Why don't they move Phillips up in the order? Even with his power, I think he could do well in the 2 hole. And when Grif gets back, is there any chance of him hitting leadoff when Freel is on the bench??

Based on a couple of starts?

Even the Lizard piched well last game.

Buchholz might keep piching well, but 2 starts deosn't make you Ozwalt quite yet. I think he beat the Brewers and the Pirates. The Reds hit much better. We'll see how he does, but he does have good potential.

You're right, and it KILLS him. He has excellent control and can get ahead of batters easily. Give him a nasty pitch that can fool batters and he could be a legitimately solid MLB pitcher. But until then, it's just waiting for him to come back with a fastball.

I dropped in to see what condition the board's condition was in, but...

Valentin's at-bat was the worst one I've seen in some time. Take a strike down the middle of the heart of the plate, swing a a pitch in the dirt, and hit a ball almost over your head to a fly out. Good stuff.

Their pitcher is averaging 10 pitches per inning or so. That's not good. Freel hits the first pitch and so on.

IIRC he really started to run out of gas in his last start at around 90 and never made it to 100. They also said it was his longest start of the year, his first time making it out of the 6th inning all season. At his current pace of over 20 pitches an inning so far today, I'll be surprised (pleasantly) to see him make it through the 5th.

Phillips flies out on the second pitch. A lot of first and second pitch outs today by the Reds. Maybe they should have read that article in the Enquirer today on Chris Chambliss and his preaching of patience. ;)

Buchholz's fastball looks hittable because he occasionally leaves it belt-high, but when hitters swing at it it's like hitting a mound of cinderblocks covered in epoxy.

Just looking at his minor league numbers, he doesn't look like he should be anything special...

He compares pretty closely to Justin Germano, actually. Both were 23 years old at the AAA level.

Yeah, OBM already brought this up. The results for Buchholz aren't there, but that's been mostly due to injury. So in terms of production, he's been terribly mediocre. But his stuff is fantastic. If you've ever seen him pitch live, his stuff and especially his curve are jawdropping. It looks like he's finally starting to put his stuff together with some pitching acumen.

Pleasantly surprised. I'm putting my crow in the microwave right now in fact...

Belisle seems to be a much better pitcher when he gets a sufficient amount of time to warmup. He'd been throwing for almost 2 innings when he came into this game.

He's a starter being pounded into the square peg reliever hole. It's not where he needs to be for long-term success, IMO.

Plate coverage doesn't always mean taking every pitch... but it should never mean swinging at a ball that fools you so much that it slices opposite field with such a lack of authority.
