Happy birthday President Washington, I'm guessing that Fox Sports Ohio is not celebrating this lineup for tonight. Think many people will tune out after the first inning? No Griff, No Dunn, No EE and Milton on the mound. At least Freel's at 2nd leading off. I'm sure that makes some happy. Of course that Aurilia, Cruz 3-4 combo in the middle of the order might just make some people's eyes roll. Gotta love spring training road games.

From Marc's blog...

SARASOTA -- Before I head out the door...

Reds
Ryan Freel 2B
Dewayne Wise CF
Rich Aurilia SS
Jacob Cruz DH
Austin Kearns RF
Jason LaRue C
Andy Abad 1B
Frank Menechino 3B
Matt Kata LF
Eric Milton P

Twins
Shannon Stewart LF
Luis Castillo 2B
Joe Mauer C
Rondell White DH
Torii Hunter CF
Justin Morneau 1B
Tony Batista 3B
Lew Ford RF
Jason Bartlett SS
Scott Baker P

Also, Dave Ross is expected to be in uniform tonight. He's inherited the 54 jersey from Luke Hudson, apparently.

Edited to include the Twinkies lineup.

Well, my enthusiasm for watching tonight's game just dropped about three levels.

:(

Oh well...Saturday's game is on and we'll get to see the debut of Bronson Arroyo.

Twinks starter Scott Baker went to Oklahoma State. I wonder if Coach Colvard knows him well...? Quite a prospect, and one that figures to spend a lot of time in Minnesota's rotation.

Reds bat in the top of the first.

Freel. Goes hacking and bounces out immediately. Lessons from T-Woe? One down.

Wise. Bounces almost quickly to second, two outs.

Aurilia. Batting where he should be. (Ducks tomato) 2-2 count, then a foul. Waves at the offspeed ball down, see ya.

0-0 after 0.5.

Heath, that's funny, but without Mr. Butterworth, these waffles don't get sticky. Perhaps you are just a master of irony.

MILTON TAKES THE MOUND THE CROWD GOES WILD

with anticipation. The Christians are ready and the lions hungry!

Stewart. STRIKE CALLED! STRIKE AGAIN! (Rest on your laurels, buddy.) High and tight, ball one. A foul ball is "fisted" into the Reds dugout. Ow. SWING AND A MISS! Shannon might have undiagnosed glaucoma. Nevertheless, he retires immediately and takes up ice fishing. One out.

Castillo. High, ball one. SWING AND A MISS! CALLED STRIKE TWO! Down low, count evens. STRIKE THREE CALLED ON THE FASTBALL! Man, lightning!

Mauer. 1-1 count. Just missing, and not by much. Grounder to second, easy out!

Top of 2.

Jacob Cruz fouls off a couple to hang in, but looks at a breaking pitch on the inside corner. Two Ks for Baker. One out.

Kearns. Strike called. Easy grounder to third to finish him. Two outs.

Blabber about the World Baseball Classic obscures the action, but Jason LaRue visits familiar territory by falling behind 0-2, then striking out swinging.

Bottom of 2. Milton out to do it again.

Missed the first out due to bodily functions. The second too.

Justin Morneau, slugger of Team Canada, in to keep the Twins from embarrassing themselves any further.

But two good changeups put him in an 0-2 hole, then strike three is called on the inside corner. He immediately goes looking for an appropriate precipice.

Four Ks for Eric through 2. Incredible. 0-0 still.

Cruz was a solid pinch-hitter the past year - but I would probably take Wise right now. I think Jacob Cruz will do some team some good. He's a non-roster invite - so an outright release would be in order.

Top of 3.

Andy Abad leads off. Works the count to 3-1 (first time at three for Baker today), then waves at a change to run the count full. Foul. Big fly to deep center, but Torii Hunter ranges back to make the catch. One out.

Shut Up Frankie utilizes his main skill and draws a walk on four straight.

Kata. Ball's high. Throw over to curb the speed demon Menechino. Ball's even higher. Ball's high a third time. Finally a strike. High drive hammered to right-center, but Lew Ford makes the catch. Two outs.

Freel. Shows bunt, takes strike one. Foul, strike two. Menechino almost gets picked off. Foul again. Strike three called, inning over.

0-0 after 2.5.

Kata's not the world's worst hitter, but he's not going to draw a lot of walks or put up a decent OBP without a lucky-high batting average. The question is this: does Menechino's better OBP outweigh Kata's better pop and versatility? Honestly, for a backup player, I don't think so.

Batista, Ford, and Bartlett in the third for Minnesota.

Batista takes strike one, then strike two. Popup foul. Dirt, a ball. SWING AND A MISS HE STRUCKIMOUT! Five for Eric.

Make way for the Miltonganger!

Ford. Either the crowd hates his guts or it's just his first name used as a cheer. Hit hard off the 3B Menechino, picked up by Aurilia, but throw is not in time. Infield single, first hit of the game for anyone.

Bartlett. Fly to right-center, gloved by Wise. Two outs.

Stewart. He unretires to give this a second chance. Strike. Ball outside. Liner to left gets by Kata and goes to the wall! Run scores, but a good relay throw from Aurilia nails Stewie at third base.

1-0 Twins after 3. Sounded like Kata played that one into what it was more than anything.

Lew Ford has to go to the wall for Aurilia's drive. One down.

Second man retired while I try to formulate my 25-man roster. That was apparently Wise getting robbed by Morneau.

Cruz. Gets ahead 3-0. Strike finally called. Draws the two-out free pass.

Kearns. Ball. Failed check evens the count. Strike called. Foul to the opposite field. Very manly of him. Grounded foul to third. Ball's inside. In the dirt, full count. Cruz will be running, so he'll get to third if there's a double. 3-2 pitch SWUNG ON AND MISSED!

Middle of the fourth, 1-0 Twinks.

Bottom of 4. This'll be it for me.

Castillo watches a ball, then a strike. Taken outside, ball two. Foul back evens it up. Broken-bat flare drops into left for a base hit.

Mauer. Strike taken. Jammed popup circus-caught by Aurilia (guess he had to take four or five steps) for the out. One down.

Rondell White. 0-2 count. FASTBALL TAKEN ON THE INSIDE CORNER STRIKE THREE! Six Ks for Eric. Two outs.

Did I miss an out? I must have. I must focus better before the season starts.

1-0 Twins after 4.

I wouldn't be surprised if you were right. So my tentative 25-man roster is still a work in progress.

You will notice that I have Freel at 2B and Womack on the bench. This is because I naively still believe in the inherent goodness of mankind!

My ideas for the 25-man roster:

Starting Lineup
2B Ryan Freel
SS Felipe Lopez
CF Ken Griffey, Jr.
LF Adam Dunn
RF Austin Kearns
3B Edwin Encarnacion
1B Scott Hatteberg/Rich Aurilia (platoon)
C Jason LaRue
<pitcher>

Bench
C Javier Valentin
INF Rich Aurilia
2B Tony Womack
OF/1B Jacob Cruz
OF Chris Denorfia

Rotation
Aaron Harang RHP
Brandon Claussen LHP
Bronson Arroyo RHP
Eric Milton LHP
Dave Williams LHP

Bullpen
David Weathers RHP
Kent Mercker LHP
Chris Hammond LHP
Matt Belisle RHP
Todd Coffey RHP
Rick White RHP
Brian Shackelford LHP

I think I would replace White with Wagner, Womack with Kata, and hope we pick up a real starting 1st baseman that would replace Cruz on the roster. Otherwise I think that sounds pretty good.

I wouldn't mind seeing Wagner and Kata instead of White and Womack. But I'm OK with the current 1B platoon of Hatteberg/Aurilia (though I would rather see Aurilia get more of the PT), as long as they hit in the #7 spot in the order, and it is only a stopgap measure until a legitimate first baseman is found.

On big Rob does anyone know how he is going in minor league camp?

On the lineup situation based on how ST is going I think there are two open spots on the bench and maybe one in the bullpen. I think Krivsky has shown he is not afraid to DFA someone if it will do good and Kullman really stuffed it in bring in Rick White on a guaranteed contract.

The bench is essentially Freel as the supersub, Valentin, Aurilla and I think the space belongs to either another catcher/infield sub and an outfielder. Given that Aurilla will be covering the corner spots Kata is really competing with Ross and Larue/Valentin performance over next couple of weeks to see how things go. The outfield position is Wise/McCracken/Deno.

Bullpen I would say Shackelford/Burns and Robbins are competing for White's spot.

Good inning by Coffee -- I liked his pitch sequences there, getting ahead of Mauer 0-2 and then throwing some junk down in the zone and then getting him to K on a solid fastball.

I think you have to regard Coffee as a good candidate for set-up man with, perhaps, a move to the closer's role if he dominates hitters. He hasn't shown me enough to nominate him as closer, but on pure stuff, he belongs at the back end of ballgames.

Hey, lurking tonight is CoffeyBro - after a fantastic outing by the Big Guy wearing #56. - Send him our good wishes!
