Aurilia's not going to be happy....honestly, I'd put him at 1st, he's done well and deserves to play in my opinion.

I agree that Aurilia deserves to play. Hatteberg has been hitting better lately, but even so, Aurilia at first defensively and offensively is an upgrade.

He will be back in there at 1B tomorrow against the lefty. But I agree that Richie has played well, and I have come around regarding him this year. I think the big reason why I like Aurilia this year is that he seems to be less of a "me" player, and more of a "we" player. He seems to have accepted his role of utility infielder, sort of like a Dave Concepcion from 1987-88 with a lot more pop in his bat!

The batting order for today is almost exactly how I would have it. I would switch the Cat in the Hatte and EZ-E, and otherwise leave it alone. My lineup (with today's personnel):

Freel cf
Lopez ss
Dunn lf
Kearns rf
Encarnacion 3b
Hatteberg 1b
Phillips 2b
LaRue c
Claussen p

Aurilia hasn't hit righties well this year.

ba-.185 / obp -.185 / slg -.259 / ops .444

he has 25 ab's against RH and 27 against LH.

Hatteberg OTOH, has a line against RH of ba -.290 / obp-.450 / slg-.484 / ops- .934 in 31 ab's.

I don't see any reason for RA to be in there against RH pitching at this point. Although i will admit I like him better defensively at 1B than Hatteberg.

Aurilia .269 .304 .500 .804

Hatteberg .308 .460 .462 .922

With Hatteberg getting on base at a .460 clip, it's puzzling why he gets grief around here, and it's even more puzzling why he gets that grief at Aurilia's expense.

Hatteberg and Aurilia have both performed admirably and should both continue to be in the rotation. Hatteberg will sit tomorrow for Aurilia with Davis starting.

To say Aurilia should be in there instead of Hatteberg is nothing short of bias. And the defense is not that much different. This is the best lineup the Reds can put out there right now, except I'd flip Hatteberg and EE in the order.

I think they make a pretty good cheap 1B platoon. Although I'd like to see Hatteberg batting lower in the lineup and I'm not super happy with SH's defense thus far.

Not a bad looking lineup at all. And with Claussen on the mound, I like our chances.

'Tis a shame that Dunn can't head to first when Junior comes back. Honestly, that lineup would be killer.

I'm not giving him grief, and I do like the lineup....I just think right now, somehow, someway, Rich deserves PT. He's done well.

However, having so many guys who deserve PT with only 8 spots to fill isn't a bad problem to have...and it gives the team breathing room to make a trade down the line. Assuming our Redlegs stay in the hunt, I believe a trade will happen.

I agree, it's got to be some of the following.

Scrappy Factor... plus Aurilia makes loud outs, nice facial exprressions and very gamer body language, very emotional guy... very east coast. Hatteberg has a choppy little swing and little power, and he's quiet and laid back, very west coast plus he's the new type 2 FA in town, and a Moneyball refuge always an easy target.

But it's clear his doing well has been against LH pitching. Why put him in situations where he's not likely to succeed?

Hatteberg also started off slowly -- not a lot of hitting but a lot of good PAs that drew walks. He's been really hitting better in the last few games.

I think some of the dislike is residual from that.

I like Top Hatt hitting ahead of EzE. Hatt getting on base against righties at a .450 clip and Encarnacion is slugging .545 against them. Should provide some RBI ops for a hot hitter throughout the game.

So far the REDS bullpen has given the best support to Brandon Claussen in terms of ERA...

* Claussen: 9 IP, 3 ER, 3.00 ERA.
* Williams: 14 IP, 7 ER, 4.50 ERA.
* B Arroyo: 8.1 IP, 6 ER, 6.48 ERA.
* Eric Milton: 9 IP, 7 ER, 7.00 ERA.
* Harang: 13.1 IP, 11 ER, 7.43 ERA.

So far the offense has given the least support to Brandon Claussen in terms of Runs per Game...

* Claussen: 3G, 16R, 5.33 R/G.
* Williams: 3 G, 18R, 6.00 R/G.
* B Arroyo: 4G, 27R, 6.75 R/G.
* Er Milton: 3G, 21R, 7.00 R/G.
* Harang: 4 G, 28R, 7.00 R/G.

Notice how the orders are the same. Those who get the most offense also get the bad BP... vice versa.

Dunn again swings at a ball. He needs a day off. For some reason he swings at everything when he slumps.

That inning went down hill fast. I like Freel - but he isn't the smartest player out there. Why he continues to try to steal third base I don't know why, especially when the best hitters are coming up.

David Bush is the type of pitcher the Reds always make look great. I hope that trend doesn't continue today.

I tend to look at it as a percentages game. If Freel steals bases at a 70% clip, he has a better chance of making it to 2nd on an SB than he does waiting for a the batter to move him over, since even the best Reds hitters only reaches base a little under 40% of the time.

I agree with you on 3rd base, though. He's fast enough that he's coming in on anything out of the infield -- it's not a smart risk.

Cnances of scoring from 3rd with one out is about 60-70%. From second about 25-30%. The odds favour Freel trying to steal third if he thinks he can make it. He looked safe.
