Per Marc's blog -

Freel back in there

As expected, Ryan Freel is starting in right field and leading off tonight, with Denorfia getting a day off. And, for those who seem increasingly obsessed with the third base situation, Rich Aurilia is starting there again. Keep in mind that he's riding an 11-game hitting streak.

For the record, a sweat-soaked Edwin Encarnacion just wrapped up a session of early work with Bucky Dent at third base.

We know Freel's leading off and Aurilia's hitting 4th. I'm heading down tonight with my two boys...anyone else?

If not, have a good game thread everybody.

Hey, if the playing time for Aurilia results in the hitting streak Richus has put together *and* a Randa-like trade for some decent young pitching, I don't mind if Encarnacion has to sit for a bit now.

If Aurilia was hitting like crap... that's when I would be mad.

I'm to the point where I think they almost *have* to be showcasing Aurilia. There just can be no other explanation. EE's defense isn't *that* bad, particularly when you consider who is replacing him there.

The man IS on an 11 game hitting streak -- a little perspective here? It's not like they're benching EE for Anderson Machado or something.

you can think of it this way too...

3B who has exactly average range gets 350 Total Chances
Aurilia we'll say has that exact average range (even though i think he doesn't), and with a 951 FP, that's roughly 332 outs.

Encarnacion we'll say has better range than average by we'll say 15%. so instead of 350 Total Chances, the number becomes 402 because of EdE's range. at his current .897 FP, that's roughly 361 outs.

an over simplification, but useful none-the-less.

Of course, but no one believes that Aurilia is the long term answer at third base for this club. If it was only a matter of keeping his bat in the lineup, he could just as easily slide over to short or--even better--first base and keep things clicking there.

The fact that the Reds not only keep playing him--but keep playing him at a position such as third--tells me that they're not simply trying to keep his hot bat in the lineup, they're trying to woo potential suitors for Mr. Aurilia's services.

Apples and oranges. Keeping Milton in the lineup was an obvious spur-of-the-moment blunder that even Narron admits was a screw up. Aurilia's performing well, and could be potential trade bait. That's two very strong reasons for keeping him in the lineup on a daily basis.

It's better than Bowden oilslick or O'Brien tedium, though. He at least answers questions, even if he is a little too straightforward sometimes.

I wouldn't want a GM who gives away his entire game plan to the media, anyway. That's one area of sports where it's okay to be a little vague.

Of course, the Reds were just handled nicely by another high-WHIP wonder- Josh Fogg. When Hal McCoy was whining a week or so ago about how the Reds missed their golden opportunity to sign Fogg (now having a career year with an ERA in the low fours), I laughed my @$$ off.

nope. logic.

over the last two years, GG qualifying 3B average 350 Total Chances. so logically, an exactly average ranged 3B will get around 350 TC.

for the sake of argument, we'll say Aurilia is exactly average in that regard. he has a 951 FP. that's 332 outs convereted.

for the sake of argument, we'll say Encarnacion is abover average range and can get to 15% more balls than Aurilia. that's 402 TC, with an 897 FP that's 361 outs converted.

After he threw 135 pitches before the break, I think everyone was expecting him to get pounded in his next start. But that was the Rockies playing on the road, and he either pitched well or they just hit poorly.

Could this be the start where the other shoe drops? Is that a myth? I guess we'll find out if Harang is due for a whooping or if he's just doing his Elizardo impression.

That's what killed me earlier this year. Jerry was so shell shocked by the BP that he would leave Harang and BA in the game till the 8th on mult occasions no mater what the score was. I'm still in shock after leaving BA in there for 100 pitches in Milwaukee during a slaughter.

Best team in the NL -- it was only a matter of time until someone in New York figured out "Hey, we have the money to put a good team on the field at Shea too..."

The Mets have always spent money but usually they spent it on guys like Bonilla and Moe Vaughn. Though It could be argued that they overpaid for Pedro, Beltran and Wagner, but I guess if you got it, flaunt it.

Lots of Mets fans are worried about their starting pitching and whether its good enough to stand up in the post season. Pedro is not where he was last year and Glavine has been shaky lately. They don't have much after that.

The Rox are looking for relievers, and the Royals have Elmer Dessens and Jeremy Affeldt available. Mike MacDougal also has a chance to be dealt. That warning track is a swamp....and it's raining again

The field is going to be flooded if it keeps on raining.

It's times like these (and only times like these) that I am thankful for U.S. Bank Arena.

So, if the game does go back on, who comes back out to the mound to re-start the game? You almost have to go to Matt Belisle or Joe Mays here.

Belisle is on the DL.

I think that would be illegal. :p:

Oh crap I forgot Mays was starting Saturday. You almost have to call someone up from the minors for tomorrow unless you start Standridge.

I doubt they will want EZ going on 3 days rest.

Unless you could always start Mays tomorrow and pitch Milton on short rest Saturday or call someone up then.

Those Zamboni carpet suckers were pretty cool. I have a picture of the starting 8 from 75 and they are all sitting on one of them called "The Big Red Machine". Cool picture.

The radar shows a slim line of showers north of 275 to the bottom of 275 going due south, straight over downtown.

They could probably call up Justin Germano for a spot start since Joe Mays is supposed to start on saturday.

This game is only in the 2nd. If it starts, it won't start until 10:15 at the earliest, meaning the game won't end until like 1.

Then you have to play a 12:35 day game tomorrow.

Just call it.
