If you're bullpen is gonna struggle anyway, do it with younger guys that might have at least some kind of future. This bullpen needs a turnover of at least three arms by the time they return from the all-star break. Krivsky needs to deal for at least one fresh arm pronto.

The guy taking the mound right now (Dessens) might not be a cure-all, but could be a starting point.

If pitchers can't go beyond 100 pitches then they're wussies, plain and simple. I remember there used to be a time when pitch counts were hardly thought of. If a pitcher is well conditioned then they should be able to go beyond that so called magic 100. That's why they go every 5 days. Managers worry themselves way too much about pitch counts.

Times are a lot different. We now have 12 year old kids throwing breaking balls on regular basis and 18 year olds having Tommy John surgery. Pitchers nowadays are also throwing at a higher rate of speed than they did in the old days. With arm and shoulder injuries so common these days, you have to protect your pitchers.

Having said that though, I did not realize Arroyo was only at 108, I thought he was up around 120. I think he could have started another inning.

Pitchers nowadays are also throwing at a higher rate of speed than they did in the old days. With arm and shoulder injuries so common these days, you have to protect your pitchers.

Having said that though, I did not realize Arroyo was only at 108, I thought he was up around 120. I think he could have started another inning.

its a long season and narron was probably trying to save a little wear and tear on bronson's arm. of course, if this bullpen continues pitching as poorly as it has been all year long it really is not gonna matter much how fresh arroyo's arm is in the second half of the season. the simple fact is the bullpen needs to be reworked. the sooner the better.

Times are a lot different. We now have 12 year old kids throwing breaking balls on regular basis and 18 year olds having Tommy John surgery. We weren't allowed to throw breaking pitches until High School ball in my leagues. If we did, the pitchers were removed from the game and if it continued the game would be forfeited.

We win, but this shouldn't let the bullpen off the hook. Who got the win? Did Weathers end up with a win out of it? LOL

Weathers, somehow :bang:

With an average bullpen the Reds would have a good grasp on first.

I wasn't when I played either, but that was back in the early 80's. My dad forbid me to even think about throwing a breaking ball until I got into high school. Today, you see them throwing them in Little League.

seriously? I thought the official scorer didn't have to award the win if the pitcher came in and was terrible.

Along with Weathers picking up the W, Hammond gets credited with a Hold. The bullpen can't be that bad, they picked up a win, a hold and a save after all ;)

They are showing it on Yahoo as a win for Weathers

from a message perspective I really hope they make a move tomorrow with hammond or weathers. i get the feeling the guys upstairs feel like they owe the veterans a longer leash, but hammond is clearly d-o-n-e. he had a stretch at the end of may/early june where he pitched well but i am of the opinion that it was more missing bats than good pitching. i think a move would send a message about complacency and expectations. blowing a three run lead to the royals should be unacceptable - win or loss.

I realize that Hammond was not exactly at his best tonight, but he did get the double play ball that Lopez messed up that would have kept a Reds lead going into the 9th.

I just feel like teams are sitting on that 65 mph breaking pitch and just crushing it. he is guaranteed to throw it once an at bat and it seems like guys are seeing it and hitting it.

I think the defense is atrocious but at least lopez and ee (when in the lineup) make up for it at the plate.

when it comes to the veterans I can stomach rich arilleo (Ron Santo pronounciation) in the four hole, but I am tired of seeing the same ole tired arms run out there in the 7th and 8th. both the post and enquirer indicated that the change had been made on set up roles - to standridge and belisle, but jerry must not read the paper.

Can't argue with you there. Hammond has to have his location down or he will get shelled. He did get the double play ball though, too bad it was after the first two hitters hit him quite hard.
