Which current Reds players will be on this team 5 years from now?

It's always easy to think the "core players" (who ever you define them to be) will be around a while but then trades, injuries, implosions, finances, age and general life happens and changes everything.

Coffey (possibly but doubt it)
Ross (possibly but doubt it)

This is hard to speculate on, but I would agree w/ your assesment, EE, Phillips are the only fielders, kearns/ dunn are a doubtful to maybe.

A good way to gauge this is to look and see who is still here from five years ago:

LaRue, Griffey and Dunn.

Arroyo- I think if we win he'll put roots down here, if not he takes a hometown discount to go back to Boston when contract is up

For some of the omissions
Dunn- prices himself out of Cincy
Griffey- retires in 4 years
Freel- wears himself out playing the way he does
Catchers- such a demanding position its never a good bet to project them to stay long-term
BP- Hope I'm wrong but I think this is his Pokey Reese career year
Bullpen- besides Coffey all these guys are retreads and won't be here in 2 years, let alone 5
Rotation- Hopefully Claussen can find his form from last year when he gets off the DL but Milton won't be resigned with Homer coming up from the minors in '08

I think Griffey will be in his last year in the majors in five years, and still with the Reds. Hopefully playing first.
Edwin will still be around.
Kearns will be.
Harang
Arroyo but only as stated above, if we win, he stays, if we don't he bolts.
And I could still possibly see Ross here as well.

1. 1995-Jason LaRue (5th Rd pick).....12th season.

2. 1998-Austin Kearns (1st Rd), Adam Dunn (2nd Rd), Josh Hall (7th Rd), Todd Coffey (41st Rd).....9th season.

3. 1999-Brad Salmon (21st Rd), Edward Valdez (UFA), Will Bergolla (UFA), Ray Olmedo (UFA), Carlos Bohoquez (UFA) .....8th season.

4. 2000-Dane Sardinha (2nd Rd), Ken Griffey, Jr. (trade), Habelito Hernandez (UFA), Tonys Gutierrez (UFA), Miguel Perez (UFA), Rafael Matooka (UFA), Gary Patchett (UFA).....7th season.

5. 2001-Steve Kelly (4th Rd), Jeff Bannon (18th Rd), Jesse Gutierrez (20th Rd), David Shafer (32nd Rd), Edwin Encarnacion (trade).....6th season

Dunn had better be here in 5 years! If Dunn is playing for another major-league because the Reds refused to raise payroll enough to keep him, I may not watch or listen to a Reds game for the next five years. I hope the current ownership will raise payroll to at least that of an average team, and not make the mistakes Lindner and company made.

I would agree if we were talking about a perennial all-star, but Adam Dunn isn't that. Not even close. His skills and work ethic make him a perfect DH candidate. I doubt he'll be with the the Reds three years from now. My guess is he'll be with the Texas Rangers.

I agree with you here. I think EE, Harang, Phillips and Coffey will still be here. I'd also throw in Ramirez. And that's about it.

I doubt Lopez will still be here. He'll cost too much.

And there's no way Dunn will still be here. He's due to make $13 million in 2008. He'll probably be gone by then, if not by then, shortly after when he'll probably make more than that. No way the Reds can afford him for too much longer.

I can't believe we are not seeing Kearns more on ALOT of these lists. I truly believe that he just may be a Red for his whole career. Krivsky and ownership I think are going to base this not only on Kearns' performance but also because he is from and grew up nearby in Lexington.
