I guess anything goes as long as Dunn doesn't play 1B? :dunno:

I'm glad he didn't play in the WBC so he could get time in at 1B. Besides, with Randy Winn and Matt Holliday, the US squad is set anyways............

I think if you switch Jr for Freel and Hatteberg for Aurillia, that's your Opening Day lineup vs RH pitchers.

Going to be interesting to see how they work this, but I don't think Dunn will see more than 50% of his starts at 1B this year, at least that's what I'm gathering from his lack of playing time there this spring.

Perhaps he's already fielding the position at a J.T. Snow level? ;)

Hopefully it's just that they don't think he needs the time there.

Though I did read that he's still working every day with Chambliss on 1B, which was one of the reasons he didn't make the road trip to Ft. Myers.

After reading that, I was still left wondering why he doesn't actually play that position more often. You'd think that they would want to see how much all his work with Chambliss is paying off, and you just don't know until he's actually playing the position in a game situation.

The whole thing is a headscratcher.

I figured he's practicing at it every day. But you just can't always simulate game conditions in practice even though the Reds are probably doing the best they can. Right now, it's not a big deal since he'd only play 3-4 innings anyway but if he's playing OF or DH more often beginning next week, that's when something might be up.

Something seems to be brewing. With the Kata signing and what is going on with Dunn and all the utility guys. I have no idea, but it just seems some kind of move is on the horizon. Wily Mo gone? Who knows.

I wouldn't trade Freel unless it's some good pitching coming back our way.

He's cheap, he can leadoff (something nobody else on this team can do) and he can play a lot of spots.

If Ryan Freel is deemed more expendable then cutting Tony Womack, I am liable to spew that WayneK is no better than DanO.

I swear the next time I hear that Ryan Freel is worse than Tony Womack in this organization's eyes, I am liable to just scream.

Lets get rid of a guy who has 5-7 years ahead of him for a guy who's never had a prime, but is a National League-type player.

It may be a case of who can bring more to the trading table... but it better be a pitcher... a decent pitcher, because Freel is definiately more valuable to this team than (I don't want to break a rule)... some others on this team!

When this is all said and done, we're going to have to publish a translation FAQ so that new members will understand posts like the following:

"I'm so sick of this guy just grounding into a Casey play after Casey play when he's got RISP. We need more Milton hitters in this lineup and less scrappiness. I loathe this signing"

I'd rather see Denorfia get the PT over Hatteberg. If Pena gets traded, just leave Dunn at 1B and put Denorfia in the OF. Playing Hatteberg regularly does nothing to improve the Reds.

I guess the logic could be to give Hatteburg the time now because when the WBC is over and Spring training winds down, there will be no SS games and the regulars will need all the time they can get.

The thing about Freel is that it is hard to put him in at 2B because of his glove. And its hard to put him in the OF because of his lack of power (and arm). I guess that's why he's the super-sub.

If they can't figure out how to use him, they'll probably trade him. (just sayin').

I don't know if he's "far superior" in the field but I seriously doubt he's substantially worse and given Freel's superiority on offense it really is a no brainer IMO.

Seems that Wagner has settled down his last few outings. To me, he and Kearns have been my biggest concerns this spring (letting the rest of you sweat the 2b battle and our woeful starting 5 doesn't need mentioning).

VERY glad to see Wags doing much better of late.

Its ST - same way Harang got the win on Sunday(?). For ST its a minimum of 2 with the lead which is never surrendered.

I think your seeing the bullpen get a work out now to see who is getting those spots. Was the veterans day today.

And does someone have the box score - For a game thread it was seriously lacking info. Thanks for those who kept us in touch.

Dunn homers in Reds' win over Bucs
Claussen gives up two runs in start; Wagner sharp in relief
By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

Reds 7, Pirates 2
at Sarasota, Fla.
Thursday, March 16

Reds at the plate: Adam Dunn led off the fourth inning with a home run to right-center field. It was Dunn's second long ball of the spring. Edwin Encarnacion was 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Felipe Lopez was 1-for-3 with an RBI single to left field. Dan Sardinha's two-out bloop single to shallow right field scored two more runs in the seventh.

Pirates at the plate: Catcher Ryan Doumit hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot to left field with one out in the second inning. Rajai Davis singled in the third inning and scored on Sean Casey's groundout.

Reds on the mound: Starter Brandon Claussen pitched four innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits. Claussen walked one and struck out four. Competing for a bullpen spot, reliever Ryan Wagner was sharp during a 1-2-3 fifth inning and used just nine pitches.

Pirates on the mound: Pitching on just three days' rest, left-hander Zach Duke allowed one run and two hits over three innings. Duke walked one and struck out three. It was a rougher day for Ryan Vogelsong, who gave up four earned runs and seven hits over his three innings. Vogelsong walked two and struck out four. Roberto Hernandez allowed two runs, two hits and two walks in one inning and struck out one.

Grapefruit League records: Reds 9-7; Pirates 9-7.

Up next: The Reds travel to Dunedin to play the Blue Jays on Friday at 1:05 p.m. ET. The Pirates return to McKechnie Field for a game against the Indians.
