I know this is a point of contention in RZ Land, but I continue to think that Freel's greatest value is as a super sub playing all over the place. Not to start anything.

On top of what redsmetz said, Freel had his chance when Griffey went on the DL and he was fine for a week or so then it really fell off for him. He had his chance and has no one but himself to blame.

Berkman vs. Harang.....4-22 with 4 dingers.
Seems like anything but the long ball pitch works on Lance

Pretty modest performance against him all in all.

Only 24 ab's against Wandy for the Reds, Griff 2/3 with 2 walks.

Remember, when he took over for Griffey during Junior's injury, Freel's performance suffered as he played more.

Sorry, didn't clarify. Wasn't talking about that at bat, more about his general approach. (the sb and subsequent move to third is what sparked my comment)
I know he can hit, but he won't last long in this league if he can't make the pitchers throw strikes. His defense and baserunning are plus plus....this kid could be very very good if he adjusts.

No problem. :)

In his second plate appearance, he saw six pitches--four of them strikes--and grounded out on a 2-2 count.

I know it's a small sample, but tonight he seems to be doing what you are hoping for--seeing a lot of pitches, and making the pitcher throw strikes. (9 pitches, 7 strikes) :)

Great battle there between Harang and Berkman. Aaron kept trying to bury the ball in on Berkman's hands, Lance fouled off a few. Then Harang wasted one low and followed it up with another pitch on the inner edge of the strikezone and right on top of Berkman's hands. Aaron changed his perspective with the waste pitch just enough to beat him back in the spot where he wanted to throw it.

100 pitches through 5 1/3 for Aaron. That's a ton of bullpen outs we're asking for.

The Astros made him work, but unless Berkman hits two grannies in the next three innings, I don't see Houston making this a game.

I have not seen the whole game but the last few innings Harang is cruising. Of course it helps to have a 9 run lead but he is going through the Astros lineup with ease.

The sad part is that Larue is the kind of hitter who needs to work out of slumps. He won't get better sitting on the bench. Truthfully, he's not used to sitting as much as he has this season ... I think that's part of the problem. Catch-22 ... he has to play to get better, but if he doesn't get better we won't want to play him. Also we can't trade him easily if he doesn't get better. Oh well, at least he picked a good game to go 0-for-5 and strand 6 runners...we didn't really need it.

At this point, Ross should be handed the job, or at least over 1/2 of the catching duties + more consideration pinch hitting. I'm not completely sold on him but LaRue has been doing absolute horribly lately and Ross definately has more ceiling. I say try him in there as much as possible (still letting the pitchers who like to work with LaRue have him). If this guy fizzles then alright, he's the same caliber as LaRue but if he does pretty well then give him the job by all means. It will be tough to unload LaRue as cold as he's been though and that fat contract doesn't help.

Have to disagree, LaRue has been one of the better catchers in baseball for the last 3 + years, giving him a 2 year deal when the team has very little in the minors as far as catchers who can actually hit wasn't a bad move, now, not moving Valentin was.

Yan is what you would call maximum effort. He was just chucking heat in there and those judy 'stros hitters were hacking away. This bullpen desperately cried for another power arm, so maybe with the volatility of relievers, we can ride an uptick, but he obviously has a smidge of a command issue.
