I dont get Narron. If Edwin has a bat good enough to hit clean up when he actually plays, shouldnt his bat be good enough to play every day?

Glad Edwin gets to play today. Lets go Reds!

I'm hoping Encarnacion has a game that matches what Ty Cobb did on May 5th, 1925. Maybe, just maybe, a performance like that would help generate future starts.

BTW, on that day, all Cobb did was go 6-6 with 16 total bases, hitting three home runs, a double and two singles.

Hooray for EE!

Adam Dunn is 1 for 16 in his career against Penny. Griffey is 7 for 19 with 2 homers.

So, Clayton not playing the game the right way since he came over has absolutely no bearing on his playing time. Interesting how that stupid little saying of Narron's has no meaning, apparently.

RH bat with pop to split up two lefties, that's how Narron uses #4.

.267/.352/.504/.856 (62 rbi's) from the Reds #4 guys this year, .247/.316/.517/.833 from #3 (85 rbi's)

I was thinking the exact same thing.

I still don't get why Clayton is starting over Castro. And I can't believe I am actually WISHING they'd give the regular starting shortstop job to a guy with Castro's bat.

I also don't get why Ross is automatically stuck at the end of the lineup. What does the guy have to do to move higher in the order? Is Narron just convinced his entire season has been a fluke that is due to regress to the mean at any moment?

Here's hoping last night's debacle jolts the Reds into a streak of hard-nosed, winning baseball.

He might be feasting down there too, less pressure, more fastballs.

He's killing his PECOTA

Dave Ross .313/.380/.695

90% .258/.325/.464

Ross is killing his projection, prior to the year BP had this to say about him

Ross will have to step it up to guarantee himself a roster spot that comes with major league meal money. He’s got enough pop to do it, and can be useful if he can ever top .240.

I don't think "Baseball Guy" has any idea what regression to the mean (...erm...) means. I think he bats Ross 7th or 8th because, as noted, that's where the catcher bats.

Hell, at least it's not Miley batting Castro second because the shortstop always bats second. (Yes, Dave, when the shortstop's name is Barry Larkin, he does.)

Just so I don't get accused of being negative, I'm going to pray a little before this one:

Please just play well this evening Reds. I actually dislike it when you play poorly. So play well. Go all out. Give not only effort but demonstrate skill when you are able. Swagger. Be confident. Realize that it's the bloodless Dodgers that you are facing and not the Cardinals or Brewers. And most of all, win. That's why I follow the game--to see a win. Not to be embarrassed. To see a win. I want the Dodgers to leave town with two losses, wondering if they are still in it. I want to win. Win.

Win.

That is all. I feel better. Now I'm ready to be sweet as sweet potato pie!!!!

Even before the AS break, I was more worried about the starters than the bullpen. I just didn't see how they could keep up the pace they were on. It's looking like the starting staff could be the achilles heel that winds up costing the Reds down the stretch. Hopefully Arroyo can regain his form and Elizardo can somehow manage to avoid the inevitable downfall that usually accompanies a 23 year old pitching this many innings for the first time in their career. But I fear that the odds are too strong to overcome.

Compare Starters 3-5 ERA to Bullpen ERA and it's obvious that the more pressing need was the former.
My biggest problem with the overkill of fixing the bullpen after getting Maj, Bray and Guardado. SS and SP were left completely untouched and the early returns are not good.

At least Lohse is starting Saturday. In a totally unrelated topic, they just announced it is Reds Hard Hat Day at the ballpark for all fans in the outfield.

I was at the Twins game today and Boof Bonzer was getting demolished by the Rangers. I had great seats so it was very easy to tell that these guys were stting back and teeing off. He wasn't fooling anyone. The pitching coach came out a few times, but he stayed in the game. It was a head scratcher, but he stayed in clear until he got out of the 4th (where he gave up 5 runs). It was a good example of a manager waiting until the game was out of reach until he finally pulled his pitcher when it wasn't late in the game. I'm not suggesting Narron did this tonight, but it helped confirm the notion that Jerry's not really any different than most ML managers. They all pretty much do the same things most of the time.

Well, we have 13 outs remaining to get at least three runs, and unfortunately I have much less confidence in our ability to do that now than I did a month ago. Here's why ...

Average runs per game before the All-Star Break 5.04
Average runs per game after the All-Star Break 4.53

Average runs allowed before the All-Star Break 5.20
Average runs allowed after the All-Star Break 4.76

Since the All-Star break, the Reds had scored 77 runs while giving up 81 runs (not including tonight). It's a small sample size, but it's interesting to note that the pythag winning percentage for those run totals is .477. Over a full season, that's a 77-85 record.

Of course I like the fact that we've been giving up fewer runs (well, until last night and possibly again tonight), but I'll be honest: I'm worried about the offense now. It is true that Griffey had an unusually lousy month, but on the flip side Dunn had an outstanding month so you'd have to think those two may just cancel each other out.
