I like this line-up, however.. even though Hatte is a lefty I would play Aurilia over him, he's really coming up big in clutch spots this season. I guess it looks like Ross is going to catch Arroyo everytime out... We really need to trade one of our catchers for some kind of pitching help, bullpen-starter-anything....

Hatteberg vs. RH pitching has been much better than Aurilia.

That .515 OPS with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI against righties screams take a seat to me.

Hatteberg OTOH has an OPS against RH of .864

Of course, bashing the Nationals pretty much locks them to have every line drive that did not fall last night be trumped by twelve bloop singles that produce eight runs today as they win by double digits.

That is definitely the MO of past years teams, lets see if this one can keep the hammer down on inferior teams like this. I for one would like to see a 6-1 road trip after having to sit through Saturday's debacle in Milwaukee

Good point - but I would come back with Hatteberg has 60 plate appearances, almost all of them in the 5 hole (with a couple more in the third I believe) and has 4 RBI and only 7 runs scored. He is a statue of the basepaths which negates his OBP a little and even though he has continually batted with people on base has not been able to translate that BA nor that OBP into either runs driven in nor runs scored.

He might have a nice OBP but for a number 5 hitter he's no Dunn.

membengal
04-26-2006, 12:30 PM
But, I would guess, some of his walks are pushing others into scoring position (or keeping them there without giving up an out), hence some of the RBI goodness for EE and Phillips...

SH has 38 ab's againt RH, RA 33, but points well taken. Hatteberg should bat no higher than 7th IMO.

Did anyone notice that Jose Vidro (He went 3-for-5 on Tuesday to raise his season average to .377. He leads the team in RBIs, with 15) isn't playing today? That's really good for us.

As well as Valentin's swinging the bat against RHP (.324/.359/.486) and since there are 3 C's on the roster, I wouldn't mind seeing him at 1B on a day like today, if he's not going to start at C.

Yeah, you're right - I'd rather have Hatteberg out there versus a righthander. My problem is with where he is batting. People keep throwing out his awesome OBP, so I was just pointing out its hollow because of his statuesqueness (not even sure thats a word) and the fact that dude has been batting fifth against righties all year yet only has 4 RBI and 7 runs scored. Numbers much worse than they should be based on his OBP and his BA.

Hatteberg should be batting 7th, thats all I'm saying.

Top of 1.

Freel. Waves at the first pitch and we're underway. Foul. Breaking ball down; check swing. Foul again. Called strike three! One down. The radar gun shows "94".

Lopez. Called strike to him, too. He hits a fly ball to center that's caught. Two outs.

Dunn. 1-1 count, shift is on. Chopped foul. Low, ball two. Up high, count's full. He grounds out. Inning over.

14 pitches for Ortiz after one.

After 0.5, scoreless.

Bottom of 1.

Soriano (.326). First pitch is up and in. Second pitch popped to short right, one quick out. Alfonso is one for twelve lifetime against Bronson Arroyo.

Anderson (.111). Shouldn't bat this high. Strike one. Two out of the strike zone, then strike two called. Marlon pounds one into the LCF gap, but Freel catches up to it with relative ease. Two down.

Johnson (.394, tops in the NL). High, ball one. Sharply-hit grounder to second. Phillips gloves it and throws him out from a kneeling position. Three down.

Quick inning, just nine pitches.

After 1, no score.

Dunn gets to 3&2 and then grounds to 2b

My brain might be slightly addled from this morning's labor law examination -- but shouldn't Dunn start trying to do something about that shift they're putting on him?

Not change his PA, but maybe just drop a few bunts down toward 3b until they stop doing it. He's losing base hits and making easy outs by allowing the defense to cheat like that.

Encarancion (.279). Called strike. Notice a pattern? Swing and a miss, 0-2. Check swing, but it's strike three!

Doc. Scott

Ward (.357). Five hits this season- two are homers. 1-0 pitch is bounced briskly to Hatteberg. One out.

Zimmerman (.237). 2-2 count with two strikes looking. Fouled at the plate. Another. Successful check to run the count full. CHANGE SWUNG ON AND MISSED! Two outs.

Church (.273). Four bombs in 33 at-bats. Tellingly, none at RFK. Strike called. Ball one. Fouled away, 1-2. High popup, out of play. A third foul. A fourth. Count evens, ball two. CHANGE SWUNG ON AND MISSED, but the ball gets through Ross and Church is safe at first! It's a wild pitch on Bronson.

Clayton (.257). Strike called. Fouled away. CHANGE SWUNG ON AND MISSED! End of inning.

Marc Lancaster talks about the Remains of the Day being claimed by Washington, but adds little this time around. His blog and column are too complete. Griffey's return... nope, not much. They're being conservative. Ryan Freel is batting .220 on the road trip. What will the Reds do with him? Marty thinks Quentin McCracken should stay. Marc thinks Cody Ross is staying (meaning he disagrees). Go, Marc.

Top of 3.

Phillips (.360, 0 BB). Called strike, oddly enough. Swing and a miss. Another swing-and-drop, but Schneider successfully throws to first. One out. Three strikeouts for Ortiz.

Ross (.261). Fouled back. Up high, ball one. HIT DEEP TO LEFT, SORIANO LOOKS UP, SEE YA! UPPER DECK HOMER!

1-0 Reds. #3 for Dave. And a bomb, too.

Arroyo (.222). Back-to-back. Low liner to the SS Clayton, two down. Denied.

Freel (0-1). Fouled away. Check swing, ball's low. Low and in, ball two. Called strike on the outside corner, questionable. Last night was the first time Freel's failed to reach base in a game. Grounder to short, and that ends the inning.

1-0 Reds after 2.5. Ortiz is at 38 pitches. St. Louis leads Pittsburgh 1-0 on an RBI single by Scott Spiezio. No score in the bottom of 2 between Atlanta and Milwaukee.

Not having real ownership to promote the product doesn't help, but DC is a lousy baseball town. In fact, outside of the Redskins, it's a pretty horrible sports town.

Both the Caps and the Wizards were very well supported this year. The attendance issues at RFK are largely due to the people of DC being very upset about the ownership/team situation, and the way the stadium deal went down. Once an ownership group is named, and that group begins building their own team, the crowds will follow.

Bottom of 3.

Schneider (.180). Called strike. Another. Fastball's high. Ball's outside. Grounder, right side. Phillips from the outfield grass to the covering Arroyo, one out.

Ortiz (.250). Ball's outside. Called strike. High strike, 1-2. Fouled away. Another grounder to Phillips, two out.

Soriano (0-1). 11-game hit streak. 2-1 count. Foul. Fastball high, full count. CHANGE SWUNG ON AND MISSED! Four Ks.

I have 46 as Bronson's pitch count. The WP-K screwed Sportsline up.

Top of 4.

Lopez (0-1). Ball one, low. Called strike. Low and away, 2-1. LINED into left field, base hit!

Dunn (0-1). Big slump for AD. LINER TO RIGHT BASE HIT! Even against the shift. First and second, nobody out.

Kearns (0-1). Swing and a miss on the breaking ball. Tapper back to the mound and ORTIZ THROWS IT INTO CENTER FIELD! Tailor-made DP ball becomes a run for the Reds and men on the corners with none out! 2-0 Reds.

Ah, Ramon and his fielding foibles. Remember this (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=250807117)?

Mangione (0-1). Two bad ones put Chuck up 2-0. Strike. Ball's outside, 3-1. High, ball four! WALK! WALK! Bases loaded.

Edwin (0-1). Slider waved at. Another slider, another wave. Ow. Fly to shallow left-center, and THE BALL DROPS IN FRONT OF CHURCH! HE OVERRUNS THE BALL! Two runs score- one RBI- and the Reds lead 4-0! Two Es for the Nats today.

Phillips (0-1). Nine-game hit streak. Popped foul, and juuust foul. 0-1. Swing and a miss at the slider. Huh. Strikeout swinging on the slider. One out.

Ross (1-1, HR). Will he be intentionally passed? Why, yes he will. Bases loaded again.

Arroyo (0-1). Danger. He'll swing for the fences given the situation, so that's good. Taken high, ball one. Called strike. Taken strike two. That's not his style, man. LINER TO LEFT! Caught by Soriano, and the speedy Mangione can't score from third. Two outs.

Freel (0-2). Ninth man to bat. Taken strike. Another strike. Must be too tired to swing. Check swing, just low. 1-2. Taken strike three!

4-0 Reds when it should be 1-0 still. Gotta love that Nats D. We head to the bottom of the fourth.

Atlanta now leads Milwaukee 1-0 on an RBI hit by Marcus Giles.

DC is not a bad baseball town. There is a huge market here, and even since the Nats have came, MLB has continued to dump on D.C.

The tv deal is terrible. Bud Selig gave the TV rights to Peter Angelos, owner of the O's. Angelos formed his own network and won't let Comcast, the dominant cable provider show the games unless they cover his "network."

Additionally, with no ownership, payroll is small despite decent attendance.

"Should we call you 'Nick' or 'Mister Dick?"

"Just Nick"

I actually had that in mind prior to the Top Secret reference.

Wasn't deep and he would have probably nailed any Red that wasn't under 6 feet

I don't know how deep the fly was. But if it was close to being deep enough to send a runner, you have to send the guy there. Soriano has been playing LF all of what? 3 weeks? He has had troubles in the past throwing the ball to 1st base playing 2nd base. WHy not test his arm when he is 5 times the lengh away?
