Scouting Report:
Ramirez looked sharp en route to earning his second victory of the season, a 7-3 win over the Brewers on Tuesday night. He allowed three runs on five hits, struck out three, and walked three in five innings. His control got him into trouble in the third, when he walked two batters with two outs and a man on, then allowed a bases-clearing double. This will be his first career appearance against the Cubs.

This will be Wood's third start of the season. The Cubs are concerned about his cranky right shoulder and pushed Wood back a day. In his last outing against the Marlins, he gave up two hits but walked five over five innings while striking out three. The right-hander had not thrown between starts because of soreness in his shoulder.

I was going to pick on the Cubs for having Todd Walker hitting cleanup until I noticed the Reds had Rich Aurilia hitting cleanup against a right-hander again.

Aurilia is .218/.259/.327 against RHPs this season and in no way does he merit this kind of job in the lineup. He almost lost the game yesterday when he couldn't deliver in a key situation.

Agreed M2, a professional hitter must get that run in from third. The K looking made it even more of a debacle.

The cubs and their bullpen had a long day yesterday so the key to the game will be to make Wood throw alot of pitches early and get to the bullpen.

Is there supposed to be a smiley after that? Larue sucks. Enough said.

Dusty decided he'd copy Narron and insert the scrappy vet Todd Walker in the clean up spot too. It looks like Dusty just picked names out of a hat.

I agree with TB, what the heck does Kearnsy have to do to move up in the lineup?

Let's try not to turn this into yesterday's game thread, but LaRue has shown over his career he is better than Valentin.

OPS correlates to runs scored awfully well and LaRue beats Valentin no matter how you slice it.

LaRue:
Career- .744
2006- .681 (68 at-bats)
2005- .807
2004- .765

Valentin:
Career- .696
2006- .661 (73 at-bats)
2005- .882
2004- .674

I see no reason to believe that Valentin is better than LaRue. LaRue is a top 10-15 catcher in baseball.

Before we start, let's have a good day on my first game thread of the year. I was also just thinking that the Cubs may have done the worst recent thing to a player in what they have done to Kerry Wood. I think that they have almost completely ruined his career by pushing too much. He will never be the same.

I look for the Reds to strike out ten times today, and 90% of those strikeouts to be "taken" since the Reds tend to strike out swinging against Pseudo-Cy-Young'ers, and think that bonafide Cy Young type pitchers (even if they are coming off injuries) will miss the strike zone 90% of the time.

I don't. They have the money to poney over for extra pitching, and they have a decent offense. Getting 'The Rocket' wouldn't be a smart acquisition, in my opinion, but if the light bulb goes off they could pull off some dandy moves and blow the rest of the league away. They're better than the Reds at this point, it's just that the Reds got away with playing "small ball" (I know, normally not their cup of tea, they have a lineup of 9 sluggers).

Is it funny that our defensive catcher David Ross is actually providing some of the better offensive numbers so far this year? I am not ready to give up yet on LaRue as maybe it might take him awhile to come back from the surgery and get healthy, but should Ross get more time?

redsfan4445
05-29-2006, 05:25 PM
Ross is showing me he is a better hitter and a better caller of a game behind the plate.. time to get LaRue and package him with nothr player and make a trade to help the bullpen..

FeartheEars
05-29-2006, 05:28 PM
Battling all day to keep it close and then having the bullpen ice it by giving up runs late is really starting to get old. Very few pitchers in the bullpen can be trusted. Stormy is solid at time, not a closer by any stretch. Coffey has been excellent. Merker needs to regain form or else him, White, and Shackelford will continue to put the game out of reach for the reds late. How long will Hammond's success last? White needs to be DFA ASAP. I don't care who is brought up. We have to have something down in AAA that's servicable right?

Just as an aside here...a curiosity, I guess...

On the ESPN recap of the game the Freel hit in the top of the ninth is listed as a homer in the 'scoring summary' on the box score page and also shows as a homer on the Scoreboard header page under the line score. Is someone trying to tell us that they agree with the obvious on this one?

Could they possibly have changed it after the game? Not that it would make any difference, but I guess it would in the stat columns (for Freel and # of HRs given up by the pitcher).

I doubt they'd do that though; I don't ever remember hearing anything like that happening in the past.
