Rumor has it that the Indians will "cut loose" Scott Sauerbeck today at some point. Sauerbeck is having a little bit of a rough season with a high ERA and some off the field issues, but he was a pretty solid lefty specialist recently. Would anyone want to take a chance on this Cincinnati native? I know we don't really need another lefty, but depth is not a bad thing. Perhaps he would take a minor league deal with his hometown team.

I'd give him a miner league deal maybe and put him in Louisville but not up here yet.Reds already have enough guys in the pen with the same problems he has.

No way, him and his lady friend drove drunk, then ran away from the police, trying to evade arrest. Eventually they were found and taken in, he said he was sorry in a press conference to try and save face, but everyone in Cleveland boos him now. I'd prefer one team in Cincy not sign absolute scumbags just to get a few more victories. We already have the Bengals for that.

...scuzziness aside, With Merker, Hammond and Shackleford in the organization does this organization need a lefty with a career whip of 1.5 and an ERA over 6?

FWIW he's a local boy. Did his school time in Oxford as well. The reds seem to have gotten away from working that angle all the time, but you never know.

...That sounds a lot like a lefthanded version of Rick White.

Now, if the guy is free and wants to go to Louisville and get himself right with the mound again, I think there's a place for him.

Reds have enough pitchers like SS. If they add to the bullpen it should be a power arm. Yan is a good addition for that reason.

Reds don't really have an open slot because Belisle will be back and probably replace White. Mays (or someone like him) is necessary for long stints. So I don't see who you drop to get Sauerbeck.

Pass, unless SS wants to pitch for Louisville waiting for an injury.

By the way, vague memory alert, I think it was Sauerbeck who taught Bronson Arroyo how to throw his curveball sidearm.

No, no I am sorry to point out that you are wrong on this one. Bronson learned that from the Devil as he was selling his soul for a Cy Young.

Another bullpen arm just became available. Texas just DFA'd Antonio Alfonseca. Would you guys have any interest in him?

I was just thinking about a trade that could help our bullpen. Here it is:

Wagner and Olmedo to the M's for Rafael Soriano

Soriano is still young, throws hard, and would be a great setup man for Coffey. Here's another deal that could boost the pen:

LaRue to the Rockies for Ray King

I don't want to trade LaRue, and I'm in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" crowd with regards to the 3 catcher situation, but I think its best for Jason if he goes to a place where he could get PT. King would be a nice addition to the bullpen.

If we make those two trades, I think our 'pen will be in good shape.

Buster Olney talked about the Reds going out and getting some bullpen help. He mentioned Roberto Hernandez of the Pirates and Joe Borowski of the Marlins as possible condidates. He also said Scott Elarton and Gil Meche would be possibilities as starters.

I like the Ray King idea, too. However, I'm a little concerned about his increasing BAA and WHIP the last 2 years. Also he has only struck out 3 batters in 16 IP this year, while walking 6. If we're going to get a reliever, he would be a good pitcher to take a gamble on, though, given his career numbers.

Hernandez would be a an excellent acquistion despite being ancient. The Pirates wouldn't be asking for the moon and you might be able to get him for Ryan Wagner.

And the way Weathers has been performing, this team is desperate for righthanded relievers. If we have to depend on Yan late in the game in order to get to Coffey, we are in some serious trouble.

I'd prefer not to go after Borowski or Elarton. Probably not Hernandez, but I could live with him, he at least has a live arm. Meche though, I am very intrigued by and have been for a few years. When he's on, he's on. And I always thought he could be an absolute lights out closer, though I am sure he's making "just enough" to not move him to the pen since salary usually precedes results or ideas. But he'd definitely be an upgrade for the rotation and that's where it all starts anyway.

Kansas city Royals Acquired pitcher Brandon Duckworth from the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations; designated pitcher Kyle Snyder for assignment.

Would Snyder and or Erickson be worth a look at this point? I think I would take a chance.

Erickson signs minor-league deal with Yankees

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. -- Scott Erickson agreed Thursday to a minor league contract with the New York Yankees, giving the team another backup in case of pitching breakdowns.

Erickson

The 38-year-old right-hander threw for 10 minutes off a mound Thursday at the minor league complex while manager Joe Torre watched along with coaches Ron Guidry and Joe Kerrigan and vice president Billy Connors. The Yankees gave Erickson the tryout at the suggestion of Jason Giambi.

"He threw the ball pretty well," Guidry said. "He said he's been throwing since Thanksgiving."

Erickson was 1-4 with a 6.02 ERA in eight starts and 11 relief appearances last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who cut him in late July. He also has pitched for Minnesota, Baltimore, the New York Mets and Texas, going 142-136 with a 4.57 ERA in 14 seasons.

His deal calls for a $15,000 monthly salary at Triple-A and if added to the 40-man roster would get a $550,000, one-year contract. He must pass a physical Friday for the deal to be finalized.

"We will need choices, you always do," general manager Brian Cashman said. "It's somewhat of an insurance policy. He's also prepared to go to Triple-A."

It appears that his contract is reasonable. Do we want to take a chance on him? It looks like a low risk to try.

I think Duckworth is too much like the guys we already have. He's been in the majors 5 years and his WHIP has gone up every year. Outside of having a decent career K/9 ratio, I don't see anything special about him at all. He was horrendous in his time in Houston, and most fans there couldn't wait until the team dropped him. I'd pass. I just don't think he's the answer.

 Just looked at Erickson's stats and I'd say stay far, far away from him. Outside of his first couple of full years with the Twins and a couple of solid years in Baltimore in the late 90's, he's an ERA of 6 or 7 and a WHIP of 1.5 - 2 and we've got all we need of them! Since 2000, he's been just plain crappy.

I could see the Reds having interest in Scott Williamson if he comes back healthy for the CUbs. He is currently on the DL, they feared it was in relation ot his elbow, but it was simply tendonitis and he should be back in a few days. Not even taking a rehab stint. If he can prove he is healthy he could be a good pickup.

Doesn't seem like there is a spot for Denorfia, would you trade him for Williamson?

Sauerbeck was released by the Indians this morning.

He's at least worth a minor-league deal to see if he's got anything left.
