Gives him a breather against a nasty right-hander. If you are going to give him a game off, this isn't a terrible one to pick...

Carpenter vs. Milton = no chance.

That said, the Reds have often done very well in games like this.

Milty can fall off at any time, but color me as optimistic about him as I've been in 13 months if he throws out a quality start tonight. His location and velocity have been much better all year, with 1.5 game exception. His era minus that blowup start is well under three. I'm optimistic, but realize he's a bottle of nitro out there at all times.

By the way, Jason LaRue? Let's hope a trade is announced soon.

Freel's had better success against Carpenter than Kearns. Dunn hasn't done much against the guy either, but he hits from the left side.

I don't get why you sit EE yesterday, but you play him today.

Seems to me you would want a "vet" like Rich in against a guy liek Carpenter. EE would have hammered aroudn Suppan yesterday. I'm not complaining that EE is in today (he should always play over RA) but if you were going to sit him in this series today would have been today.

Nah. Kearns is a junkball mistake-pitch hitter (Carpenter doesn't throw many of these); and Freel can turn high choppers into basehits.

Using Freel optimizes the lineup IMO. Realistically, though, both Kearns and Freel should be in the lineup every day no matter what.

I have a hunch the boys will rake Carpenter tonight.

If Milton can hold 'em to less than five runs, they'll win handily.

My thinking is that it's always best to catch a good pitcher on his first start back from an injury. They'll be keeping a close eye on him, and he won't likely pitch deep into the game, thus exposing a tired Cards pen.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Same for me. It's entertaining to sometimes start with the thread rather than the box score -- even more fun if you don't know who actually won (hard to do with the scores updated in the thread title now)

This quote makes me wonder if Carpenter is coming back from the DL before hes 100%:

After throwing a bullpen session last week, he said he was ready to go.

"I threw everything, all of my pitches," Carpenter said. "It was longer, and I definitely felt good. As long as tomorrow there's nothing affecting me, no soreness, nothing like that, I'll be fine."

How about having your toe nails pulled?

Seriously, yes Carpenter is better than Milton, but not as much as you think so far this year. Especially his first game back from an injury. This isn't the 2005 version of either Milton or Carpenter.

And in the fact that our lineup is much, much better than what they are trotting out, and this is not an unwinnable game by any means.

Milton cost himself another run by not getting that bunt down.

It baffles me how guys that play baseball for a living can't do one of the most fundamental things in their profession. I don't expect them to lay down the bunt everytime, no one does, but 7 out of 10 from a professional should be expected.

To be fair, it's not easy to drop down a bunt against a 96 mph fastball or hammer curveball from a Cy Young winner.

Bad baserunning leads to an EE injury.

After looking at the replay, he rounded 2nd, and attempted to turn all the way around to find the ball instead of looking at his 3rd base coach.

It looked more like Mark Berry made an "error". He signaled Jr to go and then stopped him abruptly... in the meantime, EE was only about 10 feet from third base. He twisted an ankle or pulled something when he turned around to go back to second.

If Encarnacion is out for a while, I would look for a combination of Aurilia and Freel at 3B.
