Home from a date!?! It's only 9:45!

If Biggio had an ounce of scrappiness in him at all, he would have dove and kept Phillips ball on the infield.

I just moved to another part of my office, where instead of large cubicles, we downsized to where we can see everybody else working. Needless to say, I'm not happy about that move, but if we can hold on and gain first place in the NL Central, then I'll call my new workspace "lucky."

That's a great crowd for this early in the year!! I guess there's a buzz starting around this team. I hope they can keep it up because I haven't had this much fun as a fan in years. In years past when they've started off well you knew they'd tail off, but I've got a feeling about this group. Not saying to print playoff tickets or anything, but I think they can make some noise.

No worries - just didn't see you around - thought you might had went south instead of north....It was Friends and Family Night and the place was packed as usual. I buy 4 tickets mostly for the hats (black with the green logo this year). I was going to give Buckeye a hat tomorrow at the game - but I seem to have a bad time with giving the hats to fans that have been drinking at a game...;)

I had a social obligation tonight--I know, what the hell was I thinking; but I missed the game. Wow. This is super exciting news. Congrats to the Reds on breaking the spell. Fun squad so far. I think Aaron can match up with Pettitte.

I was away tonight too but just watched it on TiVo. The homer looked legit. If the fan would not have caught it, it would have clanged off of the foul pole. Looked like a pretty good catch too.

That's what I never understood about Linder, if you build a successfull team in Cincinnatti the people will come to the park. However, if you field a DanO special your going to draw 14 thousand.

Man I am begining to love this team. We finally have a team that has enough speed to manufacture some runs when the game is tight, and finally have a team that is patient enough at the plate to get to a guy like Oswalt. We could honestly contend through most of the year imo.

so the Berkamn homer was legit?

Yep. A fan reached around the pole and nabbed it; but it was shown that it would have hit the pole.

Maybe this fan should be in LF instead of Dunn? ;)

Gridiron Player of the Game:

Brandon Phillips 3-4 2 Runs 2 RBI 2B
2 RBI's to give the Reds the 3 run lead and the runs needed to win

Coffey gets Very Honorable Mention for the 2 IP 1K 1BB 1 H

EAT IT Oswalt!

Rick White getting the final 2 outs in the 6th was huge as well. Coffey was pretty bad in the 7th, but gave up nothing and then had a great 8th inning.

It was a windy night at GAB, but it was fun to see the Reds do just enough to beat Oswalt.

It was? They kept showing the flags as "still".

BTW, here's the Astros article in MLBs "wrap". I guess Oswalt lost because he was "under the weather".

Oswalt, Houston fall to streaking Reds
Astros ace loses for first time in 16 decisions against Cincinnati
By Alyson Footer / MLB.com

CINCINNATI -- All streaks eventually come to an end, but considering how well Roy Oswalt has been pitching this year, it seemed unlikely his career-long dominance over the Cincinnati Reds would be over Friday night.
But Oswalt was far from masterful before 32,089 fans at Great American Ball Park, and the Reds beat the Astros, 5-4, handing the Houston right-hander his first-ever loss to Cincinnati.

Oswalt entered this game with a 15-0 record versus the Reds, a streak that began during Oswalt's rookie year in 2001. The 15 wins were spread over 19 appearances, including 17 starts. He had won his previous seven starts against them, dating back to Aug. 1, 2004. His last no-decision was May 3 of that season.

"That's pretty good," manager Phil Garner said. "He can start another five-year run if he wants to, and that would be fine with me. That's a nice streak. It's pretty incredible. I don't know how to explain those kinds of things, but that's a pretty good streak."

It's difficult to figure out why a pitcher would be so dominant for so long against a team that, in this day and age of Major League Baseball, has changed dramatically over the years. But figuring out why Oswalt wasn't so good Friday night takes a lot less thought. Although he wouldn't admit it, he was clearly under the weather, as evidenced by the coughing and sniffling that was prevalent while answering questions from reporters postgame.

Oswalt blamed his outing on bad location, mainly.

"I wasn't close to the plate most of the night," he said. "It was one of those nights where you had to battle to stay in the game. I didn't really have anything to go with later in the game, the sixth, seventh inning. I felt better in the first four. I was battling."

Oswalt, who snapped a seven-game winning streak dating back to last Sept. 21, issued consecutive walks to Felipe Lopez and Adam Dunn in the opening frame, and the Reds produced nine baserunners over the next four innings. Reds starting pitcher Brandon Claussen drove in Cincinnati's second run with a grounder to second, and the third was scored on a sacrifice fly by Austin Kearns.

But the fact that the Reds scored more on sound fundamentals than solid hitting wasn't much of a comfort to Oswalt.

"I wasn't throwing the ball where I wanted," he said. "I didn't have a breaking pitch the whole night. I had to pitch with the fastball, and I didn't get it where I wanted to, either. It could have been a lot worse."

"He wasn't as sharp," Garner said. "He was missing his locations all night long. I'd look at the [score]board at replays and I'd see Brad [Ausmus] setting up away, and the ball would be up and in. A couple balls that they hit, he'd set up in, and they were back over the plate. They'd run across the plate. Even at that, we're still in the ballgame."

Mike Gallo and Chad Qualls teamed to allow two Reds runs in the seventh. Gallo yielded a one-out single to Dunn, and Qualls allowed a single to Scott Hatteberg before striking out Kearns.

Qualls was one strike away from working out of the inning, but Brandon Phillips snuck a slow roller past the mound and up the middle past Craig Biggio and Chris Burke. Two runs scored on the hit, putting the Reds ahead by three.

That inning would prove to be big for Cincinnati, considering Lance Berkman knocked a two-run shot off David Weathers in the ninth, cutting the lead to one.

"They hit a weak ground ball right up the middle, and nobody could get to it," Qualls said. "I made my pitch, they just made contact."

Qualls admitted it was more frustrating to give up runs on a slow roller that could have been playable had it gone a few inches to either side.

"I put myself in that situation and then put myself in one to get out of the situation," he said. "I made my pitch and everything I needed to do, I did. The outcome just didn't go my way."

"That's what happens when they put the ball in play," Garner said. "Sometimes they're caught and a lot of times they'll sneak away. I think that's the biggest difference with [the Reds] this year. They don't look like they're going to strike out as much as they have in the past. Putting the ball in play, things are going to happen."
