It took Lopez a few years and he played horendous D and didnt hit well either and ironicly enough he was Edwin's age. Rollins would hold the record of most consecutive games with a hit though - so yeah, DiMaggio keeps his record either way.

Outside of the comments about Dunn, I'll settle with sub-par defense for an improved after today it seems bat. I totally agree.

Dunn's no Carl Crawford out there in the field, but I would think it would be apparent that today was a particularly bad defensive outing for the big fella. Mix that with Jr.'s zero range act in CF (he gave away two hits today), Womack not turning a ready-made triple play in the first, poor pitching, crazy wind patterns and more than a few screwy bounces and you get a 16-run drubbing.

Though today was an excellent reminder that the Reds front office had better start taking defense seriously. Denorfia to CF, Jr. to LF and Dunn to 1B along with Izturis at SS and Felipe at SS would make a huge difference. It's time to start putting people in the right places.

It's not very encouraging to see that it's taken one game for the Dunn witch hunt to begin. There is no denying that he had a terrible day in the field, but it was one game. It's easy to pile on the guy, but how many of you would want to be crucified over one of your lesser days? Right now, you could ship Dunn out for any pitcher in baseball and this team is not going to be a contender. There are holes all over this squad. Dunn's defense in LF is just a small part of the problem.

You see a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth because right now the calender says it's game 1, but it really might as well be game 501, because nothing has changed since last year, or the year before that, or the year before that.

And yes, KGJ is too slow to play CF. I counted at least two balls that he couldn't make plays on that would've been easy or makeable plays for a player like Chris Denorfia or Ryan Freel. He hasn't lost a step, he's lost several steps. That's not a knock on him, as he's still lethal with the stick, but it's time for him to move somewhere where he won't be detrimental to the team on defense.

I knew going in with the wind it was going to be a wild day, then the ump was screwing with both pitchers on the strike zone. I meant to write more. In the first inning, it was so clear and it went both ways. By the game's end, I figured he must be a bleeping Eskimo, although in the 9th he finally seemed to have put his eyeglasses on and was calling some pitches. Was that Angel Hernandez back there - he's the worst umpire in MLB! If it wasn't him, it must be his evil twin!

If you are talking about the one in the later innings of the game, it not only hurt your fantasy stats it was one of the daggers of the game. I think we were down 4 at that point and had 2 men on. A walk to Felipe and a dinger or even a single by Jr. would have tied it or cut it to 2.

Exactly, I thought that Felipe had the 'zone figured out, and he probably did too. He let really close pitches go by. He was not happy, judging by the reaction.

I'm not sure if anybody's mentioned this. If so I'm sorry but I didn't want to go back through 70 pages of thread. But after taping the game today and then watching it just now. I was real pissed as anyone would be. Maybe I was a little bit embarassed but maybe its a good thing! Call me an optimist but last year opening day was pretty amazing for the Reds. Beating up on Pedro, two Dunn homers, and a Randa walk off. As we all saw last year wasn't the best of year. Maybe this year with this sour taste on opening day means bigger and better things to come?

That strike zone was small, but it was for both. Arroyo to the rescue on Wed. We win that and this loss isn't that big o deal! NIGHT

Just got back. It was COLD!! I had fun though, even if the Reds lost. A bad day at the ballpark is better than a good day at work! I'm not too concerned, though--it was a weird kind of game, and I have confidence that the Reds will bounce back Wednesday behind Arroyo.

At this risk of drawing the wrath of the mods, I'll just say that I'm giving the OF's a pass on yesterdays performance. I think anyone would have had trouble making plays that were far from routine due to the wicked conditions and I'll leave it at that.

I'm of the opinion that if Rollins somehow manages to beat DiMaggio's streak over two seasons that he'll have performed the more difficult of the two feats.

DiMaggio got to ride a single groove. Rollins had to ride one, then take six months off, then pick it up again. That's incredibly difficult, particularly for a guy who's a notoriously slow starter.

Interesting perspectives and ones that I had not considered, esp re: Rollins slow start. Nonetheless, I remain of the opinion that the time off is more beneficial to the athlete if for no other reasons, it removes much of the pressure and limelight while allowing the player to recharge his batteries. And I would tend to agree with you more about the "single groove" notion if we were talking about a record a little more short term in nature. The fact that we're talking about something that lasted over two months speaks volumes to the sheer grit of the record holder. Perhaps I'm underestimating him, but I can't imagine Dimaggio was completely on his game every night for that long.
