The first of hopefully many moves over the coming weeks and months to shore up this disaster of a 'pen.

Rats! :(

They evidently think that White needs more time to adjust and improve now that he's not making the trip down from Springfield every day.

i thought i read that shackleford didn't have any optionsthat's how he got to AAA after ST. The option is good for the entire year.

BTW, there was no chance White was going to be the odd man out and I said that last night. I don't think the FO has confidence than Yan is actually better than White so they are in a wait and see mode and can bring in Yan and not actually lose replacement level White.

with mercker off the dl yes i kno white is very bad but 3 lefties is one two many especially the way hammond's been pitching

Likewise from a financial standpoint, if you have two pitchers who are equally weak, do you really jettison the one who you're going to have to pay or the one who is probably on a split contract (and has the options)?

That's not to say White might not get the boot some other time, but right now, this one was a no-brainer.

Mercker and Hammond have not been very effective this year against lefties at all. Shack has been pretty strong in that capacity.

Great, I guess Mercker's latest performances made Shack expendable. So, now who do you bring into get a tough lefty out? Not walk, or give up a homerun to, but out?

Mercker and Hammond have not been very effective this year against lefties at all. Shack has been pretty strong in that capacity.although a point others have made is that the Reds really don't have enough quality relievers to make proper use of a LOOGY.

Very true. White is an absolute disaster and he brings nothing to the table. Shack can get lefties out and White can get no one out. The bullpen just got a lot worse.

so im assuming reading marcs blog that this is the only move for today

Sending Shackelford down is a start but we still have Rick White on the roster. Plus Mercker has been horrible since coming off the DL so the Reds still have a long way to go.

Shack was definitley having a good year against the lefties and there is no way we want the game on the line with Esteban facing a lefty. Maybe he can be a ROOGY. :)

In addition, you have to have a manager willing to use them in the proper manner (like Larussa) but Narron has shown little feel for using multiple relievers to get through an inning without there being any trouble.

Holy CRAP Merker is sucking it up against lefties...

White against righties might be the 2nd funniest stat line ever. 1st place goes the 2006 version of Mike Burns vs. righties (19 hits in 35 ABs) and a 1.286 OPS.

Hammond and now Yan have pretty sick numbers against RH, Mercker hasn't bounced back, White is a waste of roster space, and Shack has DOMINATED LH hitters.

Yeah, keeping White over Shack makes a ton of sense.

As far as Hammond's stats against lefties goes, I wonder how many of those hits were during the first two week stretch when he was getting rocked? He has been pretty much lights out since and I think he is one of the more effective relievers on the roster at this point.

Mercker's guaranteed $1.55 million. Shack isn't. And this is Brian's third and final option year, if I'm not mistaken.

The Reds just put him on the 40 man last year, was he on someone else's 40 man before?

You can pretty much drop the last two words on that sentence.

Most of the pen needs to go, but with nobody to replace them it's not worth the effort.

Yan?

Say! NOW with shack gone, the winning can begin anew! CLEARLY he was the problem!
