It just absolutely stinks and what this near-total lack of playing time says to me is that Wayne Krivsky genuinely values Aurilia's current level and plateau of production over Edwin's.

Jerry is a really dumb manager but I thought Wayne would be the one to realize this, not give him free reign to do what he is doing or actually sign off on such moves as 'good ideas.'

Encarnacion has been back on the roster and off the DL for 15 games this season. He's started exactly six of those games.

He's hitting .293/.386/.505, good for an .891 OPS and 6.88 RC/27, and I don't know of anyone that predicted that type of line out of him this season (close to that line, but not that high of an OBP).

Here's a post from spring training from jmcclain19... http://www.redszone.com/forums/showpost.php?p=901782&postcount=33

As WOY pointed out, a great year for EdE would be around

.280AVG/.335OBP/.475SLG/.810OPS

Just so everyone has a point of reference here

2005 Stats

David Wright
.306AVG/.388OBP/.523SLG/.911OPS

Eric Chavez
.269AVG/.329OBP/.466SLG/.794OPS

Morgan Ensberg
.283AVG/.388OBP/.557SLG/.945OPS

Hank Blalock
.263AVG/.318OBP/.431SLG/.749OPS

Melvin Mora
.283AVG/.348OBP/.474SLG/.821OPS

If EdE puts up numbers close to these type of numbers every Reds fan should be doing cartwheels.

Yes, Aurilia's done a decent job, but he's still been outperformed quite a bit by Encarnacion in 2006. To say this is starting to get ridiculous with Encarnacion riding the bench is a bit of an understatement.

VR

I like Dunn @ the two spot vs. Raja......18 ab's, 6 hits, 6 walks, 1k

Griff OPS over .1000 vs Clemens as well, around 100 abs:thumbup:

WMR
07-25-2006, 07:26 PM
Referencing that data, Cyclone, it appears clear that while Jerry has been clearly identified for a long time as a man who assigns high-value to 'abilities' not really quantifiable, Krivsky is appearing to sit in the very same boat.

Are they really not smart enough to use simple range factoring to conclude that, without even considering offense, EE is a superior defensive 3B to Aurilia? They clearly seem to both think of Aurilia as being a better defensive 3B-man when there is absolute evidence--not counting the freaking bald open eye--and stats which definitively state EE's worth?

Always worry about overtaxed arms.

No two arms are created equally. Harang is a proven dependable horse, whose arm can take it. That smooth effortless motion will allow him to be a 200-250 inning guy. And he actually strikes people out with those 100 + pitches, uncharted territory for us Reds fans.
Kudos to him for getting his body in shape the last year and a half...enabling him to be a reliable front of the rotation guy.

which is what I predicted would happen after 3-4 days of rehab at which I thought it was pretty obvious the powers that be liked RA at 3rd better than EE. Of course I got called a "conspiracy theorist" among other things when all I was doing was reading the tea leaves and interpreting what I saw happening. Heck, I didn't even chastise the management, all I did was predict what was going to happen.

I don't think anyone would be going out on a limb postulating that Jerry would pick Aurilia over EE to start at third. He has two thirds of the time since he has been (belatedly) back on the major league squad.

Rich seems to be a human speedbump for developing players.
Last year, he kept a young Lopez out of the lineup. Now he keeps a young Edwin out of the lineup.
I do believe Rich can be a valuable backup - unfortunately, Jerry has absolutely no concept of such a thing. I think the only thing which will knock him out of the lineup now is a huge slump.

Workhorse pitchers, even the burliest, baddest, toughest dudes on the planet, succumb to arm injuries; Harang's velocity was down and his location was off in his last start. No Reds fan should be comfortable with those facts.

Here's another Encarnacion tidbit from 2006 ...

In 241 plate appearances, he has 21 doubles. That's one double every 11.47 plate appearances. Over a full season, that's in the neighborhood of about 57 doubles.

Heck, the all-time major league record for doubles in a single season is 67, which was set by Earl Webb way back in 1931. The last players to reach 60 or more doubles in a single season were Hall of Famers Joe Medwick (64 doubles) and Charlie Gehringer (60 doubles), both in 1936.

But hey, I guess a third baseman with an OPS near .900 and a pace of 57 two baggers this season just isn't good enough to start on a regular basis for our 2006 Cincinnati Reds.

Such a shame.

Another log to add to the Wayne screw-up fire (soon to be a conflagration): Cody Ross is OPSing .850 for Florida, and just hit his 7th homer of the season against Atlanta.

Always a pleasure to give up a guy who's slugging ~.500 in late July instead of keeping him around as a backup outfielder. Instead, we've gotten 74 combined plate appearances out of McCracken and Wise, and those 74 plate appearances have given us a combined line of .197/.243/.288.

Small sample size or not, that's a .531 OPS chosen over Cody Ross. And given DeWayne Wise's major and minor league track record, I'm not too excited about that figure spiking up anytime soon.

May 21st: 11-31

Since May 22nd: 34-21
