I know it's not their style, but it would be interesting to see Wily Mo hit behind a good OBP/speed guy in order to limit the number of breaking pitches he'll see. Something tells me Youkilis isn't going to be running much though.

We have a hard enough time reminding people *here* of that. Our pitching just blows, pure and simple.

By the end of it, Dan O'Brien was actually right about the types of pitchers we need (groundball types)- he just didn't sign any of them.

They don't even have a good OBP/speed, seriously. Crisp is their only speed guy, and his OBP isn't terrible, but I wouldn't call it good, at least not yet. The real lineup without Bard goes Lowell, Pena, Youkilis, Gonzalez. Should be a lot of Ks there.

I think the ballpark has a little to do with our pitchers sucking as well. For one a Pitcher here can pitch 6 AWESOME innings then a few walks and a HUGE HR lol

Arroyo faces the Sox lineup in the bottom of the first.

Crisp. Smacks one into right for a base hit.

Loretta. Bronson gets ahead 0-2, then misses by a hair with the next one. Misses again. ARROYO MAKES A WILD PICKOFF THROW AND CRISP GOES TO THIRD! Just terrible. High popup to first, and Hatteberg grabs it in foul ground. One out.

Nixon. Check swing, ball one. Grounder foul. Ball two. Foul fly to left, 2-2. GOOD FASTBALL UP GETS THE STRIKEOUT!

ManRam. Strike called. Ball one. Foul out of play, 1-2. STRIKE THREE CALLED ON THE INSIDE EDGE!

Wow, nice recovery by Arroyo. Very impressive.

0-0 after 1.

Aurilia. 0-2 count after a foul. Ball one. AND HE POUNDS ONE TO STRAIGHTAWAY LEFT GONE! 1-0 Reds, just like that.

Cruz. Ball one. Sharply hit grounder, SNAGGED BY YOUKILIS! Toss to Wakefield, and Jacob is robbed! Two outs.

Kearns. Grounds out to end the inning.

Johnny Obvious on to provide scintillating and cogent analysis in the bottom of 2.

Lowell. 2-1 count. Strike two called. Line drive smacks Arroyo right in the butt and rolls to a stop by third base. Infield single.

Youkilis. Strike one called. Line drive single. Two on, nobody out.

Pena. Swing and a miss, struck him out, appropriately enough. One down.

Bard. Quickly 0-2. Inside, a ball. Grounder to short becomes a 6-4-3 double play! Crisis averted again.

Fay thinks Brian Buchanan will make the team. That still isn't gonna happen, at least on April 3rd. He also thinks Jacob Cruz will make it also. BZZZT!

Top of 3.

First guy pops out to shallow left.

Ross. Apparently hit his first big-league homer off esteemed fireballer... Mark Grace. Heh. Bouncer to the left side, quickly gobbled up by Alex Gonzalez. Two outs.

Freel. Hitting .164, but has more spring steals than anyone else in the bigs. Ball one. Called strike. Fouled away. Low, ball two. Strikeout swinging. First for Wake.

1-0 Reds after 2.5.

Bottom of 3. Man, Butterworth loves him some Dead Milkmen.

ESPN is cannibalizing their own audience with all this steroid talk. Soon someone will have to eat Sir Peter's minstrels. Sorry, Buster Olney, you are the weakest link.

Gonzalez. Quick popout. One down.

Crisp. He's still crunchy in milk. Full count. Hit deep to center, but Freel's there for the catch. Two outs.

Loretta. Flies quickly to right-center, where Austin Kearns makes the play.

1-0 Reds after 3. This is going better than I thought it would.

NJReds

I'm so tired of hearing about steroids.

Agreed. Baseball didn't just turn a blind eye to steriods; MLB embraced steroids with it's McGwire/Sosa lovefest back in '98, when the league was trying to get back in the fans good graces.

Now someone writes a book -- a few sponsors start to squirm --and the league gives a Crisis PR 101 response by opening up a sham of an investigation that at best will produce a response that could be summed up as: "Whoops...our bad"

Take away Bonds records? Doubtful. Prove that the pitchers he faced weren't jucing. They didn't take away the Reds 1919 World Series title? Why would they start erasing the recordbook.

Baseball is, and will always be about money. As long as they're making boatloads of cash, everything else (including integrity) goes out the window.

Lopez (0-1). Called strike. Away, count evens. Knuckler misses high, 2-1. Dirt, ball three. He walked him! First one for Wakefield so far.

Encarnacion (0-1). Strike called. RIPPED INTO LEFT-CENTER! Base hit. First and second, no outs.

Hatteberg (0-1). Taken strike. Hmmm, a trend. Outside, ball one. Called strike two. Bounced foul. Strikeout swinging. One out.

Aurilia (1-1, HR). Real men carry three gloves with them everywhere. Tapped foul, 0-1. Foul fly to left, another shot. 0-2. Another foul. Another strikeout swinging. Two down.

Cruz. Grounder to first again, again turned into an out by Kevin Youkilis.

Doc Scott does spectacular PBP, if he is doing it, we all will be happy.

Btw, got to see Arroyo's first inning of work over lunch...pleasantly surprised by the variance in speeds he was getting. The fastball is by no means overpowering, but mixed in with that slow breaking ball, kept them off balance.

As one on the Wily Mo side of the fence, I was pleased, and am willing to reconsider my grumpy stance if we get an Arroyo here who can be 4.25 or better in ERA with around 130 Ks.

If Aurilia's content with a supportive role, then he's welcome on this team as far as I'm concerned. He's still got some punch in his bat, and his 'D is at least better than Womack's.

Trawt (0-1). Popup foul, but out of play. Called strike two. STRUCK HIM OUT SWINGING AGAIN! One out, four Ks for Arroyo.

Manny (0-1). WAVES AT THE CHANGE! A foul, then a ball. STRUCK HIM OUT SWINGING AGAIN AGAIN! Two outs, five Ks.

Lowell (1-1). Breaking ball strike. Inside, ball. Foul tip, 1-2. Slider outside. SWING AND A MISS ON THE BREAKING BALL!

Top of 5. Dustan Mohr now in LF for Manny, who's embarrassed.

Mike Timlin now pitching. Hey, he could be discussing ragtime with the Reds' bullpen.

Marty busts Steve's balls over scoping chicks in the stands. Heh.

On a serious note, Vern Ruhle is staying in Sarasota for cancer treatment. Lee Tunnell will be interim bullpen coach, Tommy Hume acting pitching coach, and Mario Soto pitching coach for the Louisville Bats (!). What, no Browning?

Kearns (0-1). 2-2 count. Liner to left, base hit!

Grandmaster B (0-1). Pickoff throw almost catches Kearns napping. Swung on and missed. Timlin and Bard not singing the same tune, apparently.

Ross.

Crap, missed the rest. Stupid work. But no runs, I don't think.

I got to see the first 3 innings on my lunch hour, live about 5 minutes from work.

Observations:

Glad I had to go back to work anyhow as they announced they were gonna show the presser. Overkill and I would have been cussing in my head if not out loud, so sin nonetheless.

Bard looks like LaRue did trying to catch Fernandez. Hopefully he'll catch up, but Wakefield looked like he was starting to get frustrated. Sometimes, he didn't even try to catch it with no one on base, which could cost some strike calls since umps don't like calling strikes on balls catchers miss regardless of where they are in the zone.

Aurilia just uncoiled on a knuckler. An absolute shot.

Arroyo looked like he was getting in a groove in the third, and indeed struck out the side in the fourth. Looked like a totally different pitcher than last Sat. Hopefully that's the one we see when it counts. His movement is as advertised, plus he keeps the hitters off balance.

One final thing. Brian Buchanan needs the Manzierre. Maybe I'll let him have one of mine if he makes the team.

Arroyo looked like he was getting in a groove in the third, and indeed struck out the side in the fourth. Looked like a totally different pitcher than last Sat. Hopefully that's the one we see when it counts. His movement is as advertised, plus he keeps the hitters off balance.

He's a pretty good pitcher, not a great one. You'll see both of those Arroyos, but more of this one.

Top of 6. Julian Tavarez pitching. He still slightly resembles Freddy Krueger.

Freel (0-2). Fastball, taken strike. Swing and a miss, 0-2. High fly to right; it's right at Wily Mo so count it. One out.

Lopez (0-1, BB). Ball one. Strike called. High, ball two. High, ball three. Foul, count's full. Lined into center, base hit! Four safeties for Cincinnati.

Encarnacion (1-2). They play him to pull because he's not yet a man. 1-2 count. High fly to left, gloved by Mohr. Two down.

Hatteberg (0-2). Some pickoff throws. Ball's low. Strike. Pickoff throw by Bard alllllmost gets Lopez. Grounded foul. Check swing, 2-2. Lopez goes, and it's punched into right-center for a base hit! Felipe to third.

Aurilia (1-2, HR). 1-1. Called strike two. High and away, 2-2. Ball three runs the count full. Aurilia's eye is praised. Man, does Marty love this guy. BALL FOUR! They're loaded for...

Cruz (0-2). Inside, ball one. Ball two. BALL THREE! Called strike. SWING AND A MISS AT BALL FOUR! Full count. Grounder to second, easy out.

Reds 1, Red Sox 0 after 5.5.

Papelbon and Foulke both scheduled to pitch today.

Bottom of 6. Eleven in a row retired by Arroyo to this point.

Gonzalez. 1-2 count, following a first-pitch breaking ball strike. Lot of those today. Foul. STRUCK HIM OUT ON THE BAD JUNK AWAY! Eight Ks, twelve in a row.

Crisp (1-2). Fly to center, caught by new CF Norris Hopper.

Liner caught by Menechino to end the inning! Fourteen in a row.

1-0 Reds after 6.

Frankie Menechino is now at third base. Marty is talking about how Marge Schott had bats used by Terry Francona, Sal Butera, and Max Venable in her collection. He reminisces about Francona's legendary .227/.266/.295 1987 (http://www.baseball-reference.com/f/francte01.shtml) and how Terry hit a three-run homer off Floyd Youmans and drove in five runs on Opening Day, then finished with nine for the season. Man, looking over Terry Francona's career stats... Marty's right. He did suck.

Kearns (1-2). Swings through the first one. Count runs to 2-2. Struck him out swinging.

Bedwetter B (0-2). Grounder past third into left, base hit! He's 22 for 40 on the spring.

Ross (0-2). 1-1 count; called strike two. Strikeout swinging, and Buchanan avoids the pickoff attempt at first. Two outs.

Norris Hopper. 2-2 count. Strikeout swinging.

1-0 Reds after 6.5.

First pitch is popped up by Nixon, and caught in foul ground by Dave Ross. One out.

Mohr. He's greeted with a called strike. Ball one. Swing and a miss on the breaking ball. High, ball two. CALLED STRIKE THREE! Nine strikeouts.

Lowell. Falls behind 2-0 for what might be the first time all day. Called strike on the breaking ball. Another called strike. Outside, full count. Fouled back. Outside, ball four. The string is broken. Pinch-runner is Duran.

Youkilis. Taken strike. Bouncer to third, gloved by Menechino, and a good strong throw gets him! Inning over.

Lopez walks leading off, with Jeff Bannon pinch-running. 2-1 to Menechino. Announcers talking about steroids.

Check swing strike and it's 2-2 on Frankie. Hey, Marty, take Frankie's nickname as advice- SHUT UP. Everyone agrees- steroids suck and are a mess. Thank you.

Ball three, count's full. Marty compares Delcarmen to Luke Hudson, who will be making the Royals, because he throws a buttload of pitches. Ouch and ouch. Bannon swipes second base. Ball four to Frankie, and two on with nobody out.

Hatteberg. Ball one. Manny does certainly resemble Hudson, that's true. HIT DEEP TO LEFT-CENTER AND IT'S IN THE GAP! One run scores, Menechino to third!

2-0 Reds. Yep, Hudson.

Andy Abad pinch-hitting. Gary Patchett running for Hatteberg. Marty pronounces the last name like Cate Blan-CHETT. Heh.

Abad. Chopper slowly hit right side, and the flip to the pitcher gets the out. Not so wise to go hacking on the first pitch.

Cruz (0-3). Ball one. Ball two. Ahh, Luke, we missed you. Swing and a miss. I miss some stuff, but I think Jacob struck out, because Marty goes on about how he's not helping himself.

Kearns waves at a fastball. He's a disappointment too, according to Marty. Bad spring. AND KEARNS SLAPS A BASE HIT, SCORING TWO! Yeah, eff you too, Marty. 4-0 Reds.

Buchanan grounds quickly to third.

He has a good eye, he gets on-base a fair amount, and gets enough lift that he will hit his share of longballs at GABP. He's not a zero, he's just not. Ross (0-3). 0-2 after a swinging strike. Foul. Struck him out swinging.

Hopper (0-1). Grounder wide of first, two outs.

Bannon. Marty talks about how the Reds have brought in a few minor-leaguers to fill out the bench, and how Chris Denorfia went from that extra spring guy to a real prospect. 1-1 count on Jeff. Foul straight back. Ball two. Inside, ball three. Jeff doesn't draw many walks normally, but then again, he doesn't normally steal a ton of bases either. Hard lineout ends the frame.

I had a buddy call me from the game and watched Wily Mo in batting practice and just said awesome, but the fact is he does it in batting practice and I'm so glad this FO had the balls to trade potential for quality and todays outing shows we picked a pitcher who can pitch a little.
