View Full Version : I'm disappointed in the front office on this Mays ordeal

40,000 fans coming to see the Reds on a sellout Saturday and all the better the Reds can do is start Joe Mays?
Pathetic.
The front office has done terrific acquiring Arroyo, Phillips, Ross, Mewjewski, Bray, etc..............but the inability to find a better 5th starter for a big game like today is inexcusable.
They make a big trade to buffer the bullpen and encourage the team that they're trying to win this thing and THEN THEY START JOE MAYS?
Give me a break. I think it sent a bad message to the players and fans today starting this guy.
I never wanted to rush Homer Bailey..........but I would bet a million dollars that as a 5th starter his e.r.a. will never approach 8.00 even as a clueless rookie.
This team is leading the wild card and the front office can do no better than JOE MAYS?
They have to do better than that.

I really wish they'd go after Elmer Dessens. He's had a couple of very good years (1 with Cincy, of course), and Krivsky wouldn't hardly have to give up anything. He can't go past the 5th inning, but he'd fill the role of 5th starter adequately - then move to the bullpen once they find a true 5th.

The Reds won, I would think most of the fans were happy leaving the ballpark.

I agree on Mays, but starting a rookie to quick in front of a sold out crowd might not be the best thing either. I would bet money Mays will be DFA tomorrow if not sooner. I think this was his last chance. Even bullpen by committee is a better idea then Mays at this point. Hopefully Claussen, Belise, anyone can do it.

They took a flier on him that he could return to his Twins day form. He hasn't, and probably will get DFA'd tommorow, and we will go out and get another starter. This is the same type of move they made with BP, Ross, and Everyday Eddie, but those worked out and this one didn't........they can't all work out. So we will cut our losses and try and find a starter.............or we will not DFA Mays and me and you both will be whining over how stupid the FO is to keep Mays...lol:D

Mays doesn't even have to be DFA'd. He has a minor league contract.
Send him to Louisville. Bring Germano or Gosling up for a start, if something better can't be found in time.
Whatever Krivsky owed Mays from their Twins days...it's paid. He got his shot..blew it.

Wouldn't it be more fun to DFA him? I think it would. What a stellar group he would join: Williams, White, Hammond, Yan. Pretty good stuff there. Am I forgetting anyone?

No problem with a DFA from me. The point I was making is that you can send if down if you want to.

Maybe we could keep Mays around to pitch batting practice to Jr.? Hitting off of Mays might give Jr. the confidence he needs to break out of his slump ;)

I'll bet most of those fans wouldn't know Joe Mays from Willie Mays. They came because of the two promotions that happened tonight.

What two promotions? I only know of one.... and it was Reds matchbox corvettes to only 10,000 fans 18 or younger. I don't think that brings out 41,000 plus flans.

It was family night too. That's why we were there; mom, dad, 2 girls, grandma, grandpa, aunt, and uncle. It was a very entertaining game...unless you're a big fan of starting pitching. ;)

Can you imagine if a team actually did make baseball decisions based on their marketing schedule? "We're pitching Arroyo on three days rest because it's refrigerator magnet night." What a mess that would be.

Actually, I did know that... forgot! We had $5 tickets so it didn't apply; guess that's why it slipped my mind.

Right now, given the option of dealing with horrible pitching from the number 5 starter spot, or promoting Homer Bailey anytime soon, give me horrible pitching. I don't know a ton about Bailey, but I do know that the Reds are not going to win it all this year. There's a good chance of them winning the Wildcard, but you have to be realistic and see that they simply aren't going to run the gauntlet they would have to run, in the form of the Mets, Cardinals, and Red Sox (My take). Now, that doesn't mean we should trade for prospects and give up, not by a long shot, but we shouldn't rush along a player that's simply not ready yet, and risk ruining him before he has a chance to shine.
I'm all for going out and making another trade before the deadline, but I just don't want to see us push players earlier than they need to be pushed to make a run at the Series. Bailey should end the year in AA this year, pitch a few months of AAA ball, and if that goes well, come up to the Major League level next year, in the early summer.

No kidding!
Sure it would be nice for the fans if Arroyo or Harrang was going tonight but guess what, each of them pitches once every 4 or 5 home games and all the fans that were at the game tonight are more than welcome to go to those games as well.
Obviously though it is promotions that get fans out to ballpark, not a winning team. A sellout when Joe Mays pitches during a promotion. Lucky to have 20,000 when Arroyo and Harrang pitch when it is only about the baseball.

I'd prefer they didn't--the difference between Mays' suckitude and Lohse's suckitude is negligible. They're both toast.
I'm usually a proponent of "you can't go home again", but if Elmer Dessens is available and the price is suitably desultory, I wouldn't mind it a bit.

Lohse has been pretty good since coming back from his demotion.Although pitching out of the pen Im sure he'd be far more effective than Mays (hard not to be). Hes our next Guardado.

I'm not opposed to it provided we give up nothing of real value.

It's 7:00 A.M. on Sunday morning. I was really hoping to read somewhere this morning that Mays was DFA'd. Can't find it anywhere  .

Give him a blindfold and a cigarette. ;)

And that is the crux of it.
Teams all over MLB are picking up DFAs before they even hit the ground.
Everyone is desperate, and a majority are low risk. If they don't work out, they can throw them in the trash heep.

I watched batting practice a few times over the past couple of years, now I don't know if he is still doing it now, but Tommy Hume did a pretty good job of throwing fat ones for Jr, and Dunn.

I don't disagree with your central premise that they should not force Bailey.
However the Reds just finsished the season's series at 4-3 against the Mets (with 4 games at Shea) and currently stand 5-2 against the Cardinals. So, with Harang and Arroyo at the top of the rotation, if they can get to the playoffs, they stand just about as good a chance as any other NL team to be the sacrificial lamb at the World Series.
The Reds problem is going to be getting enough from the the Lizzard, AirRic Milton, and whomever else in the 5 hole to get them into the playoffs. If the race looks like it does now this time next month and Homer Bailey is still dominating in the minors the pressure is really going to be racheted up on Mr. Krivsky to bring Bailey up. There is already a strong inference that Narron believes they might as well bring him up; and if the playoffs seem to be hanging in the balance it is easy to see Mr. Castellini throwing his support to that move too. If you see Baily elevated to AAA in the next week or two that will be a definite sign they are seriously looking at bringing him on up this year.

Mays can't be optioned down. The only way to send him down is to take him off the 40 man and expose him to waivers. Not that that would be a bad thing...
