Even though they both are batting 1.000 so far, Arroyo has a lead in SLG with 4.000 and OPS with 5.000.

nope. WMP doesn't pitch. although I suppose we could count balls that bounce off his head over that short wall in RF in fenway.

Sure Arroyo hits home runs AND pitches.

But can he catch? Because you can never have enough catching.

And can he play 2nd base?

What is Bronson slugging after that second homer?

Never mind, i looked it up: He's slugging a phat 2.00
Pena checks in slugging .667
1 double and a RBI in 3 plate appearences for wily mo.
Bronson is winning in the RBI category as well!

Compare strike outs: Bronson: 1 in 6 plate appearances Wily Mo: 2 in 3 plate appearences

Walks: Bronson: 1, Wily Mo: 0

On Wily Mo's little gaffe:
From the Bo Sox wrap -
Once again, the offense produced some timely hits and the defense -- save for Wily Mo Pena accidentally deflecting a Frank Catalanotto flyball into the bullpen for a home run -- made all the plays.

From the Jay's wrap-

Frank Catalanotto followed with a two-run homer to right field that bounced off outfielder Wily Mo Pena's glove and into the Jays' bullpen.

AP-

Frank Catalanotto hit a two-run homer in the eighth, a long drive that went off substitute outfielder Wily Mo Pena's glove and into the Toronto bullpen.

Hey, he did us Red Sox fans a favor. If not for that HR, we wouldn't have gotten Papelbon in the 9th. And a home opener without Papelbon is like a day without sunshine, or something like that.

So who holds the Record for HR's hit by a pitcher ?

As a pitcher, meaning being at the plate while listed in the game as a pitcher, I believe the record is Wes Ferrell with 37 home runs as a pitcher. In 1931, Ferrell only gave up nine home runs ... and he also hit nine home runs himself, which is the single season leader for a pitcher. Warren Spahn is second all-time with 35 career home runs as a pitcher.

I believe Babe Ruth hit 686 home runs as an outfielder while only hitting 15 home runs as an actual pitcher in a game.

Thanks to the DH and how pitchers are used now, thats a record that will be around a lot longer.

Joe Nuxhall held this record for a while. One would assume Gullett - but I think his two home runs came in the postseason.

I will check this out.

EDIT - after an unofficial scan of scan of baseball reference.com - Nuxie had 13 HR's in his Reds career.

Nope, Bronson is only the second MLB pitcher to hit homers in their first 2 starts. Door prize to whoever finds out who the other guy is.

Elias Says ...By Elias Sports Bureau, Inc.

A daily glance inside the numbers from the world of sports:

MLB
• Bronson Arroyo homered in his only at-bat in his Reds debut last week, and he did it again in his first at-bat in the Reds' 9-2 win over the Cubs on Tuesday. Arroyo is the first pitcher in the live-ball era to hit home runs on each of his first two at-bats in a season.
Arroyo is also the first pitcher in major-league history to hit a home run and earn a victory in each of his first two starts of a season. The only other pitcher even to hit homers in his first two starts was Sean Bergman of the Astros in 1999.
• The Yankees set an American League record by posting their ninth consecutive win in a home opener. They defeated the Royals 9-7. The only previous AL team to win home openers in eight consecutive seasons was the Yankees from 1920-27, spanning their last three seasons at the Polo Grounds and their first five at Yankee Stadium. The major league record is 10 by the Pirates from 1945-54.

Last night highlights from ESPN sports center showed a klutzy Wily Mo backed up against the right field wall in Fenway dropping a ball. It was a sweet view, especially remembering the ineptitude of the ball Pena dropped into the stands last year during our series in Boston.

Why is everyone hating on Wily Mo? He got us a decent pitcher which we needed but he is still not getting regular playing time, which he needs. He is young and hasn't played a full season in the MLB. His defense in the OF is no worse than Adam Dunn's (who has played 2 full seasons in the OF, plus more minor league time). However, not saying Pena > Dunn.

I don't think any of us are hating on Wily Mo. Its just the fact that Bronson has pitched two great games and has hit more homeruns than WMP. Who would have expected that. I hope Wily Mo becomes a great player, but the fact is that he may never become what people say he will. By the way, His offense is definately worse than Dunn's IMO. Take away his defense on opening day, he hasn't been too bad. Not great by any means, but not too bad. I remember going to games and watching WMP play the OF. It was about like watching a train wreck. I was at the game that he ran into the wall. He made the catch, but he sure isn't a gracefull fellow. Not saying he can't improve, and with a few ballet lessons, maybe he will look better out there, but his defense right now just isn't ML caliber. Probably not even AA caliber. Sure he is a victim of his own contract, but as the saying goes, there is no such thing as a can't miss prospect. In my eyes, WMP is just a prospect playing at the Major League level. But hey, I'll give Wily Mo props for the hours of laughter his antics have caused. Heres to you WMP:beerme:

In an ESPN chat today Jerry Crasnick was asked the following:

jim (nj): what is the deal with Willy Mo Pena is it possible to send him down to work out the fundementals like plate disipline and defensive skills , or does Pena have to agree with it?

Jerry Crasnick: Jim,

What you see is what you get with Wily Mo. Great batting practices. Towering home runs. Lots of strikeouts, adventurous defense and a bunch of disabled list visits. I don't know if that's ever going to change. He's got enormous upside, but I have my doubts that he'll ever put it together to become an All-Star caliber player.

But...but..but..WMP is going to be the next Sammy Sosa....
