Nuxhall hospitalized

CHICAGO -- Joe Nuxhall has been hospitalized in Fairfield and diagnosed with pneumonia.

Saw him briefly before Friday night's game and he seemed to be having a lot of trouble keeping his throat clear. I understand this is something that's been bothering him for at least a couple of weeks.

I wish him a speedy recovery. I didn't think he sounded too good on the radio the other day. Just an odd coincidence. That's the hospital I went to when I broke my arm back in November. I'm sure they'll take good care of him.

I had the great fortune of joining Marty and Joe in Palm Springs on a golf weekend a few months ago. Actually, there was a group of more than a dozen and Joe was not in my foursome (I played with Marty and a couple of the Montgomery Inn boys -- that was a hoot, but is deserving of its own thread...!). But I did get to spend some time with Nuxie at dinner the night before and then for a couple of cold ones after the round. I'll tell you this: The man loves life and loves to laugh. Never passes on a chance to insert a joke. And loud. It's that kind of attitude that keeps a clock ticking, so I hope he's thinking of a few whoppers while he is resting.

Joe is the Reds to many folks. I had the wonderful opportunity of spending a lot of time with him at Reds fantasy camp a few years back. What a great guy. He made over my son, and had a twinkle in his eye when the little lefthander wound up and threw him a ball at 3 years old. He looked at Jim O'Toole and said, "That youngster has a future." That's my hospital as well, even tho' I live in Hamilton, my primary care physician is in Springdale.

It just happened to be the closest one at the moment, given that we only live three miles away. I had the surgery at Good Samaritan. Sorry for getting a wee bit off topic there. I hope Joe gets better soon. It's hard as a fan to see one of your childhood icons getting old and feeble.

Yes it is. Double pneumonia is nasty, especially at his age. When, years from now, Marty and Joe won't be with us anymore, a part of me will be gone as well. I grew up with those guys.

Nuxhall to stay in hospital awhile
Former Reds pitcher, broadcaster treated for cancer, pneumonia.

FAIRFIELD — Cincinnati Reds legend Joe Nuxhall will stay in the hospital for a few more days as doctors continue treatment for double pneumonia and cancer, his son said Wednesday.

Nuxhall was admitted to Mercy Fairfield Hospital on Tuesday after he had trouble breathing for almost a week.

His son, Kim Nuxhall, said he isn't certain if the cancer that doctors found on his father's tonsils is related to two earlier bouts of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

The former Cincinnati Reds pitcher and broadcaster had been scheduled to start radiation treatment on the lump Tuesday, his son said.

"They are giving him radiation of that area, which is good because they were afraid they weren't going to be able to," his son said.

He said his father is eager to go home. Still, after the 77-year-old was admitted to the hospital, Kim Nuxhall said he was worried about his father's health.

"With double pneumonia at 77, there are some risks," he said. "But there was nothing critical within that (first) 24-hour period. And no nurse or doctor gave us that impression either.

"He should have been in there a week ago," his son added. "He's been fighting this and he finally realized he should be in there."

Mercy Fairfield spokesman Greg Ossmann said Nuxhall was in stable condition Wednesday.

Nuxhall made history in 1944, when, at age 15, he became the youngest player to appear in a major-league game.

Depending on his health, Nuxhall is scheduled to celebrate his first pitch in the major leagues on June 10 at Great American Ball Park by accepting a $20,000 check for the Joe Nuxhall Character Education Fund.

The 5 p.m. ceremony will be held outside the park near Nuxhall's statue. After the ceremony, Joe Nuxhall and Greg Hoard are scheduled to be at the Reds Community Foundation booth signing Hoard's book, Joe: Rounding Third and Heading for Home.
