Having Aurila platoon with hattenberg make sit more likely that firstbase may not be a blackhole as much as we thought.

THey should combine for an .800 OPS+ as long as they don't face alot of opposite pitchers.

Nice scouting work. That's a small sample size on the lefties and probably reflects facts like the Reds still keep the likes of lefties like Griffey and Dunn in the lineup against most lefties. I'd platoon out Womack and Hatteberg against all lefties, as well.

Also, that's only one side of the equation. Neither Womack nor hattenberg are particularly good against LH pitchers. The fact that this lefty wasn't that great against LH hitters last seaon doen't mean that Hattenberg will suddenly figure it out. The more likely scenario is that those LH hitters which don't have problems against LH pitching will do even better.

This should be an interesting game. The Reds have had problems with soft-tossing lefting for just about forever. Meanwhile, if Arroyo can keep Pierre and Walker off the bases, the rest of the lineup is awfully right-handed. It should be a good matchup for Bronson.

3 year splits versus lefties:

Dunn (487 AB): .220/.339/.462
Aurilia (373 AB): .268/.340/.458

and for good measure..

Griffey (336 AB) .247/.337/.494

I'm now slightly less mad than I was 30 seconds ago. That said, Encarnacion hit .246/.338/.477 in 65 AB last year. I could complain, but given the real effect (or essential lack thereof) of batting order and the balance in performance, I'll give narron a pass.

M2
04-05-2006, 11:50 AM
As far as matching up against Rusch goes, I don't think Dunn 4th or 5th makes much difference. The downside of hitting Dunn 5th is that later in the game when the Cubs come back with a RH reliever (and they will), he's not in place to do maximum damage.

Red Leader
04-05-2006, 11:53 AM

He doesn't hit as well from the right side, or at least as good as Ross, apparently.

In all seriousness, most managers try to work their subs in more in the first couple weeks than later in the season. I don't have a problem with Aurilia, Freel and Ross playing vs a LHP, or even playing in general, and I don't have a problem with Aurilia batting 4th. It's not like it kills the Reds and now they have no shot at winning, but I was sincerely hoping that Dunn would bat no lower than 4th this year. I'd actually like to see Dunn bat 3rd, and Griffey cleanup with Encarncaion 2nd, but that probably won't happen either.

You have to think Reds are hitting Kearns lower in lineup for a reason. They must think it will help jump start his bat if he stays out of the pressure hitting slots. Some guys overswing if they are hitting fourth or fifth.

Otherwise, he would be the logical cleanup hitter in this lineup, "breaking up" Griffey and Dunn.

What I want to see: Arroyo not get frustrated like Harang and throw a meatball if he doesn't get the call he likes. I don't normally espouse it, but I actually don't mind walking a Cub or two in this lineup because someone is going to swing away at a pitcher's pitch and ground into a DP. Me either, but if OBP and SLG are both equal and fixed, I'll take the guy with the significantly higher batting average. The real point however is that the order of those two is virtually irrelevent b/c neither has proven himself clearly superior. To me, the only real argument is to bat Dunn higher because in the event a righty comes in to relieve, he IS clearly the better batter in that circumstance.

Nah, that's over before you know it. Plus, you probably stroked the ball pretty well.

With a pop, you have to live with the inevitability of you being out and how useless your AB was before the out is recorded. It gives you time (too much time in fact) to reflect on the situation and feel sick to your stomach about it.

Dayton? Heck, I'm on the edge of Iowa and can't get the game. Must be Cubs territory down here.

MLB blackout rules blow chunks. Last year I had mlb.tv and ended up in Nashville on a business trip. Freakin' Reds/Mets game (in Shea) was blacked out because Nashville appears to be Reds territory.
