Thanks to those of you who had access to the game and gave us the blow by blows. I got a headache just reading the Welshisms, but then you folks in the midwest didn't have to listen to Ron Darling last summer (he's now left the Nats and will be doing Mets games).

Good inning by Coffee -- I liked his pitch sequences there, getting ahead of Mauer 0-2 and then throwing some junk down in the zone and then getting him to K on a solid fastball.

I think you have to regard Coffee as a good candidate for set-up man with, perhaps, a move to the closer's role if he dominates hitters. He hasn't shown me enough to nominate him as closer, but on pure stuff, he belongs at the back end of ballgames.

I think the best candidate on this roster for the closer's role is Matt Belisle. He can match Coffey's 93 MPH fastball and I like his composure out there on the mound. He wingled out of some tough jams last year. (Good point M2, maybe wiggled would have been a better word...)

The best part of the game tonight was Milton's performance. That looked like the Eric Milton we were supposed to get last year. He was firing in nice 93 MPH fastballs with some pop. I'm not worried about his calf injury anymore. Looks like we've got 4 members of our starting rotation set.

I'd like to see an 11 man pitching staff start the year with the bullpen consisting of Weathers, Coffey, Belisle, Shackelford, Mercker and Hammonds. If they end up losing a young pitcher to waivers (like Shackelford) in order to keep a journeyman like Burns or White I won't be pleased.

Just got back from watching this at my parents who can get fsn ohio. If you have it dvr'ed or recorded go back and slow down that last pitch. It was his splitter. Had a small arguement with my dad as he didn't think it was until he rewound and slow motioned it. Just wanted to let you guys know he will still bring it out on occasion.

No its "Milton" from the movie office space. I was making a lame attempt at humor...Milton=Eric Milton get it? Anyhow this milton works in an office and gets pissed whenever someone takes his stapler. So whoever took Eric Miltons stapler that pissed him off enough to strike out 6 please keep it up.:p:

Just another thought to note what others have said. I know that one ST start a season does not make, but I want to see this Eric Milton on the mound all year. Most especially, it's good to see he's over the nagging ankle (?) injury he's been nursing most of spring. Milton succeeding means tons for the Reds.

Okay, not many people give Jerry Narron much credit, but I'll credit him for a bit of humor. Today's Enquirer quotes him about putting Matt Kata in the outfield, saying he just put him out there to see if he'd say "I'm not playing in the outfield". Good one.

Shows you what an overvalued stat the "save" can be that Shackleford got one for that ugly performance.

Re: Milton, nothing is ever determined based off of the results of one ST game, but the fact that he's able to hit 93-94 with his fastball is certainly an encouraging sign. An Eric Milton who can give the Reds 200 IP of 4.50 pitching would help this team significantly.

I am so glad he is back to just letting the old 4 seamer rip, and if that knee can hold up...oh man, I better slow down.

RE: Shackleford, there's a lot of lefties in camp. Last night's performance may have just got his ticket stamped to Louisville to start the season. He was all over the place.
