He could have pitched yesterday when it really mattered.
But since hes a closer he cant pitch anything other than the 9th.
That isn't the problem. The problem is that he is the only reliable arm in the bullpen and that the bullpen doesn't stop at letting up one run. They are not satisfied until they blow a gaping hole in the game. Coffey cannot be brought in at the first sign of trouble, or else he will throw 150 innings. Then, if he is needed in the 9th, people will complain b/c Double Zero had to be used. Wayne has to make a move. That's what it comes down to. And the move cannot be him picking up someone else's trash.

Wasn't there a thread the other day saying Coffey needed to be used less?Coffey probably has more value in a setup role because 1) he will pitch more innings 2)all moving him into the closer role does is move a problem elsewhere.
What Coffey really needs is help.

That all depends on who they put in to close.

I really hope you weren't one of the people calling for Coffey to close, and if you weren't then you were in the minority.

I don't think as shutdown closer is needed, just a guy who won't explode, without a good pen we won't have any chances to use a shutdown closer.

That all depends on who they put in to close.blowing the lead or letting a game get out of control in the 7th or 8th is every bit as damaging as it happening in the 9th. Like a said last night the modern role of closer is a role that defies a logical expanantion.

I really hope you weren't one of the people calling for Coffey to close, and if you weren't then you were in the minority. My point on Coffey has always been that he needs help. Now he is the closer but this team has little ability to bridge the gap between starter and closer and the modern role of closer means Coffey will likely be pitching less because his days of 2 inning stints and pitching in tie games will be over.

Blow the game in the 7th and your team gets up 2 or 3 more times. Blow it in the 9th and it's curtains. If the team had better relievers then this wouldn't even be an argument. You cannot use your best guy at the first sign of trouble. He'll be pitching every game. Hindsight is 20/20 and it obviously would have been worth it yesterday. But let's not pull the trigger on this guy every game. He'll end up in Kremchek's office before long.

We have a shutdown closer. We need guys with ERAs in the 4s to pitch in the middle innings. This BP is not satisfied until they let up 4 or 5 runs.

Signing up for the modern role of closer ensures that on many days that will not happen.

I expect some real bellyaching over all this series from Reds fans, and surely the bullpen and the offense were beyond lame this series. But really, the starting pitching was encouraging, the Reds were more than overdue to suffer some tough losses, and I don't think the way they played these last few days is any more indicative of the potential quality of the rest of their season than some of the more bizarre wins they've had.
It's just tough...so tough...to lost to the evil, evil Cubs :bang:

Wow. I think we need to trade him while he has any sort of value left. For his benefit, and ours.

Yep I agree. We need to bring someone up from the Noog. I have read that Wayne and Bob have been down there lately.

Salmon is doing pretty good in AAA, but I think they would have to make a 40 man roster move to get him up here.

DFA Q!
Actaully you could just transfer Wilson to the 60 day DL.
I want to see Shafer from AA come up.

Any other team would probably bring Shafer up from AA, the Reds will likely make him go to AAA for a while before he makes it to the majors.

I think it might be time to make a decision on Denorfia. Either replace Q with him or start shopping him to teams in need of OF help (Yankees, Minny, etc)or looking towards the future (Florida, Pitt, Seattle, etc). Q is as useless as they come and he is doing more harm than the good that Deno is getting in AAA.

I can see it now: the Reds cut loose Wagner, Houston picks him up for a song, converts him to some all-universe closer who routinely whips the snot out of the Reds. There have already been scripts written for this one.
PLenty of people here said it was a HUGE mistake to call up Wagner as early as they did. He should have spent at least one year in the minors. There's no way to know for certain if this would have made a difference, but I can't imagine a scenario where getting a guy to the majors as quickly as Wagner is a good idea.
