Color me confused

The Reds are now saying Kyle Lohse will start Sunday (against Smoltz) and Bronson Arroyo will get the ball Saturday. That means Arroyo will be going on short rest after throwing 109 pitches Tuesday.

Guess we'll have to wait a couple more hours to find out the reasoning behind this one, but I am curious...

Narron really wants Bronson to have a dead arm come September.

So we can have a chance to lose both games intead of just one.

Briliant!

Really makes no sense. I guess it is just a "baseball decision".

Yikes. I'll be at the game on Saturday. I don't want to see Bronson get shelled after short rest. Narron must not want Arroyo to be of any use to the team down the stretch.

Sounds more like the Reds are throwing in the towel against Smoltz.

The only thing I could think of would be Lohse being used while he was with Minnesota and staying on that schedule, but that would put him at close to a week away from being with Minnesota so this doesn't make any sense to me either.

Remthat would be quite an act of desperation for early August :help:

Either that or the fact that Arroyo has a concert scheduled for Sunday night at the Southgate House. Hmmm.

and with us still in contention for the division lead and being in the lead for the wild card.

The only reason I can think of is this means Arroyo will pitch in the Cardinal series, instead of Lohse.

My thinking exactly. I'm actually happy for this move for selfish reasons. I have relatives going to that game, and Arroyo with a dead arm is better than Louse.

fielder's choice (right above me) might've hit on the reason. They probably don't want to trot Louse out there during their big 1/2 price promotion.

I think the Cardinals series explains it the best. I hope it works.

Whatever the day for Bronson, I hope he does better than the last time he threw against the team from Atlanta (last game before All-Star Game, July 9)...

Hopefully Lohse will have better numbers against Atlanta than the mighty Bronson did on July 9. <not holding breath>

That's probably as good a reason as any.

But if Lohse starts Sunday, his turn in the rotation would thereafter be in sync with Homer Bailey's.

Just sayin'.

That's one of the most positive thoughts I've had all day.

Regardless, it would make more sense to keep Bronson on HIS schedule.

It's an afternoon game... his concert starts at 10 PM.

Now that makes sense! I like it.

Bronson was on WEBN yesterday. They didn't talk musch baseball but he did say that his arm feels great.

This is pretty dangerous, Arroyo has been struggling for over a month now and they want to give him less rest?

Yikes.

Didn't Harang throw a shut out on 3 days rest?

Didn't Harang throw a shut out on 3 days rest?

My father-in-law and I were talking when I was out in Missouri and he was talking about how much pitchers threw "in the day", not just lots of innings, but late into the game. I bet he said five times, "Can you imagine what Bob Gibson would tell a Tony LaRussa if he tried to lift him in the 7th or 8th inning?

I know some pitchers say they pitch better tired. How many times do you hear a relief pitcher say their arm felt too strong? Maybe they're nuts, but that's what they say. Maybe this is what Arroyo needs to get over that hump.

Harang is not Arroyo ;)
