We've heard he's short, but no other pitcher in the Reds system drafted prior to 2003 has had the success that Medlock has. Yeah, I know, that's not saying much, but one thing is for sure - this kid has consistently been solid each step of the way. Maybe his ceiling is nothing more than set-up or middle reliever, but you gotta think he's not far from making the big club, especially with the bullpen they have right now.

Worst case comparison: Kevin Foster
Best case: Tom "Flash" Gordon

We as a board did a lot of *****ing over Medlock's bullpen conversion and the self-fulfilling prophecy of placing a previously successful pitcher and his airtight game in a lesser role based on projections. I can link the thread if so desired.

Calvin was a draft-and-follow, so the low round in which he was drafted is not necessarily as much of an indictment of his original projectability. However, it's obvious that whoever was the big Medlock fan in the organization is no longer with the club (and I'm sure we could verify whether or not that's true, but I'm feeling lazy at the moment) and the new boss just hasn't seen it yet.

If Calvin continues to pitch as well as he has been so far this season (especially in the past ten days or so after a slightly messy start), he'll get the attention he deserves.
