actually, 96 stolen bases in one minor league season is nothing to sneeze at, nor is 50+ in a season in the bigs. If we trade Griff at the deadline, he has the range to play center if his elbow heals well.

He's a horrible hitter(.702 career OPS) with most of his hits being of the infield variety, and despite his speed, he is horrible in centerfield. He should not appear in a game with the Reds this year.

IIRC, Sanchez is regarded as one of the worst people in baseball. I've even come to wonder if Cuba demanded he defect.

If he learns to be more selective and take some walks then you could have an ELITE leadoff man. In fact if he would take 58 walks instead of 29 then his OBP goes to .377 and I guarantee that extra 29 times on first would put him at 50+ SB. I'll take a flyer.

Guys its a MLC hes not even likely going to get a call to the big club at all unless injuries merit and hes probably about 3rd on that list. Plus you never know when you might have someone that another team wants at the deadline.

That's a huge if, though. That's saying, if he doubles his walk rate, he won't suck as bad.

His OBP is .330 and his SLG% is 370. In addition he gets thrown out 30% of the time when he tries to steal. BP did a story on Alex and the most empty BA in majors during his 2004 campaign with the Tigers. The Tigers released a .320 hitter, how could that be?

Fully 20 out of his 65 hits--over 30%--have come without a full swing of the bat. Leading the universe in bunt hits might get Sanchez a lot of press, but it actually diminishes his value, because 99% of bunt hits result in runners advancing only one base. (This explains why, in situations with a man on second base, and no one at third, Sanchez has six hits--and only four RBIs.) Giving Sanchez extra credit because he has so many bunt hits is like giving Barry Bonds extra credit because so many of his walks are intentional.

How overrated is Sanchez as a leadoff hitter? Let's put it this way: he's on pace to finish with 206 hits, and only 79 runs scored. Only three players in major-league history have tallied that many hits, and scored so few runs. And none of them batted leadoff for a team that ranked fifth in the league in runs scored, in an era of high offense.

So to answer the riddle that spawned this unholy column: does Sanchez have the emptiest batting average of all time? By some measures, yes. By some measures, not quite.

But give him time. It's still early.
