Baseball's Mount Rushmore

MLB.com was recently asking current players if Major League Baseball had a Mount Rushmore, what four players faces would they have carved into it?

I'm going to go with:

Babe Ruth
Jackie Robinson
Walter Johnson
Ty Cobb


Thoughts? What four players would you put on baseball's Mount Rushmore?

I'd probably replace Johnson with Cy Young and possbily Robinson with Aaron. Ruth and Cobb sound good to me.

I toyed with that thought, but even though Young has the gawdy win numbers, I think Johnson was the better pitcher.

Too many people would see Cy Young and Walter Johnson and say "who the heck are those guys?" (Not me of course.)

So I'm going with Cal Ripken. And I guess I have to pick a pitcher, so I will take Cy Young.

I think Willie Mays or Hank Aaron would be there before Cal Ripken, and that isn't a knock on Cal at all.

Ripken is one of the most overrated players in the history of the game IMO. He had a few great years mixed in between a mostly average to good years. Plust the playing streak is the most selfish record in the game.

I'm going to cheat ... just to spice things up, of course. Here's a Mt. Rushmore for every position on the diamond, including three Mt. Rushmores for pitchers, and another Mt. Rushmore each for managers and baseball pioneers. What the heck? This is for fun, right? :)

I like this type of list, but no way should pizza boy be in the catchers list. He was nothing more then a glorified softball player who could hit the long ball, but as a catcher he was horrible. Putting him among those other catchers is an injustice and insult to those catchers. Now if you want a list of guys who could hit and not much else in the game., yeha, piazza may belong on that list.

Ted Williams- .400 hitter
Jackie Robinson- groundbreaking player, for obvious and well-deserved reasons
Hank Aaron- Home Run King
Cy Young- best pitcher in baseball given his award

I am likely to get bashed or called names, but I dont think Robinson deserves this honor-he gets enough credit on other forms of recognition I think. This should be about play on the field only IMO, and I dont think he ever did enough between the lines to be one of 4 faces all time for his play only.

The "old one" with traditioanl Ruths etc can be "the face of baseball greats", while the "new one" with Bonds can be the "giant head of baseball's donkeys".
