", now obscure, was at the time common slang for a low-denomination coin. Carly Simon's version, produced for Ken Burns' 1994 documentary on baseball, reads "Ev'ry cent / Katie spent".

Top of 9.

Buck Buchanan manages a seeing-eye single up the middle. Andy Abad walks. Chris Denorfia comes up. He'll be bunting. Somehow, he fails to get the bunt down (more tutelage needed in AAA on how to play the game) and walks, loading the bases.

Steve Torrealba now batting. He grounds a base hit to left, scoring one. 6-3 Jays, still no one out.

From Marc

DUNEDIN -- Took a while, but we finally talked with Milton a few minutes ago. His right calf was heavily wrapped in ice, and you can guess what his mood was like.

"It’s hard for me to use my calf as an excuse for the way I was pitching," he said. "If I can throw the ball, I’m going to go out there and throw the ball. I’m not looking for a reason to come out of the game, that’s for sure."

Does he need to shut it down for a while to make sure he's healed completely before going back on the mound?

"For me, I’ve got to be out there. After today, I want to go back out there tomorrow and pitch. I’ve got to listen to the doctors and the trainers and do what they say, but if it was up to me, I’d be pitching tomorrow. Today was pretty much an embarrassment to me."

It'd have to be like a Graves thing where he'd be designated for assignment. He'd have to clear waivers first. I'm sure he'd clear waivers but then it would be up to him whether to be a free agent of be assigned to LOU or wherever. And would we really want to foist him off on the good citizens of Louisville? ;)

Now if you're asking if he could be do extended Spring Training, that's another story. He'd have to be somewhat injured and I think he could only stay there so long. Plus I believe they would need his permission for that and I doubt he'd give it.

Total embarrassment to the franchise. Be gone. Money where your mouth is, Casty baby. The best idea for Milton is to package him in the inevitable Kearns or Pena deal and eat some of the cash. I can imagine someone would take a flyer for about half of his remaining contract over the next couple of years and we save a few bucks ourself. What would really help the situation is if he got off to an anomalic start and had an ERA somewhere in the high 3s to low 4s at the end of April. Start a big PR push about how his knee is doing well and that the simple idea of moving his position on the rubber has made all the difference.

C'mon Wayne, get busy with those big ballpark teams ;)

I know what you're saying about being definitive. I just see it as a sunk cost issue. They're already paying him all that money regardless. Might as well abuse him in long relief instead of the next Brian Reith. Starting him just creates future long relief opportunities. Using him in meaningful situations from the bullpen will net lines similar to yesterday's.

Obviously it would have been better to never sign him, but that is not Kriv's fault, and he has gotta clean up this mess the best he can. Ideally he would get someone to take even 1/3 of his salary.

I am not against just dropping the guy ... but I'd try a few things with him first as its not probable the Reds are going to make the playoffs this season, nor would he be holding up any young talent from getting their chance to take their knocks. If the Reds were even a 25-35% chance to make the playoffs I wouldn't even consider it.

1) Can we teach the guy something unusual? How about pitching sidearm or learning the forgotten split-fingered fastball?

2) Can we nurse him through enough outings in the 1st 1/2 of the season in order to get someone to bite on ANY of his contract? If he has 5 decent innings in, pull him before he can put the 1st two guys on in the sixth, especially if the meat of the order is coming up. If you let him in, bring in one of your better relievers to make sure he gets out of the inning without letting any of the inherited runners score.

3) Send him to Mike Marshall and tell him its Miltons last chance and his first. Get to work. ;)

I know that seams like quite a bit of work to get 5-6M savings out of Milton, but if the guy somehow pitches 4.75 ball somebody would take a chance on him. If its not going well early, it'd be easy enough to go ahead and dump him then.

Just have payroll fix the "glitch" in paying Milton. Then let it resolve itself naturally.
