What Reds used the Pink Bats today?

Missed the game today. So what Reds used the pink bats? They should raise some nice coin when they hit mlb auctions. I'd love to have one, maybe some no count guys will go cheap....I just saw Thome go yard with one and Bill Hall hit a walk off with the pink bat. Wonder if some guys will keep using them if they can......

Thanks........just watching Sox-Twins on espn game tonight, quite a few are using them on both teams. I'd say over half and all the big names Thome, Konerko and Hunter. AJ just went yard with one. Maybe more Reds should have used them, couldn't have hurt.

Eckstein, Speizio, and Edmonds used them in the Cardinals game. Eckstein and Speizio only used them for one or two at bats, but Edmonds used it for the rest of the game.

Speizio's bat matched the little pink thing he has growing on his chin. lol

Maybe it's not politically correct to say, but I think there'd be greater opportunity for corporate synergy with the Breast Cancer research movement if the people in charge had picked a more "useful" color than pink.

Pink is THE color of breast cancer awareness and research. To use any other color would defeat the purpose. And why the heck would the people in the stands care what color bats they're using? Arroyo uses a red bat; do they dislike that too?

In addition to Griffey, Dunn used his regular one in his last AB as well.

And hopefully LaRue's pink bat will bring more money as he hit a home run with it.

Both teams were back to their normal bats when the game went into extras. I guess the agreement was only for 9 innings.

I don't think he was saying they should have used blue bats when the color is pink. I think he was saying perhaps they should have chosen a different color back when the whole thing started.

Exactly. I get the whole "pink = women" kinda thing -- but if the goal was to try and use the color to increase awareness among all people, it's a lot more difficult to include "pink" into sporting events like baseball and football.

I'm in favor of the idea, and I hope they raise a lot of money with this promotion...but, then again, I think we should be raising awareness and money for ALL kinds of cancer research as opposed to focusing on just one specific issue.

Here's the thing: funding for female-specific cancers (breast, ovarian) severely lags behind research-funding for universal cancers (lung, liver) and male-specific cancers (prostate, testicular). They're just trying to gain ground in the funding area, before it gets shoveled to erectile dysfunction research again. :)

I remember reading something years ago about Japan not approving a breast cancer drug for 10 years - but it only took about a half a year to approve Viagra! :angry:

Jason LaRue's pink bat - the one that hit a home run in the fifth inning of the Reds' 2-1 loss Sunday to the Phillies - will go to his mother, Melanie.

Other pink bats he was issued as part of Major League Baseball's Mother's Day program to create awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection will be auctioned off later this year.

"This one," said LaRue, looking at the pink Louisville Slugger bat bearing his mother's name and the smudge where he'd hit the home-run ball, "is not being sold. But the others ones are, because it's for a great cause. It's great we could do it all across baseball."

Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr. also used pink Louisville Sluggers during the nine innings of regulation play, but switched to their normal bats when the game moved into extra innings.

With their pink bats, Dunn hit a fly-out just to the front of the center-field wall and lined out to second base, and Griffey lined out just in front of the right-field fence in the eighth inning.

Griffey tagged it; most everybody in Great American Ball Park thought it was going to be a three-run homer.

"We were trying to change our luck a little bit," Dunn said of switching back.

"Nothing against the pink bats. They're the same wood."

Reds shortstop Felipe Lopez used a pink bat Sunday, too, as part of the spotlight being shed on breast cancer and the importance of early detection.

It's just that his bat wasn't as bright a pink color as the Louisville Sluggers being swung by teammates Adam Dunn, Jason LaRue and Ken Griffey.

Lopez's bats are made by Old Hickory. They are made of maple wood, not the Kentucky white ash of the Louisville Sluggers.


The Old Hickory was a lighter shade of pink, more of a pastel. Some of the Phillies hitters were using Old Hickory, too.

"It is for a good cause," Lopez said. "We were glad to do it."

Lopez had another good day at the plate, 2-for-5 and a walk, and his 12th-inning single put the Reds in position to possibly win it. Lopez has had many big hits this season, but it's stealing bases where he has made his mark.

He reiterated the credit he has been giving to first-base coach Billy Hatcher.

"He keeps me aggressive," Lopez said. "He tells me what pitcher's move to look for, what count is good to run on. He knows I have speed; he just wants me to use it, not be afraid to be picked off. That's the big thing about stealing, not to be afraid, not to be hesitant."

Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips will start at shortstop today in the Hall of Fame exhibition game in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Lopez doesn't want out of the lineup. He doesn't want to rest for games when they count.

"I'm not tired," he said. "If I had to play (today), I would, but it will be good to have the day off."

Reds manager Jerry Narron said it will be good to give Phillips a look at short; every team needs depth.

Phillips said he's looking forward to playing short.

"I came up as a shortstop," he said. "I like playing shortstop."

I though these were MLB property and the game used ones had to go up for auction. LaRue is just going to keep his home run bat? I hope this doesn't turn into Lebron James bit. Where NBA had to have David Stern go and get his game used all-star jersey from him, because all jerseys had been spoken for in some type of deal.........Come on LaRue I'm sure your can afford to bid on it and win it.....

I've done the tour twice and the team pays for the bats according to the guide. This deal may be different. I wouldn't be surprised if MLB wrote the check for the pink bats. I though the idea was for the game used bats to go to auction. They did make extras for players to keep. LaRue is kinda defeating the whole purpose of the idea. The bats that are going to raise the biggest money are the big names and home runs bats.....I will ask the question on the pink bats next time i'm there.....on who paid for them....and who technically owns them.....I'll be doing the tour a few times this summer, anybody who visits down here wants to go there. I do think it's first class museum and operation Louisville Slugger has there....If you haven't been there, it's a must for baseball fan.....

A few are now up for auction now on mlb.com.....The Dunn bat is way over 2k right now...kinda surprising ..here is a link to it...also Lopez and Jr bats are up.....wonder what the final hammer will be....I do see Jr bat ending up more than Dunn. Quite a few hardcore Griffey collector's out there.....

Glad this was brought back because it reminded me of something I meant to post. I'm not going to go searching for the write-up, but I read that LaRue had two pink bats... one for his mom and one for auction.

I read somewhere that player's got up to 10-12 bats each.......Here is the LaRue bat up for auction.....It doesn't look like it was game used, probally just one that was in the bat rack.........mlb considers pre game... ect as game used........he did have his mom's name on his......
