Narron is apparently concerned that the pitching staff is getting complacent after too many nights seeing double-digit numbers on the scoreboard.

Kearns needs a day off.

Encarnacion? Bloody mystery to me. :(

Yep, I would personally start Encarnacion myself too and elect to give him one of the weekend games off (preferably tomorrow), but Kearns does need a day off. Regardless, this is our 11th straight game without an off day, and we're in the midst of a stretch of 16 straight games without an off day. Plus tomorrow is a day game after a night game so it's a virtual guarantee that both are back in the lineup immediately tomorrow afternoon.

This is just about trying to keep our main cogs fresh to get through this stretch of games. I wouldn't read into it anymore than that.

If I had to guess, I bet Dunn gets Sunday off vs. LHP Doug Davis. In 2004 and 2005, Dunn was 2-18 with two singles and one walk off Davis. Add in that Dunn needs a day off and Davis is a lefty, and it looks like a good afternoon for Adam to take a break.

Just a hunch.

Horrible lineup. You'd never know this is a division game.

Why would you EVER keep two of your best hitters out of the same game? Doesn't it make more sense to rotate days off so that this never happens?

Too early in the year for anything major. Teams are still evaluating their own chances. Maybe Womack or Ross/Valentin going, but nothing that would be involving two marquee players like EE and Kearns.

Especially since both are seeing their value skyrocket with every AB, it seems.

I'm showing my age here, but what's all this stuff about "having to give" guys in their 20's a rest 16 games into the season? I can remember years that the good players, barring injury, would play 158 of 162 games. They only were not in the lineup when they requested they get the night off. And while I maybe could understand one of the two right handed hitters not being in the lineup, both is just a travesty.

Why is it that we always get the same manager just with a different name and accent? I see traits of Bob Boone in both Miley and Narron. I see traits of Miley in Narron. Why doesn;t anyone in this organization hae the guts to go out and get a real manager?

And while I'm on this tirade, I wonder why every Sunday (well, most of them), we have to look at a lineup that is foreign to what we see all week? Narron is so stuck in the rut that was Boone and Miley (and other non-successful managers) that he follows his plan regardless of the situation.

I agree with you on those points. But I think, with the investments in some of these guys, some front office types are scared to run a guy into the ground. But that is still no excuse for this lineup they are fielding tonight. If nothing else, it shows how pathetic the bench is. And another thing, if anyone needs a rest on this team it is Freel. Especially since they were, before Grif got hurt, so set in their ways about telling anyone who would listen that Freel could not play every day b/c of how hard he played. This will be his 8th game in a row.

WHY? Arroyo doesn't throw a freaking knuckleball and he's not Randy Johnson. Why should we be pulling this crap?

The "personal catcher" thing seems to be a trend, maybe starting with Greg Maddux, I don't know. Catchers are an exception to the thing about not needing a lot of days off, their legs are toast by the end of the year if they don't get regular rest. So I guess the logic is, if you're going to rest the catcher every 4-5 games anyway, sync it with the pitching rotation so each starter gets to throw to the same catcher most of the time.

Maybe we allow Ross to be Arroyo's Personal Catcher to keep him happy.

I just think it's ridiculous that a guy with 30-some career wins gets to designate a guy as his personal catcher. That's the kind of perk you get when you a) have done 10 years in the bigs and developed a relationship with a player, or b) throw a pitch some of your catchers can't handle.

EDIT: If Arroyo is the one that wants Ross catching him, that is. I understand the rotation issue but we do now have three catchers on the roster and both Val and LaRue are much better hitters.

Does Arroyo typically drop down and do a sidearm every once in awhile? I hadn't seen that with him, but he did that to Moeller, unless my eyes deceived me.

Yeah, he does. He threw about 10-15% of his pitches sidearm on Sunday.

Yes.. he changes arm angles a lot. Arroyo relies on deception quite a bit.

It's funny McCracken is playing tonight. I bought a box of about 10,000 baseball cards summer before last and have been selling them on eBay, mostly in team groups, but I've pulled out some individual cards, plus I had the newer teams set aside. I found a 1998 McCracken card his first year with the Devil Rays.

He'll change his arm slot from time to time just to give the batters a different look.
