I wonder does Hammond accept a AAA assignment. He might decide the Reds are his best bet to get back to the Majors.

When they announce things like that, isn't it typically because he might accept the assignment? Maybe it just seems that way to me.

My guess is that he retires.

You know it is time to retire when you are a lefty who has pitched sucessfully for many years and still nobody wants you.

I'm actually surprised he cleared.

Yep. Every team in MLB saying no thanks to an experienced lefty with a pulse just has to tell you its time to hang it up. Of course one would think the 6.91 ERA, 36 Hits and 23 RA in 28.2 IP would do the same so who knows.

Yes, I'm surprised too. What would make teams take (for example) White, Williams, Yan and Mays, but not be willing to give Hammond a shot?

I hope Hammond accepts the assignment. This way maybe he can work on his mechanics and then earn his way backup for the Pen. He could hopefully be like a trade deadline pitcher.

guess this clears the way for the Tejeda/Willis/Cabrera deal, huh?

Looks like retirement. This from rotoworld.com:

Left-hander Chris Hammond cleared waivers Wednesday and became a free agent.

Hammond was designated for assignment by the Reds on June 30.

Ditto

Double Ditto from me. When a left releiver doesn't get picked up by anyone it's time to retire. He's had a nice career overall.
