PIT Ian Snell, RHP (0-0, -.--)
Pirates (0-2)
CIN Brandon Claussen, LHP (0-0, -.--)
Reds (1-1)

Scouting Report:
Snell (1-2, 5.14 ERA in 2005) posted a 58-20 record in the Minor Leagues and will look to make the most of his first opportunity to start regularly in the big leagues. Last season was Claussen's (10-11, 4.21 ERA in 2005) first full year in the Cincinnati rotation. He established career highs in every statisical category and was the staff's second-most consistent starter behind Aaron Harang. The lefty was 2-0 with a 1.74 ERA in three games against the Pirates in 2005.

I'm hoping for a Reds win against the Pirates.

Nice that Casey is coming back to Cincinnati, but in all honesty, I could care less. Players change teams all the time. He's a great guy off the field, but I won't miss him on the field. We need to move on to a different model at 1B, and hopefully, sometime down the road, we will.

Hopefully they get this game in here is tonight's National Weather Service forecast:

Tonight: Periods of showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly before 11pm, then showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly between 1am and 2am. Low around 54. South wind between 8 and 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

I'm watching the weather closely. I'm leaving here about 3:30 and I really want to see Casey's return.

It looks like it's for sure going to pour rain, but from the look of the radar, it might clear out and be gone by gametime.

I hope so anyway.

I know Snell is highly regarded, but his stuff seemed very mediocre in the start I saw against the Reds in ST. He does have some nice offspeed stuff, but it just seems like he doesn't enough fastball to make the slow stuff effective on big league hitters. Anyone else have an opinion on Snell?

Almost any time the Reds are working the pitcher and getting walks the offense will have a good night. THay have too much hitting ability to be continually getting free passes and not make someone pay.

It's brutally effective. Not only does it grind down the starting pitcher, but you get to see all those 6th and 7th relievers who really shouldn't be pitching in the majors in the first place.

The 1998 Yankees were the best I've ever seen at doing it and, not coincidentally, the Reds have the same hitting coach. The tough part of it is having the confidence to stick with it. It's counterintuitive to what you're taught as a kid and it's easy to get nervous or anxious and expand your strikezone early in the count.

Doesn't look that bad. It all depends upon the direction it's moving. Right now, it looks like Cincy's going to get hit with the green part, which is the weakest part of the front.

And the yellow part appears headed directly at Columbus. I'm going to the Clippers Opening Day game tonight and I have a feeling I may need a boat to get back afterwards. Can't argue with free tickets though so I will take the rain poncho and try to stay dry.

I was also thinking of trying to make it out to the Reds game tomorrow night but if the forcast looks bad I might take a pass.

Even if they do get the game in, I'd imagine there will be rain delays, playing in the rain, dodging raindrops, in and out of shelter to stay dry, etc. etc. Reds management is usually hellbent on getting the game in.

According to the Weather Channel's hour by hour forecast there is between a 50 and 60 % chance of rain/thunderstorms every hour tonight. So they may get this game in but it will probably be delayed at some point. It just depends on whether you want to sit through possible delays tonight.

Nice that Casey is coming back to Cincinnati, but in all honesty, I could care less. Players change teams all the time. He's a great guy off the field, but I won't miss him on the field. We need to move on to a different model at 1B, and hopefully, sometime down the road, we will.

Aw come on, Red, that was kind of mean.

Case was here for 8 years and was extremely popular. I don't think saying "welcome home" is not moving on; it's just being nice to a deserving guy who still loves Cincinnati. It has nothing to do with how well (or not) he played lB.

I have no problems at all with people loving Sean Casey. He is a very, very great guy. I wish there were hundreds more like him in MLB. I just don't think there's a reason for people to beat themselves up over him being gone, like there's no way the Reds will ever win again without him in the field, or in the clubhouse. There are some people that think that way, and it bothers me. Sean Casey was not the savior of the Reds on the field. That's all I'm saying. Not meant to disrespect Casey at all.

I've lived in Cincinnati for almost 13 years and this is the WORST and COLDEST spring I can remember. During March, and so far in April, I don't think the average temps have been reached even once.

The trees have no leaves yet, few flowers are blooming, and shrubs are just beginning to leave... usually the trees are out and flowers are abundant by now.

I hate it!

No, at least not here. The trees usually begin to get their leaves in March as do the flowers begin to bloom. March norms are mid to high 50's. We didn't even come close to that this year. All flora is way behind the norm.

The norms in April are mid to high 60's, with the occasional 70's.... nada so far.

Our spring this year has been more like I remember in upstate NY... which is a lot further north than we are. Believe it or not, Cincinnati is almost identical (latitude) to Washington, DC, the major difference being that we are inland.

Well, it drizzled most of the afternoon, but it's more of a light rain now, and the radar doesn't look real good. This is one of those things where everyone involved would prefer they just call it now if they're going to call it, and not spend all night sitting here.

Haven't heard anything official, but my guess is that if tonight is rained out, there may be a split doubleheader Saturday. We shall see.

I've barely seen spring since I left the mid-Atlantic in 1981.

When I was in West Lafayette, we had spring about the same time as Cincinnati, maybe a week or two difference, but man moving up two hrs or so to the north made a huge difference. We don't get spring really untill late Apirl/May it seems up here. Same state, and what seems like a month's difference between springs.

If the game is rained out and made up on Saturday, does a new game thread get created or will this carry over? If a new one is made, can we trade this thread to SOSH for a game thread to be named as we would then have an excess of game threads? Would this thread be designated for assignment only to be released and signed by a Twins site? Royals?

Or are we going to have to restructure it's contract and work options into the new deal? :D

Technically, this thread is on a minor league deal until it gets enough rep points to be called up to ORG.

Ok I said it and it happened. On opening day I told many of you naysayers Aurilia would be splitting time with Encarnacion by game 5 it took 3. In game two Encarnacion didnt do much better which is why you see Aurilia who in the first two games has put up the best numbers offensively for the reds. Don't get me wrong I dont think Encarnacion is a hack, but he still needs time to develope and his bat isnt helping us win right now. I clearly rember about 15 of you bashing me saying this would never happen and also you gave my rep numbers low points. I guess you guys just don't like someone that knows baseball. To all you naysayers for future posts, "don't act like you know everything you don't!" If you did you'd be a part of the Reds staff. A fielding percentage of .978 last season at 3B is painful? IN 18 Games there lol

At 2B it was .981 in 68 Games
SS .975 in 30 games.

compared to edwin
last year .944 feilding % in 56 games

1.00 in the field this year.

All im saying is Aurila will do nothing but HELP us when he's in the lineup. More protection for our other big hitters. And lets not forget he's helped us get runs in this season... not many can say that yet.

He produces when he plays thats what matters. Aurila Bashing with no base of facts is kinda getting old. He's doin no worse or no better then any other player right now.

Consider the fact he was a SS until his injury last season.. now he's primaraly 3B 2B and some 1B He's out of his eliment right now too.. Cut the dude some slack and wish him the best today in a game we can win.

Build yes..........but you gotta do something to impress your stars to staying with you long enough to BUILD that team.

I'm still just frustrated that I cannot watch Reds games.

FSN Ohio got cancelled off the cable because they just assume everyone in Toledo follows the Indians.

MLB.tv still considers me "blacked out"

It's absolutely and utterly ridiculous. So much for living in the 21st century when you have these arcane blackout rules that make less than zero sense.

What are you talking about? He isnt doing anything? 2 games. I dont know what you want from him. Sorry I could have told you before the season he wouldnt have started 8 for 8 with 9 homeruns. Alright games on we can carry this on elsewhere.

Dont get me wrong the odds of the reds making the playoffs are slim to none but does that mean we keep starting a young player who isnt hitting and playing D very well? Come on. Lets give up trying to win games to give these young players starting time, yeah right. Lord knows with the reds pitching any extra bat helps and If someone is not htting they need to sit. Unless they've been proven on this team..

you don't make those kind of decisions after two games. it's not like he tanked this spring too.

re: any Encarnacion-Larson comments. Larson was 25 when he made his debut, Encaranacion was 22. Encarnacion had more ABs before turning 23 than Larson did before he turned 28. He's got a little bit of time before we can even begin to talk like that.

Well the Braves did get hurt last year and they STILL WON THE DIVISION.
Also I'm sure Dunn and Griffey know they have a better chance of getting a ring in the next couple years with Edwin playing then with Rich Playing now. Edwin will not get better on the bench. OK I promise I'm done now game thread. Casey flew out see. Game thread.

I said this when I saw Claussen in Spring Training. He doesn't seem to lose his composure when he gets runners on and very few outs on the board. While it's impossible to not give up any runs in these situations, they seem to bring the best out in him. Of course, they also give the fans a heart attack, but we'll have to live with it.

Man..... glad to see that the fans are behind the TEAM.

With the runs we put up, it wont take much of an improvment from our Pitchers to get us many more wins than we got last season.
