View Full Version : How much has FO spent on DFA?

Just wondering how much money has been spent so far this season of DFAing guys. For the record, I'm thrilled we finally have a FO that is willing to cut guys who are underperforming instead of trotting them out every day and allowing them to underperform. I remember when it was a big deal that the Reds cut Jimmy Haynes or DeAngelo Jiminez. So far this season, we have:

Bubba Nelson (2/1/06 - bet you forgot about him ;))
Jason Standridge (3/21/06 - glad we got him back)
Matt Kata (4/7/06 - yeah, I like BP a lot better too. Is he still in Lousiville?)
Andy Abad (4/16/06 - ok, so he was cheap)
Tony Womack (4/24/06 - yay!)
Dave Williams (5/20/06 - another yay... but is he worse than Mays?)
Rick White (6/19/06 - thats the day Jason came back)
Chris Hammond (6/30/06 - no more infinity ERA)
Quinton McCracken (7/6/06 - I hated watching his batting box routine... I nicknamed him gumby)
Esteban Yan (7/14/06 - eh...)
Joe Mays???? (7/23/06)

Now granted, some of those guys are spring training guys, early season guys because of injury, etc... I just went down the list of transactions since January and wrote down all the DFAs. But really, we have Womack, Williams, White, Hammond, McC, and Yan. How much do you figgure that runs the Reds? Especially with Mays *hopefully* soon to join the list? Certianly more than Uncle Carl's operation would have spent.

I always thought "Wille Mays Hayes" from Major League.

Matt Kata is still in the Reds minor league system.

IIRC, Williams was owed most of 4 million and none of the rest of those guys was making over $1 million. The ones who were picked off of other teams' DFA scrap heaps were making the ML minimum, which is around $400K.

I thought Womack was making a little over a mil...

dang wireless keyboard is cutting out letters...

Matt Kata & Andy Abad are playing in Louisville. Kata in fact hit a RBI double in the 9th tonight to aid in a 3 run comeback for a 6-4 road win.

jaxred's site usually has that info and much more for the 40-man roster.

White was picked up by the Phils so the Reds got off the hook.

In addition to Womack, I think the Reds owe Hammond the rest of the way and some amount for Yan. Williams is owed some amount of his 2006 by the Reds but the Mets picked him up in a trade

I think the rest do not have major league contracts with the Reds.

Looks like ~3M so far?? Hopefully this futile waste of resources will not be repeated next season (all DanO's guys but Yan)

I am glad this organization understands the concept of a sunk cost.

Does anybody know what Yan is up to nowadays since being DFA'ed? I know that he came to the ballpark this past Friday. Don't know what he was doing there, but he came in and such.

He has been designated for assignment (7/14), so there's not much he can do until the Reds assign him. We should hear something tomorrow, as that's the 10th day by my count. I expect he'll be released, and it wouldn't surprise me to see him suited up for someone by the end of the year.

I would expect Yan to be headed to Louisville.

I would have rather seen Williams out there Saturday than Mays.

I think Williams had some mechanical flaws that needed straightened out. His career hasn't been nearly as bad as Mays.

I witnessed Dave Williams pitch this year, and I would say this:

6 of 1....ah you know the rest.
