Harang was roughed up for nine runs (six earned) and nine hits over five innings in Monday's 16-7 Opening Day loss to the Cubs. On a blustery day, the right-hander quickly fell into a 5-0 first inning hole but temporarily recovered. He retired 10 of 11 batters at one point but couldn't get an out in a sixth inning, when Chicago added seven runs. Lifetime vs. Pittsburgh, Harang is 5-2 with a 4.27 ERA -- including 1-1 with a 3.46 ERA in two games last season.

Perez looked much like the staff ace of 2004 during his Opening Day start against the Brewers. The southpaw held Milwaukee to one run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings by skillfully mixing in his splitter and slider with a fastball that topped out at 92 mph. He had nine strikeouts in the outing, including seven strikeouts among the final 10 batters he faced. Perez went 1-0 in four starts against the Reds in 2005, but allowed 20 hits, 12 earned runs and 16 walks in 16 1/3 innings.

Good Lord! What is up with that? Is splitting lefties and righties more important than having your best power hitter in the #4 slot?

Just makes me shake my head and my heart palpitate. In other words, I'm angry!

And why isn't Hatteburg playing? Here we go again with Aurilia getting a ton of playing time.

Actually, I think I read somewhere that if you're going for optimum lineup construction, you're two best hitters should be 3rd and 5th.
Not sure why, I'll see if I can dig that up.

That's because generally they're up with men on, and needing to keep rallies going. Your 4 spot should be your best power guy, but can afford to K alot because of you able 3 and 5 spots to make up for it... not sure how Aurilia fits that bill over Dunn.

In the late innings yes sometimes it matters.

Seriously, is every lineup going to be a shout out every day?

If you have nine hitters and nine batting order slots to put them in there are 362,880 ways to do it, and only one of them is right

Well I found an interesting tool on baseballmusings.com for optimum lineup projections. I put in all the players career average OPS and SLG, and it came up with the following lineups. All of which would get Jerry Narron fired yesterday, then tarred, feathered, and tied to a giant rock before being thrown into the Ohio River.
1.Adam Dunn
2.Ken Griffey Jr.
3.Felipe Lopez
4.Rich Aurillia
5.Austin Kearns
6.Edwin Encarnacion
7.Javier Valentin
8.Aaron Harang
9.Ryan Freel
That was the top run producing one, expected to average 4.737 Runs per game.

One flaw in my system, beyond the obvious Harang batting 8th, is using career averages. These pump up guys like Aurillia and Valentin, and lower the usefulness of Lopez and Encarnacion.
Maybe someone who has the Pecota numbers would be able to show what would work best.

Just a guess, but I think RA is one of the least likely to be traded. Despite bad play yesterday, RA is reasonably good at all the infield positions. Womack and Freel are basically second basemen, although Freel does play the outfield. I think his versatility makes RA a keeper this year as a utility infielder.

As for the cleanup spot, I think it is based on RA's good hitting with men on base in 2005. Kearns would be the obvious choice but Reds seem determined to hit him lower in order at this stage.

I do agree with splitting Griff and Dunn against lefties.

columbusbrian

I think that watching Perez today is going to be a good indication of whether or not the trend of Reds working counts and being patient is an actual philosophy on the part of the team. Last night, Maholm didn't have his control early and the reds really made him pay. It will be interesting to see how they handle a pitcher who has his stuff working. The Pirates bullpen probably isn't that much better than the reds and judging by the way they have been approaching ABs, it pretty clear that Perez is going to have to throw a lot of strikes and have his sinker and slider working. None of the starters they have faced have been solid so far. It looks pretty obvious that from the other side, Pittsburg is going to want to get Harang out as early as possibly, regardless of how many runs he actually gives up.

I agree that RA has some value, but he is nowhere in the future plans of this team and would be valued as a "missing piece' of a potential contender like Minny. Losing Aurilia and adding bullpen help would be of greater value than keeping him and sending Hammond and White to the mound with the game on the line.

Edwin sits

Edwin Encarnacion, 1 for 8 in his first two games, was not in Thursday's lineup, his place taken by Rich Aurilia.

"Eddie is going to play and he wasn't in the lineup because he is 1 for 8," said manager Jerry Narron.

Actually, I think I read somewhere that if you're going for optimum lineup construction, you're two best hitters should be 3rd and 5th.
Not sure why, I'll see if I can dig that up.

For those interested here is one take on lineups:
http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/five-questions-cincinnati-reds-2006/

Dave Studeman recently used The Book in his Constructing Lineups article to argue against Cyril Morong's recent research and Dan Scotto's review of Morong's findings on lineup construction.

Here's what The Book says:
Your three best hitters should bat somewhere in the #1, #2 and #4 slots. Your fourth- and fifth-best hitters should occupy the #3 and #5 slots. The #1 and #2 slots will have players with more walks than those in the #4 and #5 slots. From slot #6 through #9, put the players in descending order of quality.

resulting in:
1. Freel, LF
2. Dunn, 1B
3. Kearns, RF
4. Griffey Jr., CF
5. Lopez, SS
6. Encarnacion, 3B
7. LaRue, C
8. Aurilia, 2B
9. Starting Pitcher

not saying I agree, just that its interesting...

He sat because he was 1 for 8, a direct quote from the manager.

Oddly enough, another story had this quote from Mr. Narron,
http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060406&content_id=1387428&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
"If he was 8-for-8, he probably wouldn't be out there," Narron said. "It just gives him a day. I want to get guys into games as best I can."

So take your pick.
Still its game 5, if you keep getting bent out of shape every game about the lineup, it's going to wear you out by the end of the season.

NARRON DID NOT PULL EE BECAUSE HE WAS 1-8! this is and article on cincinnatis mlb page

CINCINNATI -- Following a blazing hot Spring Training, third baseman Edwin Encarnacion found himself off to a 1-for-8 start and out of Thursday's starting lineup against the Pirates.

But Reds manager Jerry Narron said the rest wasn't because Encarnacion was batting .125 in eight at-bats.

"If he was 8-for-8, he probably wouldn't be out there," Narron said. "It just gives him a day. I want to get guys into games as best I can."

I think the other quote is a mis-quote/mis-spoke type thing. I think he was trying to say that 1-8 wasn't why he was out of the lineup. In fact I think there was another sentence after that. Narron saying something about the upcoming 3 straight lefties.

Edwin sits

Edwin Encarnacion, 1 for 8 in his first two games, was not in Thursday's lineup, his place taken by Rich Aurilia.

"Eddie is going to play and he wasn't in the lineup because he is 1 for 8," said manager Jerry Narron.
That says something different.

Who closes if the situation arrives today...

Pitch whoever gives you the best matchup.

Could be Mercker, could be Weathers (doubtful--I think they want to give him the day off), could be Coffey or Belisle.

Freel needs to be in the lineup as much as humanly possible.

He creates things.

I was a little concerned for Ryan Freel there. Dunn looked like he was going to happily spear him in the dugout.

Great job by Freel though.

64 pitches for Perez through 3.

They are making him work. I think that Aurilia AB (for a BB) took about 9-10 pitches.
