Saturday marked a full week that a lower abdominal strain has kept catcher David Ross out of the Reds lineup.
It has increased the likelihood that Ross could be placed on the 15-day disabled list soon.
"The one thing none of us want is for him to go out there, play one game, and have a complete setback," Reds manager Jerry Narron said. "Right now, we can back-date it, and he wouldn't miss that much time."
The injury forced Ross out of the July 7 game at Atlanta, which would make a DL move retroactive to July 8. He would be eligible for activation as soon as July 23 against Milwaukee.
"They think it's getting better every day," Ross said. "It's just a nagging thing that anything little I would do to set it back would make it worse."
Putting Ross on the DL would also temporarily solve a roster crunch for the club, which plans to recall pitcher Elizardo Ramirez from Class A Dayton to start against the Rockies on Sunday. Ramirez was sent down last week specifically to throw and stay sharp during the All-Star break.
The 29-year-old Ross has been able throw and catch, but has had discomfort while doing light running.
"Everything else has been good," said Ross, who is batting .310 with 12 homers and 31 RBIs this season. "It's just running, which is a key part of the game."
Jason LaRue, who lost his regular catching duties to Ross in June, started his fifth consecutive game. It's the longest streak of starts for LaRue, who is 9-for-28 (.321) over his last 10 games.
I like this move, and I wonder what it means for LaRue. It is the easiest way to get Lizard back on the team, and it ensures we don't rush Ross back. But i think it also gives LaRue a week or so of consistent starts to prove he isn't shot to the crapper after his injury and slump. If he can piece together a decent week with consistent starts, this would certianly help his stock as a trade chip, and as we have so few chips to trade with this is certianly a plus. I don't see Javy starting any game but tomorrow, with LaRue getting the other starts unless he has a horrible history vs. the pitcher. Thoughts?
