This losing streak may reach double digits. If you can't beat the Brewers with Harang and Arroyo pitching, well, you probably aren't going to beta them with Ramirez pitching. Then the White Sox and their great rotation comes to town to face the Milton, Claussen, and Harang. Then off to Shea Stadium to face the best team in the NL.

MWM
06-13-2006, 09:05 PM
I know this was never a playoff team and that it's all about talent on the roster, but this team is lacking something intangible. As soon as they start to play well and get into first place, they fall apart and really start to press and beat themselves. You can almost see them freeze up a little once things are going really well.

Usually it gases pitchers, you probably didn't know that since you are too busy making smart aleck comments.

Arroyo's not one of those fat out of shape pitchers who need that rest after walking back to the dugout. Its probably also a reason why he can pitch much deeper into games as well.

As long as the bullpen doesn't have to pitch too many innings then Arroyo can probably go one more with Hammond and Coffey closing it out.

That's absurd. Final tally is 127 pitches. :bang:

That's assuming that Narron doesn't run him out there again in the 8th inning.

Lousy bullpen and a 1-2-3 inning notwithstanding, that was still a horrible decision to run Arroyo out there for the 7th, especially since the inning was coming on the heels of a high-stress 6th inning. What compounded the issue further was letting him bat the previous inning with a basestealing threat who could (and did) get himself into scoring position during Arroyo's plate appearance.

Thou shall protect thy pitchers, Narron, especially the few quality guys that we've got. Arroyo's arm is worth more than gold to this entire organization right now; let's not harm it.

But isn't this a situation where the pitcher, manager, and pitching coach all confer in the dugout and make that decision as to the pitcher's condition?

I really don't see where it was that detrimetal of a decision.

Good use of bullpen by Yost. Lead off guy on second. Lefty reliever gets out lefty batters. Righty reliever gets out RA.

Narron could have used Freel or Larue against lefty; Valentin or Lopez against righty. But he didn't.

Meanwhile, the Reds continue time after time after time to fail to knock in the man in scoring position.

The combination of high-stress innings (high pitch count innings) and a cumalative high total pitch count contributes heavily to damaging a pitcher's arm. Arroyo most definitely had some high-stress innings tonight, and allowing him to throw 127 pitches in the same game as those high-stress innings on the heels of allowing him to bat in the 6th inning with a runner on base is ridiculous.

BTW, Retrosheet has recorded the actual pitch count totals for Sandy Koufax from 1961-1964. Take a guess on his average pitch count he had for those four seasons.

Coming into tonight, Arroyo had faced exactly two batters with his pitch count at 121 pitches or higher. Given the high stress innings he pitched tonight, it wouldn't surprise me if tonight's start taxed his arm more than any other start in his career. There is no way in the world I'm in favor of allowing Arroyo go enter the 121+ territory. None at all.
