Top 9, bases loaded, 1 out

Nefi Perez with an opportunity to add to the Cubs lead. With Rick White on the mound, I'd argue any RBIs he gets should be wiped out due to manager's indifference. Nefi bounces to Lopez, who makes the out at 2nd with the throw to 1st not being in time.

Another run scores. 14-7 cubs.

I think Dunn had an uncharacteristic game and will always support him. Don't get me wrong I don't think Edwin sucks I just don't think he's developed yet. It took Lopez a few years and he played horendous D and didnt hit well either and ironicly enough he was Edwin's age. It will take Edwin time right now his best bet is too split time with a vet like Aurilia and If this doesnt happen Weds or in the next five games I'll be shocked. Mark my words it will happen this club wants to win now. Not give young players time to develope that arent producing. Naron wont stand for it..

P.s. Edwin errored again on a routine play..

Top 9, men on, 1 out...

Mike Barrett at the plate hits a DEEP DRIVE -- look out, it's heading for Adam Dunn -- that hits just short of being a home run, hitting off the yellow line on the wall. More runs score, as it's a double by Barrett.

It's now 16-7. The seats themselves get up and start heading for the exits.

13-5 Cards, which is better than we've done, but they got bombed a lot earlier.

Rollins will bat in the top of the eighth, he's 0-3 with the streak on the line. Lance McAlister, a known moron, apparently thinks Rollins' streak is illegitimate because it brackets two seasons. Head asplodes again.

No, benching Encarnacion for Aurilia would be a perfectly Reds thing to do. The Reds are also on a nice run among the dumbest franchises in sports.

I'd just like to see the Reds assist a young player's career instead of retarding it they way they did with Kearns and Pena. And one surefire way to destroy a young player's confidence is to bench him based on small sample size. Period.

You are correct, sir - if he were to break DiMaggio's record DiMaggio would still be listed in the record books as holder of the longest streak in one year - which would still be the one to beat.

Rollins would hold the record of most consecutive games with a hit though - so yeah, DiMaggio keeps his record either way.

And it would be unbelievably impressive - its not Rollins fault when his streak occurred.

Probably from the same 30,000 that left the game early. I wonder why?

Dunn is a horrible left fielder and anyone saying it was the wind is a joke. I don't recall the left fielder for the Cubs screwing up on a fly ball. Plus, what about the one he didn't even play off the wall correctly? I could go on and on with him. He is too slow to play LF, period!

I'm of the opinion that if Rollins somehow manages to beat DiMaggio's streak over two seasons that he'll have performed the more difficult of the two feats.

DiMaggio got to ride a single groove. Rollins had to ride one, then take six months off, then pick it up again. That's incredibly difficult, particularly for a guy who's a notoriously slow starter.

What humor? I don't see no humor in a guy who can't play the outfield. He is horrible! Wake Up!

Oh this is too easy...

Angel Pagan's bases-loaded bloop to left was misplayed by Dunn, who got a late jump and missed the ball as he dove. That scored Michael Barrett with the go-ahead run. Relief pitcher Chris Hammond couldn't come up with Juan Pierre's grounder up the middle, scoring another run.

After Todd Walker's RBI single, Dunn misplayed Derrek Lee's drive to the wall and fell on the warning track as another run scored. Two more runs would score before the inning ended.

Tone it down. This is your first and only warning.

That's an interesting way of looking at it. I think I might agree with you.

Dunn's no Carl Crawford out there in the field, but I would think it would be apparent that today was a particularly bad defensive outing for the big fella. Mix that with Jr.'s zero range act in CF (he gave away two hits today), Womack not turning a ready-made triple play in the first, poor pitching, crazy wind patterns and more than a few screwy bounces and you get a 16-run drubbing.

Though today was an excellent reminder that the Reds front office had better start taking defense seriously. Denorfia to CF, Jr. to LF and Dunn to 1B along with Izturis at SS and Felipe at SS would make a huge difference. It's time to start putting people in the right places.

J/k

But he does need to work on that.. a few of them were just plan silly.

The HR was nice but when u drop 3 Balls allowing 5 runs to score somethings wrong.

Could be be cause he played at 1B most of ST? I dunno but it was definitly a game he'll be wanting to forget QUICKLY.

It's just one game lets put this one behind us.. learn from our mistakes.

It's not very encouraging to see that it's taken one game for the Dunn witch hunt to begin. There is no denying that he had a terrible day in the field, but it was one game. It's easy to pile on the guy, but how many of you would want to be crucified over one of your lesser days? Right now, you could ship Dunn out for any pitcher in baseball and this team is not going to be a contender. There are holes all over this squad. Dunn's defense in LF is just a small part of the problem.

Dunn has a skillet for a glove, but he hits homeruns and that's all that matters to most fans.He compiles an unusual amount of total bases and doesn't waste outs, something most baseball fans like to see from hitters.

He usually he passes in the field and often because of his shakiness more people test his arm and he can make them pay for it.

That said, now woud be a good time for anyone who hasn't done it in awhile to go out and shag some flies, better yet pick a windy day and do it.

I've done it and it's not as easy as I remember it being.

One loss. One of many. And the comments? Give me a break.

Womack sucks, but not so bad today, except he let a base hit get by him--bench him.

Hatteburg sucks, except when he hits a big homerun.

Griffey is too old and slow to play centerfield.

Reds pitching is horrible and Krivisky has not done enough in the three months he's been here (3 months?).

We are doomed and I ain't gonna watch no more.

Harang sucks.

It goes on and on. Is this the Reds board or the board of the damned.

I choose to not be down about anything, especially a baseball game that was seemingly being played in a vortex (or whatever you would call a swirling wind thingy).

It was Bizarro Baseball, and it was just one day.

Today was a microcosm of last year. Starting pitching that can't get out of it's own way -- relief pitching that can't get outs -- defense that blunders through the field, and an offense that produces enough runs for winning baseball. The Reds scored 6 or more runs and LOST a whopping 14 times last year. They're off to a flying start in that category this year.

You see a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth because right now the calender says it's game 1, but it really might as well be game 501, because nothing has changed since last year, or the year before that, or the year before that.

And yes, KGJ is too slow to play CF. I counted at least two balls that he couldn't make plays on that would've been easy or makeable plays for a player like Chris Denorfia or Ryan Freel. He hasn't lost a step, he's lost several steps. That's not a knock on him, as he's still lethal with the stick, but it's time for him to move somewhere where he won't be detrimental to the team on defense.

I watched some of the re-broadcast and came away thinking that the biggest problem Aaron Harang had today was the same one Zambrano had--a horrible strike zone by the home plate ump. I knew going in with the wind it was going to be a wild day, then the ump was screwing with both pitchers on the strike zone. Harang made some daggone good pitches on the corners that would have got him out of trouble two different times, and blue decided he wanted noticed.

If you are talking about the one in the later innings of the game, it not only hurt your fantasy stats it was one of the daggers of the game. I think we were down 4 at that point and had 2 men on. A walk to Felipe and a dinger or even a single by Jr. would have tied it or cut it to 2.

I was real pissed as anyone would be. Maybe I was a little bit embarassed but maybe its a good thing! Call me an optimist but last year opening day was pretty amazing for the Reds. Beating up on Pedro, two Dunn homers, and a Randa walk off. As we all saw last year wasn't the best of year. Maybe this year with this sour taste on opening day means bigger and better things to come?

I'm of the opinion that if Rollins somehow manages to beat DiMaggio's streak over two seasons that he'll have performed the more difficult of the two feats.

DiMaggio got to ride a single groove. Rollins had to ride one, then take six months off, then pick it up again. That's incredibly difficult, particularly for a guy who's a notoriously slow starter.

Interesting perspectives and ones that I had not considered, esp re: Rollins slow start. Nonetheless, I remain of the opinion that the time off is more beneficial to the athlete if for no other reasons, it removes much of the pressure and limelight while allowing the player to recharge his batteries. And I would tend to agree with you more about the "single groove" notion if we were talking about a record a little more short term in nature. The fact that we're talking about something that lasted over two months speaks volumes to the sheer grit of the record holder. Perhaps I'm underestimating him, but I can't imagine Dimaggio was completely on his game every night for that long.
