Marty was very complementary of the the young Reds 3b after a nice play on the field and taking advantage of a Wrigley Field gale.

BTW - re: Chris Hammond - we are looking at a slow starter IIRC. Chris, however would probably just walk in to Narron's office and quit if it gets worse.

Good game for Arroyo. Especially considering how the wind was blowing.

10 groundball outs, 7 flyball outs, 4 Ks. On a day where the wind was blowing out 17-25 mph straight to CF, that is an unbelievably professional job of pitching from Arroyo.

I was one of the Wily Mo contingent of fans herein, but am certainly willing to admit that Arroyo, at this point, has certainly shown himself to be more than fair value for Pena's potential. Good for Krivsky for getting that deal done.

Ok, a few more lucid observations, for what they're worth...

1. Arroyo looked truly amazing. I was in the bleacher facing home plate, so I couldn't quite see the location of all of his pitches, but he was just spot-on, quick, solid, confident, good velocity at times like he could be an ace for almost any team in baseball. The kid has got good stuff, and he's smart too, which is one reason I've always had good faith in him. The Cubs were bad, no question about it, but Arroyo was downright freaking good. I hope to God he can keep this up. He's at an age where I feel like he could really come into his own in Cincinnati, more so than he would have been given opportunity to do in Boston.

2. I don't think I've ever seen a home run like Dunner's first. It was hit so hard that it cleared out almost before we had a chance to see it. Sometimes I don't think that kid can be a real human being. I kept moping around that the Reds can't hit homers with anyone on base, not particularly endearing myself to the Cubs fans around me. Oh, and then Encarnacion hit one with three men on base. So that was nice.

3. The bleacher bums are truly awful. Obviously, I expect to get razzed a bit when I'm clearly a visitor in another team's home. But there is a difference between some good-natured teasing and drunken, uneducated, ignorant horribleness. They might as well call that place Testosterone Zone. There is a difference between shouting "Go back to Cincinnati" and screaming "Kearns has the clap, he got it from his dad" (later augmented to "Kearns has the clap, he gave it to his mom") ad naseum throughout the entire game. And the thing is, Kearns (for example) could blow up at these people at any time, and I wouldn't blame him in a way, but who would get in trouble for it, the people provoking him for nine innings straight or his two seconds of reaction? And these people don't even know what they're talking about, and they're so busy hating that that can't bother loving. They were so preoccupied with screaming at Kearns that they completely missed Michael Barrett's home run (serves them right). But those Reds are more genial than I am about it: best non-baseball moment of the whole game was during a cubs pitching change, when Dunn, Griffey and Kearns stood in a group and faced the bleachers, with everyone standing, screaming and taunting them, and they just stood there staring them down and smiling. It was so delightful that some of the Testerone Zone was temporarily struck with a rare brief moment of humanity and laughed back at them. Of course, I did not take a picture, because anything there's worth taking a picture of, I'm so caught up in it that I forget. This is why I have a gazillion pictures of the groundscrew and about two of the actual game.

You can't fault people for loving their team, but they are uniquely awful about it. The ballpark in which I've spent the most time is Yankee Stadium, and they are nothing like this. First of all, they know what they're talking about. Very few of the loudest in the bleachers seemed to have any clue what's going on with the Reds ("where is Wily Mo Pena?" "Have the Reds won even a game yet?"). And second of all, while Yankeeites are not immune to personal attacks, particularly when people from Jersey are involved, they mostly stick to baseball. The worst of all in the bleachers was wearing an Ernie Banks jersey, and had I been in the mood for it (and had I not been suddenly concerned that I was having a brain aneurysm because I started mixing up left and right fields), I would have asked him how he feels about representing Ernie Banks with that attitude. You wear that, man, you have a name and a team to uphold. Cubs fans are just nasty when they're losing. That sense of entitlement is very irritating, and they have no sense of humor about it at all.

I should note that this is the first time I have ever sat in the bleachers, and my previous experiences at Wrigley (one of which involved a similar walloping of the Cubs by our beloved Reds) have all been delightful. It's a very small portion of people, but boy do they give their fans a bad name.

I did receive one very creative catcall: "Mm-mmm, five-way chili" which I thoroughly enjoyed. Almost fell over from the fact that someone was being creative.

And really, nothing could have spoiled that game for me. Nothing. And I did have to refrain from telling all of you I love you, love the Reds, etc. over and over again by the time I posted last night. I can't even describe how unbelievably great it was to be back in a ballpark again, watching a team that I always truly forget how much I love until I see them in person, despite their many weaknesses. Dang, six months go by and you always think you remember what it's like, you're always looking forward to it, but then it comes around again and you're giddy all over again. It's like the first snowfall of the year. Snow is just a part of life and you never think much of it. But then it snows for the first time in the winter, and you think dang it's like a miracle! How does this happen every single year?!?

Anyway, it was rad.

The Reds are playing in a very weak division this year. If they keep this up and make some moves at the deadline, I seriously think they can contend for the wild card. Okay, fourth place.

I'm actually trying to get some work done today but I'm looking forward to checking in later and reading some other opinions on the game. Go Reds!

Of course, that all goes out the winder when EE airmails a throw to first for the first time this year.

He did on Sunday but I have to admit Marty was restrained even after the HR.
