I wonder what Cast thinks of Grande's inappropriate love for non-Reds. I can accept a lot of George's quirks, but cheering for the other team or particular players is not acceptable. Maybe he can be "encouraged" to retire.

Ross DP ends the threat. Apparently not the Reds' day.

Narron took out his frustration with his own borderline retarded decision making on the first base ump. Hope it made him feel better. I, for one, am still marveling that he thought Weathers was an acceptable option against the middle of Indians lineup in a tie game.

Then Belisle settles down and uses his obviously nasty stuff to quickly dispatch the Indians. It is clear to anyone with eyes that work and a brain that is not flat-lined that Weather brings to the mound stuff that is chiefly characterized by the room service straight fastballs that scream "hit me hard and far". At least Belisle can miss the occasional bat.

Kc61
07-02-2006, 05:09 PM
Anyone who thinks Belisle is the answer hasn't been watching. He has not shown the consistency to pitch in the late innings. He has some pop on the fastball, but can't get guys out regularly. Right now, he is not a starter or a late inning reliever.

There really is no good choice in this pen. They need two late innings relievers to go with Coffey. All the rest of these guys are middle innings fill-in types, including Belisle.

Why is Juan Castro hitting?

Because he is hitting now. In about two weeks when he's 0-28, he'll still be in there and Narron will reference the last few games as evidence that his veteran presence and clutch hitting is why he's playing. In the meantime EdE rots on the bench.

Get used to it. WE've got two more years of it.

Only the Reds could find a way to lose two straight games to a horrible team after a momentum building win on Friday night. 29 other major league teams most likely go on a nice little win streak, but not the Reds.

MWM
07-02-2006, 05:25 PM
I think putting in Griffey there was a no brainer. A HR ties the game and you're much more likely to get it from Junior than BP. I think it was the right play there.

As far as Weathers, I'm somewhat in the camp that believes there's really no good option out of the pen, so Weathers is as good as the next guy, but right now he's really struggling more than anyone else, so I think he should be the last option at this time while he seems to be the first. But when you have the Reds bully, it's hard to fault the manager too much with who he brings in.

Agree on the second part 100%. Would have ph Griffey in the 9 spot vs Valentin though. Probably still turns out the same, but I don't like the idea of having to use Griffey in place of the teams hottest hitter.

I wouldn't hold my breath. Castro is "clutch" nowadays and you have to make a place for him. I imagine the debate in Jerry's mind is whether or not to bring him up. Apparently Krivsky listens to him.

Marc D
07-02-2006, 05:34 PM
I'm done blaming Narron for anything that happens from the pen. He only has 1 legit MLB pitcher at his disposal.

That said, Q tip as the first PH then using Valentin instead of JR in the P spot, c'mon.

Ultimately it doesn't matter and this L is on the pen but his lineups and constant misuse of his bench is worrisome.

My money says that once Kriv fixes the talent gap, Bob Milarron will still be flirting with .500.

Was Griffey perhaps wanting to steal some of Dunn's thunder?
[/conspiracy theory]

I was out today and just caught the eighth and the ninth. From what I saw...the game wasn't lost in the ninth.

When I saw the pitching matchups I thought we were in for a sweep. We took one...however its always a shame to lose when you get a decent line from Milton.

Yep I agree. I am not going to lose any sleep over this series loss. It looked like when from the get go.

While I agree 100% the problem is we are essentially forfeting 40% of our starts as long as we get the Mays/Milton/pen/defense jumble 2 out of every 5 games.

This then puts unreal pressure on Arroyo, Harang and EZ. They now have to pitch deep into every game to avoid the pen and we have to win almost every start to stay above .500.

Any mistep, or god forbid injury, to the 3 real starters we have and its over in a big way.

In a playoff series the #4 and #5 starters don't matter but to win enough games to get to a playoff series we need at least 1 more decent starter and 2 decent arms in the pen. With so many other teams after the same thing, I just don't see how you make that big a haul mid season.

I'm as critical as anyone else of Narron, but we cannot blame him for the pinch-hitting blunders in the 9th (PH'ing Javy for the pitcher's spot instead of JR, then PH'ing JR for the hot-hitting Phillips; in essence, trading Brandon's bat for that of Valentin in the 9th - moronic). Why?

Narron wasn't in the dugout. He was tossed earlier. Bench coach can claim responsibility for the wonderfully mismanaged bottom of the 9th.

Ltlabner
07-02-2006, 06:35 PM
I just got home from GABP. And some observations in no particular order.

1) Why does Narron insist on letting Weathers "pitch through his problems" or whatever gibberish he uses to justify going to him yet again. Yes, I know the rest of the pen stinks too, but he goes to Weathers over and over and over and over and the results are the same: horrible.

2) The move to PH JR was odd, but I don't think it was the worst decision in the world. By the way, I believe Dent made at call as Narron had already been tossed. Someone in the thread said Narron out smarted himself over the decision. I'd of rather seen JR PH instead of Valentine and then bring up Phillips but oh well.

3) Very poor umpiring today. The Reds blew the game all by themselves but the strike zone was all over the place. There was the questionable call on Dunn at 1B that got Narron booted (never did see a replay on it, but it sure seemed close) and seems to me there were two other bad calls. They didn't change the outcome of the game but they were poor none-the-less.

4) It's LaRue hat day, yet Ross plays and hit's 2 home runs to further underscore that Jason's days in Cincinnati are numbered. If it wern't for that huge contract (everybody say "thanks DanO") he'd have already been traded by now.

5) Milton pitched decent. Not great, but decent. Lot's of full counts however and he was struggling. But at the end of the day he left us in the game.

6) I guess Dunn batted 4th because JR had the day off. Dunn had better be back at #2 tomorow when Jr returns, however, IMO.

When a manager gets the boot I was always under the impression they just went down the tunnel so as to be technically out of the dugout but still relayed orders to the bench coach.
