Could very well be the case. Now is it a seeing the ball thing(common slump) or a bat speed thing(beginning of the end)?

Would appear bat speed to me. Rich is an even bigger culprit as I see it, which is why he looks bad very often on soft stuff.

And I would concur, JR needs to bunt in that situation, and almost every AB until they quit the shift. He's killing his OB% and hurting the team too often.

Has not done much in a Reds uniform

except watch Milton pitch the 7th.

watching Bray I just don't see anything that makes me believe he has special stuff. He has an around 90 fastball with a decent slider, but a lot guys have that.

Agreed. The kid should be at AAA perfecting his craft.

This is just a strange time to use Bray. He pitched last night. Mercker was doing fine. A righty is preferable against Wright. Just don't follow Narron on these pitching moves.

Narron is not a George Costanza fan I guess:D

Thought the Bray choice was odd, but basically Jerry is (unusually IMO) pushing the right bullpen buttons so far tonight.

Of course, if this game goes into extras, there could be a Joe Mays sighting.

I definitely see AH coming back on 2 days rest.

I myself came back on 1-2 days rest in 1969 after being knocked out of the box in the 1st against the Padres.....and threw a 1 hitter.

That would be foolish. Harang and Arroyo are already the starting tandem with the most IP in the NL.
Pitch Mays and pull him when he (inevitably) gets into trouble.

Harang should pitch Tuesday against the Astros (and Clemens).

Naturally, they were asked whether Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame, and Hanks and Howard said rather passionately that he should.

"He once said, ‘I’d walk through hell in a gasoline suit to play baseball,’" said Hanks. "That’s a pretty good line."

"Yeah," said Miller, "but unfortunately he would have bet on whether he made it through or not."

Javy vs. Glavine?

I figured they'd give LaRue the day off considering the game starts in less then 12 hours and he just caught the game... I don't always think correctly... But that is what I was thinking..

Does it make sense to sit LaRue on a day game after a night game that ends after midnight?

Does make sense, but Narron doesn't usually play Javy vs. Lefties.

Heck..he's due for a hit right handed.

I stayed totally away from the game thread tonight because of the late delayed 3rd inning and the fact that I needed to be away. It's a great win and one we needed for a number of reason, not the least of which is that the Cardinals won.

As I watched tonight early on, Traschel was throwing that same slow stuff that, for some reason or another, give the Reds' hitters fits. I thought it was going to be a long night, especially with Harang not throwing well at all. Aaron's high pitch counts are wearing on him. He needs to rest until Tuesday and I hope the club does just that.

Tonight, Narron did some intelligent things which surprised me. I know he might have a relapse tomorrow (in fact, he had one tonight by sending both Wise and Castro up to pinch hit. Of course, who else was there?), but for tonight all things worked out and you can credit Edwin E. for getting it started and Jason Larue for getting the big hit. I was glad to see Jason do that mainly because he works so hard, or at least appears to work so hard. Jason will never be considered a smart hitter, but he comes through in strange places--always has.

It was a pleasure to see the Mets bullpen look as bad as ours usually does. Just shows that good middle relief is something to be cherished. Maybe Krivsky isn't so dumb after all.

Rich Aurilia is really putting forth the effort and is coming through. Does that mean he should circumvent EdE at third? Absolutely not. Edwin is a treasure that will be a great player if he gets more playing time. He needs it and Aurilia needs to be playing every other day regardless of his hitting statistics. Not popular I know, but just what I think.

Royce Clayton has been a part of every win we've had in some way or another. Tonight's performance of a hit, a walk, two runs scored, and a peerless fielding night makes FeLo's stastics tonight look pathetic (0-4 with 2 K's). And he looks like the DP is second nature to him. The guy everyone wrote off as a throw in might be one of the jewels.

Eddie Guardado just might be the one thing this club really needed. Oh, he may fall on his face in the future, but his enthusiasm is what I've missed with this club since Jeff Brantly threw that right arm up in victory after a save. It's enthusiasm in victory, something we haven't seen in so long. Good move, Wayne.

Finally, put Ryan Freel in the lineup and watch him screw up. Caught off first in the first inning (Freel is not the most baseball-intelligent lad in the land), and striking out two times does not seem like much, but something happens when he is in the game. Whatever it is, play him until we lose.

And give Brandon Phillips and Junior a day off tomorrow. I still say Junior is not getting anything to hit with Rich following him. So Griffey, being the competitor he is, is swinging at bad pitches because he's a hitter. With the shift, it's the same old thing night after night. Give him a day off without Rich behind him. Please. And when he comes back, find someone else behind him so that he at least sees a strike occasionally. Phillips just needs a day off. Though he had a hit tonight, he's struggling.

Good night and a great win. Bad luck Branson gets to go against Glavine, the Reds killer, tomorrow. Not the best situation for him to be in.

It's a long drive towards the inevitable

I predicted a Mets sweep last night, and unfortunately that prediction is looking spot on at the moment.

It's a done deal if they lose tonight, which is looking very, very likely at the moment.

This game is over.

The Mets are nowhere near done scoring, and this lineup won't put up 4 runs anyways.

How long before the Braves take over the wildcard lead? I say a week.

I've already turned this one off. I'm now watching a good game

Woo Hooo!

Rain Out! Rain Out! Rain Out!

I'll venture a guess and say that the lineup we currently waltz out there will never hammer a pitcher. Way too many weak sticks.

Marty: "They're fighting a losing battle."

I told you this series would be a good test of redszone stamina, not to mention the team.

Seven innings of Reds bullpen against the Mets offense, already trailing by four runs??

Why couldn't they have called this thing an hour ago.

we should just put the ball on a tee and use the extra defender to help shag the rockets

Odds on Ryan Freel throwing an inning later on tonight -- I'll put it at 15:1. Any takers?

Let's get some runs and cut into this lead!

This is far from the 7th game of the World Series.

There are 6 innings left

Mets seem to be playing to get out of there...a good time to get back in it

There we go!

Let's get some more!

WTG EE! Lets keep the rally going.

I need to change my underwear.

We really need to go for the gusto in this inning

Good inning, it's now a ballgame!

TIED UP!

To be the man, you got to beat the man. Whoooooo!

Holy decent bullpen!

come on tackleberry

So i guess Bluto was right.....it really was not over after the Germans bombed pearl harbor

Its optimism....i think.

The bottom of our line up rocks!!!

Its Redzone whipping boy redemption night

7 scoreless innings by this bullpen.

Lets hope Narron gains some confidence in this BP now.... or at least gives them the chance.

And how about that veteran presence?

Aurilia is hot! Game tying Hr, 12 game hitting streak? .841 OPS

Hatteberg 3 fer 4

And I tip my hat to Clayton and Ph'er EE too.

But 5 of the 7 runs were produced by guys that really get alot of disdain thrown their way.

So much for that Met sweep. ;)

I liked this little summary of last night's game on the New York Times' web page - words I don't think any of us expected to ever hear uttered a few weeks ago:

After a lengthy rain delay, the Mets managed two hits over the remaining seven innings and could not match the dynamic effort by the Reds’ relief crew

The beer was cheaper elsewhere. I was actually hoping it got rained out so I'd have a freebie to attend later this year, but oh well.

As long as this one ends in a W, I'm satisfied.

You and me both, partner - but I had two small boys with me wondering when the rain would stop.

I was ready to go to the advance ticket window and start turning them in.

My biggest worry is how it affects my sig line. I went to the game, I have the ticket stubs to prove it, but I didn't wait for the delay to end, therefore it's not an "official" game since I didn't stay through the bottom of the fifth.

I may need a ruling from MissKitty on this one. :D

From the New York Post article:

July 20, 2006 -- CINCINNATI - In the sixth and seventh innings last night, Aaron Heilman didn't give up a hit to the Reds, and the game stayed tied.
In the eighth, Duaner Sanchez took the hill, and the game was tied no more.

Sanchez allowed three runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal a 7-4 Mets defeat to the Reds last night.

Hard to see how Heilman has that 4.5 ERA with that nasty stuff he has. Heck I wish he was in the Reds rotation

Heilman has "Milton-like" numbers when looking at how he does against a lineup the first, second and third time. He just gets hammered once hitters see him a time or two. Mets announcers said last night that's why Randolph and Peterson are reluctant to take him out of the pen.
