Lineup per Marc:

Frank Menechino 2B
Edwin Encarnacion 3B
Ken Griffey Jr. DH
Adam Dunn LF
Javier Valentin C
Brian Buchanan RF
Andy Abad 1B
Jeff Bannon SS
Norris Hopper CF
(Brandon Claussen P)

Lefty Cliff Lee is pitching for the Tribe.

Only question I have here: Why the crap is Menechino getting so much time at 2B. Even if some of the vets don't want to travel, you have THREE guys competing for the spot, have at least one of them play there. This just tells me that the spots pretty much already given to Womack, something I've known for a while but not wanted to admit.

This will be the second game with no Tony so either a deal is pending or there are ready to cut their losses. As for Freel and Aurillia, both played yesterday at Boston so they are probably getting the day off to get ready to head north.

I don't think 3 guys are competing for the 2b spot.

The Reds obviously don't like Freel as a 2b. I don't know why, but it HAS to be more than the fact that he is valuable as a super-utility guy, because the batting order is so much better with Freel in the line up. Yet Freel has gotten very little playing time at second. And if you assume Womack will not be with the Reds opening day (and I have assumed that since Krivsky took over), that leaves Aurilia as the starting second baseman and Menechino still competing for a roster spot.

I agree with you on Freel at 2B. I don't think he'll be used there unless the starter is given a day off, and God I hope you're right about Womack not making the team and Aurilia being the everyday second baseman. Those are words I never thought I'd type, BTW.

Who is Norris Hopper and how does a guy with a name that cool fly under the radar?

Originally drafted by the Braves. He played for Cherryville High School in Cleveland County NC. That high school and mine are in the same division for sports. The day before Todd and Norris both got drafted they played against each other in a Legion game. The scout that signed Todd was sitting with us when Norris came to bat. He said he was there to look at Norris also. After the AB, a 3 pitch strikeout, he was only there for Todd.

FWIW (and there isn't a whole lot for it) the Reds are 20-11 in GL action.

Couldn't we petition the MLB for games played in March to count for April or May?

It is really hard for me to believe that Womack is going anywhere.

I also heard that quote from Narron. But there is only one person in the Reds organization that I trust what they say. That is Bob Castellini. He has said things and followed them up with actions. Everyone else has said things that were complete lies. I would rather someone in the front office answer the question truthfully or if they are not allowed to answer the question (pending trade or signing) then answer with a "no comment" rather than say there is nothing happening on the trade front or what ever. More than anything else, including the O'Brien fireing, i like Castellini because he is a "straight-shooter" and you dont find those in baseball anymore.

And for his career year, Hopper got re-signed and sent back to the same level. He's not going to play in the major leagues without a lot of luck.

I would have said that same thing last year watching Jeff Bannon's error-friendly fielding and lack of plate discipline outweigh decent power, but he's hustled his head off in camp, hit well, and stolen a fistful of bases. He may have his Crash Davis-length time in the Show one of these years.

We had Jeremiah Piepkorn last year in Dayton. My two boys when ballistic everytime that guy got to the plate.

Too bad he's not much of prospect. Too bad you couldn't understand the sarcasm. ;)

You think the Reds losing for 4 years in a row is bad. Try following the Dragons and the pitch-to-contact-75-pitches-watch-the-first-pitch-go-by-lose-90-games-theory.

He's actually a lefty... that's the "Crafty Lefty" guy who had a handful of good outings against the Reds while he was a Florida Marlin a couple of seasons ago. The Reds have enough starting pitchers ticketed for AAA that they don't need the veteran.

That would be Gannon.

Bannon (http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/B/jeff-bannon.shtml), 27, was drafted by the Reds in the 18th round of the 2001 draft out of the UC Santa Barbara. He signed as a college senior, so he was 23 and playing at Billings that year. He didn't hit much in the Pioneer League in '01 or High-A in 2002, and repeated High-A at Potomac in 2003. A .295/.360/.443 line got him the bump to Chattanooga, where he hit .252/.316/.408 in 2004 and .252/.317/.449 (making the Southern League All-Star Team) in 2005. He was promoted to Louisville in July, hitting .282/.296/.443 in 41 games.

Jeff has pretty good power for an infielder, but a poor BB/K ratio. All this basestealing he's done in spring training is unusual, given that his career high in steals is 14. It certainly wouldn't be unheard of for him to take a big leap forward and make the major leagues, but he's not and has never really been a serious prospect.

Per Steve, Reds claimed LHP Jonathan Coutlangus (http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/C/jon-coutlangus.shtml) off waivers from San Francisco and optioned him to AA Chattanooga. To clear a spot on the 40-man, Grant Balfour was DLed.

Coutlangus is a converted outfielder drafted in the 19th round in 2003 out of the University of South Carolina. He hit well in his first pro season, but cratered in 2004 with a .194/.293/.242 line in 2004 at High-A Salem-Keizer. The Giants converted him to pitcher, and he rewarded them at High-A San Jose in 2005 with a 3.04 ERA and 4-0 record in 50 appearances, posting a nice 29/79 BB/K ratio in 77 innings and allowing just 64 hits.

He's 25 for 2006 and will be getting his first taste of AA. I wonder if Johnny Almaraz saw the success of Brian Shackleford (http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/S/brian-shackelford.shtml) and tried to go back to the well. Shack was 26, not 24, when he was converted at the AA level, and reached the big leagues in his third year of pitching. Coutlangus had better immediate success than Shack did, too, as Brian walked a ton of people when he was first changed over.

Hmm... San Jose seems to be a pitcher's park. I dunno. As far as I know, it's only High Desert (Milwaukee) and Lancaster (Arizona) that are the launching pads. BA (http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/features/040408parkfactors.html) has the league factor at 1160 for 2003, which would make it a hitter's league for sure. So maybe it's like Portland in the PCL- a pitcher's park in a hitter's league.

Rosales shows everyone that you don't need a lot of hair on your chest to be a man with an opposite field bloop double.

Cruz - swings through the 2-2 fastball. K. 3 outs. 7-3 Reds.

Pujols has hit 3 straight homeruns for the Cardinals today.

Then he's batting out of order. :p:

Bottom of the 8th:

Wagner in to pitch. Hollandsworth grounds out to a new 2B. 1 out.

Peralta (I think) singles to left.

Hafner grounds into a 4-3 double play, 3 outs. 7-3 Reds.

Dickerson gets to hit off Bob Wickman, and smashes one over Casey Blake's head in RF for a ground-rule double! Very impressive for the MVP of the 2005 Florida State League All-Star Game.

Steve said Chris can fly, which is totally unpossible without drugs. C'mon, Steve. Don't promote drugs to the youth of Reds Nation.

Ross follows with a double to chase Dickerson home. 8-3 Reds in the top of 9.

1B Jesse Gutierrez, set to play at AAA, gets to bat too.

Bannon draws a walk shortly after I rip on him for not doing it enough.

Hopper Texas Leagues a single (three hits, scoring Ross from 2B) to make it 9-3.

Bannon then scores on Gary Patchett's RBI single. 10-3.

Wickman must have McOvereaten before this one. A base hit to Gary Patchett, the Juan Castro of A-ball?

I'm not worried about Claussen's lame last two outings; after all, he faced the Indians twice, a pretty potent/patient offensive club. It happens.

FWIW, Tubby Hancock on to pitch for the Redbirds.

Wickman ought to feel real good getting lit up by minor leaguers from the worst system in the majors

And I think it might cost him his job, at least as far as the Reds are concerned.

Top of the 9th:

Wickman in to pitch to Dickerson, who promptly hits a ground rule double to RCF.

Ross - lines a double into the LF corner. Dickerson scores. Where's the crafty bunt or weak groundout to the right side?

Asadoorian - K's on 3 pitches, 1 out.

Gutierrez - Grounds out to 3B, 2 outs. Runner stays put at 2nd.

Bannon hangs his head in shame as he takes a walk.

Hopper singles into CF scoring a run, runners on 1st and 2nd.

Someone who is clearly not Felipe Lopez steps in and singles in another run. Pritchart, perhaps? Runners on 1st and 2nd.

Wickman coming out of the game. Bentancourt in to pitch. Rosales up Ks to end the inning.

10-3 Reds.

The Reds should pinch hit with Homer Bailey and let him practice his bunting.

Kent Mercker pitching the ninth for the Reds, and he walks Kelly Shoppach to lead off the inning. Eduardo Perez pinch-hits.

Did Clausen actually pitch that bad today.? It sounds like a bad hop cost him 2 runs in the 1st inning, and he only surrendered 1 more. It couldn't have been as bad as all that was it?

It couldn't have been as bad as all that was it?I didn't like the inning where he loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a hit batsman. Those are types of lapses that lead to big innings and turn a good outing into a loss.

Bottom of the 9th:

Kent Merker in to pitch and faces Shoppach who takes a walk.

Perez - Asadoorian makes a nice attempt on a foul ball in right, but he can't quite get to it. Perez shows his manly nature by poking an opposite field single. Runners on 1st and 2nd.

Vasquez - singles up the middle, a run scores, runners on 1st and 2nd. Rosales makes a nice attempt but can't quite get there.

Chris Delacruz in to hit. 4-6-3 double play, 2 outs. Runner on 3rd base.

Somebody (Sizemore?) flies out to CF. Had there been less than two outs, it would have been a sacrifice fly of epic proportions.

Reds win 10-4.

It seems to me the Reds are hitting a lot of pitchers this year on teams. Either our subs are great or the pitching out there is lame. I understand it's spring training, but even the past few days. We seem to crush the ball and add on to the points and the other teams don't seem to get much off our RP. Maybe a good sign. Reds have the 2nd best record in spring. Maybe our minors isn't dead last as some of the reports have said. I don't know. Just something I"ve noticed.

Makes you wonder why someone like Immonium AD or Pepto Bismol hasn't bought in game air time with so much talk about runs in a broadcast? Instead of "Don't Stink This Summer," they could go with something like "the Reds have scored two runs here in the inning, and while we're talking about runs, what do you do when you're sliding into home and your shorts are full of foam? Try grabbing your bottle of (Immonium AD/Pepto Bismol) and after a uniform change, you'll be back on the field in no time."
