Reds are becoming unwatchable again.

Wayne, it's ok to de-emphasize offense if you're going to have good pitching. Don't think we are there yet.

That was a good AB by Dunn too....and with Griffey coming up....man, what is Freel's deal?

Time for a day off for Mr. Freel

MrCinatit
08-02-2006, 09:12 PM
That is the kind of play which literally would get one of the younger players benched for practically the rest of the year.
Freel is Chris Sabo-bad on the basepaths.

Wily Mo goes boom. Boston up, 4-3.

Virginia Beach Reds
08-02-2006, 09:13 PM
I don't believe I've ever seen a quick toss to first in that fashion before....that was really sneaky. Freel should have been paying attention instead of trying to look at the open fleshy wound on his face.

flyer85
08-02-2006, 09:13 PM
The silver lining is that Dunn had an 1-2 count and now he'll lead off the inning.but he had a couple of nice swings. I'd rather have continued that AB

Eric_Davis
08-02-2006, 09:13 PM
W/o a doubt. Or should Freel stop sending himself?

I was wondering the same thing...(is it Freel sending himself)..

He's first picked off (or caught stealing...doesn't really matter) with no outs, down by four, and Dunn, Junior and Hatteberg coming up.

Then, down by three with two outs, knowing that he'll get a jump because of the two outs...he tries to steal again. He's going to score anyway by a solid single by Dunn, and if he doesn't, then Junior comes up with two men on anyway and a chance to tie it.

Dumb! Dumb! Dumb!

It is during times like this when the ballclub needs a manager who will close the doors and rip the club a new one.
Way, way, way too many lazy, stupid mistakes. Way, way, way too many guys smiling after making those mistakes - and smiling when losing.
We need a manager who will grab the club by the scruff of the neck - and is not afraid to make some drastic lineup changes in the process. The heck with this "we're in the hunt, we can't change" attitude - we will not win it with that attitude.
so ends another nightly rant.

Not sure if this has been posted, but Sports Guy had all these stats on Papi today. Pretty ridiculous.

Then you have Big Papi, the best clutch hitter of his generation. The Elias Sports Bureau was nice enough to send these numbers along: If Ortiz has one more walk-off hit in 2006, he'll be the first baseball hitter to have six in a single season since the division era began in 1969. ... Since the start of 2005, he's come up 13 times with the chance for a game-ending plate appearance and made an out only once (and he ended up winning that game in the 12th inning). ... He has the most walk-off hits in any four-year span (12, and that doesn't include the three in the 2004 playoffs, which made him the only player in history with three game-ending postseason hits). ... Since he joined the Red Sox in 2003, he has 15 walk-off hits and the rest of the team has 19 total. ... Since Aug. 1, 2004, Ortiz has hit 21 home runs in 138 at-bats in Late-Inning Pressure Situations (no other player has more than 13). ... Dusty Baker has the most career walk-off hits (25, including the playoffs), but Ortiz is 10 behind. And just for the record, none of those stats include all the times when he tied a game or gave the Red Sox the lead in the seventh or eighth inning.

Heck, the umps they let go were pretty darn bad themselves. I could be imagining it, but the overall quality of the umpiring seems to have become markedly worse the last couple of seasons. It's embarassing to see so much incompetence from the umps regularly.

I have said this time and time again.....kind of like a "play EE" post....or Narron sucks post........ GET the human element out of calling the balls and strikes.

Have a machine call it.....have the ump regurgetate the call via some device in his hand that says....Green is a strike....Red is a ball.

He can do the other stuff..... but do not leave something like balls and strikes to the human eye...beacuse it does not work.

I think MLB does it now, btu I don't think they have the gonads to crack down on the incompetence so pervasive throughout ML umps. It's not that hard to call balls and strikes. With the nature of umpiring, I think it's one of the few professions where a high turnover rate is a good thing. I think it would be good to see the bottom 10% let go every year.

IIRC, before the Twins let him go, they tried to screw with his swing, plate discipline and just about his entire approach at the plate.

When Ortiz responded poorly to all that nonsense, they cut him loose.

Living here in Minnesota, I've met several Twins fans and the concensus is that Terry Ryan tried to turn him into a smallball player and when it didn't take he gave up on him (I've seriously heard that from multiple people). I'm not sure how true it is, but one guy even said that Ryan has since admitted it. But you're right, it's not something they don't think about. Ortiz in that lineup and they're a different team.

Baseball Prospectus goes into heavy detail in Mind Game on what the Twins tried to do with Ortiz. Your summary above just about matches what BP wrote.

There's a famous Ortiz quote from his Twins days on his response to what they wanted him to do, but it's not exactly family appropriate.

I wonder how many people who noticed it were chastised by people saying that the responsibility lies solely on the player and not the coaches and that players should take full responsibility for their performance? I'm not trying to be facetious here, but I brought up the idea that it looked like Dunn's approach had been screwed with by coaches and there was some reports in the press saying as much. The concesus response here was something to the effect of "at what point in time does it become the responsibility of the player?" I always thought that coaching does matter.

I remember reading about Braves coaches trying to change Hank Aarons homerun swing. This was because he batted crosshanded. This was because when he had grown up carrying Ice blocks and his wrist strength developed in a cross handed way. When he tried to bat the way the Braves coaches wanted he kept striking out. When the coaches turned away from him he hit a couple towering homeruns. They then noticed he was back to batting crosshanded. the owners decided to let him bat the way he wanted to. Imagine if he was forced to quit hitting with his natural homerun swing.
