and at least a lefty is going with Richie still in that 4 slot

Now that I think about it why is Valentin in there? He caught yesterday & sucks against LHP.. I would at least expect LaRue.

Maybe there is a trade imminent and they want Ross to catch tomorrow?

I like Freel playing when Lopez doesn't. Still gives us the speed factor at the top.

JV against a lefty is like having pitchers hit in the 8th and 9th slots. Not sure what Narron is thinking there.

I have a feeling that the bullpen will be in motion early on this one. Mays is ready for one of those games. Hopefully the lineup and BP will be up for it tonight.

If you are going to rest Lopez, this would be the likley day to do it.

Why Valentin is in there is anyone's guess. He should never start against a LH pitcher.

FWIW, the reasons why the Reds aren't getting the respect they have earned is because of reasons like Mays and the bullpen. Until these holes are fixed ture respect will not be acheived unless they are in this thing in late August.

Mays was skipped in the rotation. He hasn't pitched in, what, about nine or ten days. He is the type of pitcher who needs to be sharp and is probably suffering from the layoff.

The guy is obviously a marginal pitcher, but I wouldn't throw him overboard quite yet. He would be ok as a long man in the bullpen.

The Reds have a few very good pitchers this year, but the depth of good pitching is still not there. Until it is, guys like Mays will fill out the roster. Don't give up on him too fast, the replacement could be worse.

What truth would that be?

Narron was just quoted in the Cincy Post as saying he would be "shocked" if the third baseman isn't back before the All-Star break.

Why? I thought game thread was for game, and game related chatter. Aurilia's continued fixture in the line-up at clean-up is an irritant. EE's exile to the minors is an irritant. So, it gets mentioned. Why does it have to be contained?

Do I need to turn all my irritation to Joe Mays? Because I would rather not have to contemplate him too closely.

When you get Adam Dunn to a 2-strike count, you can pretty much strike him out at will by throwing a breaking ball low and away.
