I am wondering how much we can read into the fact the Phillips is playing 2nd and Aurilia SS. It says to me that they the interest in finding out if Phillips is a potential long term solution at 2B rather than a utility type.

I actually feel pretty good about the game today. With Harang on the hill, if the offense can scratch across three runs it should be a good day.

Tony Womack can't buy his way into the lineup right now and he can't be happy about it.

Does Phillips have enough range to cover the gaping holes on each side of him? He's going to need to cover a LOT of ground today.

I was all for giving Dunn the day off today, as he is 0-for-7 vs Willis - but I can see why Narron wouldn't want to sit both Lopez and Dunn on the same day.

I'd switch Phillips and Aurilia's positions.
I originally thought that's what they'd do, but now that I think about it, it's probably smart leaving Phillips at second. If they have any thoughts at all of him taking over the job long term, they need to put him there and leave him there.

I'd switch Phillips and Aurilia's positions.

Makes sense.

Phillips plays both positions real well.

Aurilia plays a very bad SS, but is actually a passable 2ndbaseman.

With Dunn there is always the chance he gets hold of one and today it would likely be a game channging event.

Yup, and Narron pays a great lip service to defense, but it doesn't ever translate to what he puts on his lineup cards.

And the Reds envisioned Pokey Reese as their second basemen of the future and he basically learned on the job in the ML's - yet when Larkin needed a breather it was still Reese who slid over for the day, so the Phillips needs to stay at second is a fallacy. One game isn't gonna stunt his develoment, nor will it hinder the Reds from assessing him long term as a second base answer. If anything it allows the Reds to see him at SS so if Lopez goes down with an injury they have options.

A lineup with Rich batting 3rd Austin 5th and Edwin 7th is not a good lineup. Narron should at least swich the 3 and 5 spots. I don't know everybody's numbers against Willis though. None of them can be good.

CE Presents Guide to RedsZone Game Threads

SECTION 2: PRE-GAME STARTING LINEUP COMPLAINTS

Prior to the start of a game, the game thread space will be dedicated to complaints about the starting lineup that has been put on the field. It has been statistically proven that lineups generate the greatest number complaints of any non-play incident in the game thread (using the "Complaints Created" stats).

The following situations tend to generate the most complaints:
- Ryan Freel not batting leadoff
- Ryan Freel not playing
- Felipe Lopez not playing
- Felipe Lopez playing, but against lefthanded pitchers
- Rich Aurillia starting in place of Felipe Lopez
- Rich Aurillia starting in place of Ryan Freel
- Rich Aurillia starting in pllace of Edwin Encarnacion
- Rich Aurillia existing
- Rich Aurillia batting too high
- Rich Aurillia batting too low
- Adam Dunn batting too low in the batting order
- Adam Dunn leading off (see: Boone, Bob)
- Adam Dunn without sufficent protection in the lineup
- Austin Kearns being buried in the lineup
- Austin Kearns being sent to Louisville before the game thread starts
- Edwin Encarnacion getting a day off
- Edwin Encarnacion getting the night off
- Edwin Encarnacion being seen at the bus terminal with a ticket to Louisville
- Tony Womack being mentioned in the starting lineup
- Errors contributing to benching for players you like
- Errors not contributing to benching for players you don't like
- "Getaway Day" lineups featuring scraps and scrubs
- Breaking up the lefties
- Breaking up the righties
- Breaking up the band
- Tinkering with a lineup that worked
- Refusing to change a lineup that doesn't
- Using small statistics to justify change
- Refusing to look at big statistics that do justify a change
- Starting Eric Milton as the pitcher

Please phrase your complaints in the form of a disgusted exclamation and insert as many of the following words as possible: scrappy, crappy, idiotic, moronic, lack of detail to the little thins, contact, strikeouts, benching, Miley-esque, Boone-like, firing and DFA. Acceptable smileys include headbanging for anger, beer me for happiness, and potentially the band smiley for "breaking up the band" comments.

The revision of Rich Aurilia's public reputation from Ball-Hog to Tugboat doesn't seem to have ameliorated the level of complaining about him.

After last year, I've reached a zen moment about the whole Rich Aurillia thing. I think he's not a bad everyday option at 1st base for now, especially if Votto tears up AA ball and he gets a September call up.

Rich was only bothering me when he was holding better players back, and he's not doing that now. In fact, he's holding back someone who shouldn't be starting (Hatteberg) -- which kinda makes him a hero right now.

Top of 1.

Ramirez grounds to short as I swear a blue streak at WLW. Won't be the first time, certainly won't be the last.

Uggla quickly grounds to Encarnacion.

Cabrera. Foul pop. No-doubt homer to left. Ahem. Marlins announcers don't seem excited- like with some of Dunn's shots, it was so not in doubt that you don't really have time to shout.

Willingham quickly falls behind 1-2. Up high. Dribbler foul. Off the corner, full count. Hard liner right at Aurilia (so it's within his range) gloved for the out.

1-0 Florida after 0.5. Harang with a portentous first.

I love Dontrelle Willis, I gotta say that upfront. I went to college with a girl who was from Alameda who went to High School with Dontrelle and was a friend of his. We drove to Florida once to watch him pitch when he was bouncing around in AA. I've been following his career closely since he was a young 'un. Bottom of 1.

Freel. Called strike. Another one. Ball's low. Ryan's hitting .500 against lefties. Outside, ball two. Outside, ball three. Foul at the plate. Grounder right at Cabrera, but he muffs it for an error on the routine play.

440 feet on the Cabromb. I think Reds fans can relate to this little dichotomy with Miguel.

Strike to Phillips. Foul fly. Ball's outside. Fouled back. Grounder to second- Uggla makes the pickup, steps on second, and fires to first. Double play.

Two outs for the Straw that Stirs the Drink. Foul. Low and in. All three of Rich's bombs are against lefties, but he's just two for thirteen against Willis. Low and outside, three and one. I must have missed a pitch. High foul fly to RF, full count. Fly to center, caught by Abercrombie.

End of 1, 1-0 Florida.

Top of 2.

Jacobs. Taken strike. Low and in. Ball two. Swing and a miss. And again, one out.

Olivo waves at the first one. Announcer ignores the next several, but it runs to 2-2. Long fly to left, just fair, and it's 2-0. Sigh.

Cepicky, whose name is either being mispronounced or is simpler than I thought. A .222 career average in eighty games. 2-1 pitch, check swing for a strike. Taken strike three, two down.

Abercrombie. He's four for thirty so far. Think circa-1983 Eric Davis minus the plate discipline. Ball's outside. Swing and a miss. Again. Check swing foul. High and inside, ball two. Misses up high, full count. LaRue and Harang having issues connecting? Reggie slams a single up the middle.

Willis. He can hit. .230 career average. Up high, ball one. Another base hit, a liner to left. Dontrelle's first knock of 2006.

Ramirez (0-1). Swing and a miss on the elevated 89 mph fastball. Uh oh. Called strike two at the letters (92). Swing and a miss on the breaking ball, see ya.

Florida's twelve runs yesterday vaulted them from last in the league in scoring to thirteenth. Eric Milton should be receiving the ever-popular Hickory Farms gift basket shortly. Aaron Harang may be getting an array of fine sausage and cheese as well, at the rate he's going.

2-0 Florida after 1.5.

Marty's back for the bottom of 2.

Ball one to Dunn. Ball two. Fouled back. Check swing, 3-1. Ball four, inside.

Kearns. Looks at a strike. Swing and a miss (93 mph). Another wave, struck him out. One down.

Hatteberg. Reaches somehow on something I missed, moving Dunn to second. A single, I think. Yeah. Good job, Scotty.

Encarnacion. Ball one. Ball two. Ball three. Olivo to the mound. Called strike. Not even close, and the bases are loaded!

LaRue's first at bat comes at a rather important time. Watch him get behind 0-2. Nope, it's low for ball one. Fouled away. Check swing, ball two. Strike two, inside corner. Jason dislikes the call intensely. Strikeout swinging.

Sigh.

Ryan Wagner has allowed two more runs on a double to the same guy who hit the two-run homer off him. 4-0 Syracuse late.

Uggla watches a strike. Some other stuff. Grounder foul. Liner to right past Phillips for a base hit.

Cabrera. Low and away, ball one. Fouled away. Called strike two. Lined foul. Grounder to second, skillfully turned into a 4-6-3 by Phillips and Aurilia! Two outs.

Willingham. Grounds to Encarnacion, but his throw pulls Hatteberg off the bag. Error number seven for EE.

Jacobs. Two out of the strike zone. Ball three. Fastball down Broadway. Swing and a miss. Outside, ball four.

Olivo. Called strike. Inside. Another called strike. In the dirt, count evens. STRUCK HIM OUT SWINGING!

Ryan Wagner threw three wild pitches on top of the four earned runs. The Bats loaded the bases with two out in their half of the eighth, but Jesse Gutierrez popped out.

Shame of Wagner to waste Elizardo Ramirez' six shutout innings (3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K). Jake Robbins is pitching in the ninth.

Freel Baltimore-chops a base hit over Cabrera's head at third. A .519 OBP.

Phillips (0-1). Bunts up the first-base line, but it rolls foul. Ball one. Swing and a miss. Fouled back again. Low, ball two. Foul chopper. Hard-hit grounder becomes a 5-4-3 DP. Two of 'em.

Aurilia (0-1). Grounded through the middle for a single.

Dunn (BB). Tie the game already, please. K thx. He's using Night Ranger's "Sister Christian" as his music. Change that, please. K, thx. Ball one, low. Swing at a breaking ball. Another swing and a miss. Way outside, 2-2. Low, ball three. Strike three swinging on a 94mph fastball.

2-0 Florida after 3.

It's a valid worry, 8 of his 10 E's last season were throwing errors.

But he'll calm down.

I think so too. He's still a very young player.

This might be one of those situations where the Reds need Freel to create a run, if for no other reason than to get the 0 off the scoreboard.

Why are people always looking for outside excuses for why the Reds stink? The problem is a decade of incompetent pitching coaches, a completely counter-productive organizational philosophy and terrible talent evaluation. Complaining about the ballpark is like complaining about the flavor of icing on a poop cake.

Maybe someday they get a great staff and have a bunch of 4-2 games and win it all.........that would be great

Surely do wish Freel was trying to run a bit today, so he would stop getting erased on double plays...

Brilliant move putting Phillips second. Freel gets on almost every AB it seems, and so you put a ground ball contact hitter behind him. Have I mentioned before how much i LOATHE "The Book." I'm normally against book burining, but this is an exception.

FWIW, EE's OPS is now up to an even .900 after drawing a walk in his first atbat .267/.389/.511. 8 bb/9 k in 45 atbats.

Honestly, Dunn has always looked completely lost facing Willis. He's played every game, this might have been a good time to give him the day off. Lopez had a better shot at hitting Dontrelle than Dunn.

Top of 4.

---
Robbins retires the Skychiefs in order in the top of the ninth. Rob Stratton K's leading off the bottom of 9. Andy Abad flies out. Brian Buchanan K's as well, and Syracuse ends Louisville's five-game winning streak.
---

Cepicky (0-1). Ball's outside. Grounded into right for a base hit. Six safeties for Florida now.

Abercrombie (1-1). Slightly funny joke from Steve about how the Marlins could change the name of their team store to Abercrombie & Fish should Reggie become a star.

He also grounds a base hit through the general region of Brandon Phillips. Sometimes the cockeyed cap restricts vision to one side. Seven hits for Florida.

Willis (1-1). Bunts back to the mound, and Harang deftly nabs Cepicky at third. One out.

Ramirez. Strike one. ABERCROMBIE CAUGHT OFF SECOND! Throw to second, then to third to apply the tag. Will Joe Girardi Abercrombie & *****?

Two outs. Still 0-1 to Hanley. Low. Infield roller barehanded by Aurilia, but no chance. Eight hits.

Uggla (1-2). Strike one. Ball one. Breaking ball hit deep to left-center, and it's gone. A three-run homer, and Florida leads 5-0. Eighty pitches for Aaron.

Cabrera. Ball one. Swing and a miss. 94mph fastball waved at for strike two. Fouled to the screen. Struck him out swinging.

5-0 Florida after 3.5.
