Heath

Nice Sunday Special.

For the love of Pete, there is NO excuse that EdE should not be playing. Even Clayton's 'hot'.

Jerry Narron has to be like John Forbes Nash, Jr. In his garage he's got 2432950425 different lineup on Post-it notes think each move will critcally save the world.

However, Narron's not going to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

It's so weird. Does the cleanup spot have more to do with whoever is playing 3b or is RA and EE, in Jerry's opinion, both cleanup worthy? If they both are, then he HAS to figure out a way to get them both in the lineup.

PuffyPig
07-23-2006, 12:19 PM
Why not move Phillips to SS (for this game), have Aurilia play 2nd, and get EE into the line up at the expense of Castro?

It appears that Narron is going to go with Clayton/ Castro at SS and Phillips at 2nd for the rest of the year because he values that defensive set up. Whether that is true is debatable, but it's clear that Jerry thinks so.

It probably is a better defensive combo, but the fact remains that the difference between Castro's and EE's offense is so great it negates the defensive advantage.

Mitri

why not move phillips to ss every day? would it be that difficult of an adjustment for him?

Ughh... 18% of the outs in a season are made by a SS and the Reds just jettisoned a guy with a .954 fielding % .

Why would you want to put a guy who has the range of Rubin creation at SS?

Defense is the the strings in a Beatles song, take em away and it's a different track.

Ah, Jerry's unforgiving love for vets continues.
It's kind of like his love for the likes of "season, scrappy vets" Herbert Perry, Frank Catalanotto, Ken Caminiti, and Ricky Ledee when he was in Texas.
Of course, we know how well those teams did.

Well... hitter might be the term that stinks in that summation.. I should have used "batter" because the man might not get a hit out of it but his hacking and fouling of the ball impresses Narron.

That said his numbers this year at 1-2 is .455/.455/.697 as for 0-2 the whole Reds team stinks this year in that count.

Ohka is a right handed pitcher....
Aurilia vs righties - .681 OPS
Edwin vs righties - .862 OPS

Seems like a simple concept to just take a look at the numbers doesnt it? Not to mention that Edwin went 2-5 yesterday. Seriously, what does the kid have to do to get 90% of the starts at 3rd base?

Over his last start and so far in today's start, Milton's walked six guys in only nine total innings.

Milton's lone strength has been his ability to avoid walking guys, though he's still lousy when he doesn't walk them. When he starts walking guys, it's about as ugly as a recipe that you can mix together.

What I like about Milton is his effectiveness.

There is one benefit today. Milton is at least already at 46 pitches while only giving up two runs. He might reach 100 pitches before giving up seven runs today. Maybe ...

Granted, he's liable to be at 100 pitches after the fourth inning so I'm not sure that's any better.

Bear with me, because I'm working on a theory here...

A pitcher gives up two runs in the second, and we immediately project six runs by the sixth, yet if a quality start is three runs in six, those runs might happen in the second. Just because Milton gives up two runs doesn't mean he's on his way to a blowout, he might be on his way to a quality start.

Yes, I know it's Milton, and I also know that the last couple of outs in the sixth tend to blow up, but two runs in the second don't necessarily equal a blowout.

Right, but it means he's more likely to be on his way to a blowout. He had 46 pitches after two innings; those are high-stress innings and those high-stress innings will contribute to the increased chances of blowing up later in the game. We should consider ourselves lucky that Milton's figured out a way to throw three scoreless innings since the second inning.

All that said, here's to hoping Milton throws another scoreless inning here in the sixth. His spot in the order is due to leadoff in the bottom half of the inning, and I'm hoping that Narron pinch hits for Milton (assuming he gets through this inning, of course).

I wonder if hitting and running bases affects Milton's knee at all? He has only been to the plate twice this game, which means less wear and tear.

Would he be better off just sitting down in between innings?

Would he be a better pitcher in the AL?

Not at all...he's warm...he's pitching very well, his flow is great...you send him out there for another inning,....at least, if not, two.

Why not move Phillips to SS (for this game), have Aurilia play 2nd, and get EE into the line up at the expense of Castro?

Too easy, then Clayton and Castro would not be starting as often, and they know how to play the game..THE RIGHT WAY

He is creeping up in the zone, this inning should be it for him no matter what.
I can somewhat understand Jerry's logic for wanting to squeeze more out of his starters with how much the BP has been used of late, but this is playing with fire.

Meanwhile Ohka Ks, 2 more Milty.

Ohka''s pitch count has always been 100 pitches...with this being his first game back in three months...I don't think they'll let him go past 90 pitches....this should be his last inning....

but then again with Milwaukie's pen the way it is, they might let him go 100 pitches.
