Philips batting 7th?

I think it's best to leave him where he's been doing well. He's not going to hit .356 forever.

Big Klu
04-29-2006, 12:26 PM
Phillips is doing very well in the 7th spot. It's not a high-pressure spot in the order, and young players often have a measure of success in that spot. Since he is comfortable there, leave him at 7th and let him do his thing.

Barbarossa
04-29-2006, 01:00 PM
He's probably the most dangerous 7th hitter in the National League right now.:beerme:

TeamBoone

Plus, he usually has runners on base in front of him.

There's no major weak spot in that lineup.

OnBaseMachine

Harang now looks awful; he is working behind in the count to every hitter, and when you do that you make bad hitters like Jason Lane look good. Runs will be hard to come by with Pettitte on the hill today, so Harang had better settle down.

I was giving him credit. Lane couldn't survive if he didn't capitalize on moments like that 3-0 pitch. He'll always be a fairly bad hitter vs. RHPs (he's great vs. LHPs), but he keeps himself in an everyday job because he's been able to zone in on his key hitting opportunities.

I fully agree not every hitter would have pounced on that pitch. Jason Lane knows he has to pounce there.

1-2 on the pitcher with your catcher on 1B, no outs and the toughest to run on pitcher-catcher battery in the majors on the field, I'd try to steal the base. It's so crazy ... it ... just ... might ... work.

It's the old "we should send Sean Casey on this pitch" theory...

The shock of seeing him running might cause the catcher to become distracted and airmail the throw into CF.

Is there a scrappier way to score a run than an infield hit, advancing on a single by the pitcher, stealing 3rd, then coming home when the 4th ball of a walk gets away from the catcher?

No, there isn't, it's the S-factor.

The interesting thing about the way the reds have been doing things lately is that they haven't been winning with homers. Any one know how long its been since the last reds homer. Ross' is the last one I can remember, which is probably just because it was a long one. They are doing the little things they didn't do last year, which is largely due to Narron's influence IMO (Krivsky too). They also seem to make big defensive plays when they need to. Just some thoughts

Felipe swung at three straight bad pitches. A walk there would have been nice.
We just scored 4 runs against one of the leagues best pitchers, on a bunch of walks and crapp and speed. The inning went very well. Sometimes pitches start out looking better than they end up. That's what makes pitchers like Pettite real good.

Why is it every time we score now I find myself screaming "Scrapppy!" at the top of my lungs?

Because this team's offense can beat you so many different ways. There's a dynamic aspect to the team that was missing last year -- speed at various parts of the lineup, fearlessness when taking the extra base on the basepaths, power up and down the batting order, and now run-producers at the back end to pick up the middle of the lineup. Plus, with the exception of Phillips, every hitter is adept at taking pitches and forcing the pitcher to throw balls in the zone.

They were fearsome last year, but this year it's even more impressive.

Great hustle by Phillips! 4-2 Reds.

This cannot be emphasized enough. Phillips has been crucial to this nice run the team has been on. Crucial. Bat, glove and legs. That was simply a heads up base-running play by Phillips...first to swipe third, then to get home on the ball four wild pitch.

The interesting thing about the way the reds have been doing things lately is that they haven't been winning with homers.

Aurilia's jack aside, it goes directly to a few things we've talked about ad infinitum on the board in recent years. The Reds have gotten younger and more athletic and the team fields a more diverse offense.

We've all seen what Ryan Freel at the top of the lineup has meant over the past few years. How his OB/speed combo adds an element the had lacked for years. Felipe Lopez, against all odds, has gone from an atrocious baserunner to a pretty good one too. Now you add in Encarnacion and Phillips and suddenly you've got players taking extra bases with regularity. On top of that, Encarnacion is the kind of doubles machine who makes all that OB up in front of him all the more deadly. The TB sting Phillips has brought to the table only helps on that front.

What the Reds have done this year is build upon the things they do well like get on base and crush homers instead of what so many have called for over the years, which is abandon the things they do well in the pursuit of boosting their peripherals skills.

Note that it was Dunn and Kearns drawing some BBs that opened the floodgates on Pettitte.
