I'm glad I had a conference call for that bottom of the sixth. That is what drives me NUTS about this team. Talk about canceling the good feelings I had when Arroyo had the successful sacrifice in the 5th. Between giving up outs on the defensive side (generally speaking) and not executing with RISP on offense, it is enough to drive a man to drink (or to drink more...during appropriate, non-business hours of course [never know when the work internet police are trolling ;) ]

There is only one manager that I knew of that had the guts to place almost ALL left-handed hitters in a lineup against Glavine. Ray Knight did it in 96 or 97 and we BEAT Glavine at HOME. (Glavine had a great record at Riverfront) He is one of the few LEFT-HANDED pitchers that is tougher on RIGHT HANDED Hitters. (I am glad Edwin is playing though :) )
Here is the report on Glavine:
"Particularly deadly against right-handed batters, his control frustrates hitters who know what to expect but rarely succeed in foiling the lethal left-hander. Glavine occasionally works in a sharp breaking curveball".
Two runs in six innings. I wish I would have ate my words regarding this lineup.
kevinc12345
07-20-2006, 02:51 PM
The only reasons why I would possibly condone what Narron did (pulling EE for Hatte) would be these two factors playing into the decision: Hatte LEADS the NL in putting the ball in play when he swings (which obviously didn't happen there), and the sub also set the defense into a much more comfortable set with RA at 3rd and Hatte at first.
I think it was a bad decision - as well as EE has been swinging the bat - but it's not an utterly unconventional move.
Now after considering all of that, let's see if it loses us the game :(

Why would you consider it the "right" move? Do you always pull RH hitters for LH hitters? Do you pull a guy who is having a great day simply because the pitcher is right handed? Do you always go with "The Vet"?

Not always, and i will give you that EE has had a great day, but what you need there is contact. What is your best chance at a ball put in play? Hatte, or EE? It failed this time, and i dont think its old thinking, there are simple percentages to play, and that was a percentage play. Just my opinion though, a lot of posters hammer Narron for every move that doesnt work, and thats just the nature of the beast. All i was trying to say was you cant be upset that he doesnt make a move by the book and it fails, then when he goes by the book and it still fails, you cant play both sides based on outcome.

Here's some news from Marc's blog that could effect the wild card race:
Ken Rosenthal is reporting that Atlanta has acquired Bob Wickman from Cleveland for a Class A catcher.
Not a bad pickup for the Braves, at what would appear to be minimal cost. Not that Wickman is anywhere near lights-out anymore, but considering the nonsense Atlanta was running out there to close games, he's got to be an upgrade.

Personally I'm surprised, every indication was that Wickman wouldn't waive his no trade clause.

If you think that was a stupid move... I am glad you are regulated to message board baseball guy, than actually running a team. Narron played the percentages, made the right call, if Glavine stayed in, EE hits, a TOUGH righty comes up, you go with the Vet. He made the right call regardless of the outcome. People on this board are way to emotional to identify the right moves when they see them.
I understand the percentages.
I understand that EE has reached base 11 out of his last 13 ABs, and has a very good .878 OPS vs right handers.
Hatte's numbers vs righies are better, but he's coming off the bench cold to face a "tough righty" for a guy that has been tearing the cover off the ball. Since he failed, you also have now replaced EE with RA, an offensive downgrade in a tie ballgame.
I am hardly overly emotional, and I very much disagree that it was the right move. If Mr. Hat has come through, it would STILL have been the wrong move.

Wickman is pretty scary, don't get me wrong, but not a bad gamble for Atl.
