Yep, as soon as Narron makes out the card that includes Edwin and Aurillia, just what many have been asking for, the first post is about how bad the defense will be.

What a shocker.

I believe that slam was aimed at Clayton moreso than Aurilia.

Usually you need at least one of your middle infielders to be able to move.

Getting close I guess. But He is still choosing Clayton over Phillips now. Phillips should be at SS and Freel at 2B with Deno taking up RF.

I love this lineup if Phillips is at SS. Also, look for Griffey to really break out with Dunn behind him again.

You can't expect Narron to make ALL the obvious line-up changes in a single month, can you?

I know this sounds insane, but I should be able to expect him to make the change in a single day. But I believe only a doctor can fix his psychological miscues now.

I'm with you guys who are saying Philips at SS now and we're where we need to be! I agree that the defense could be better...but it is no worse than with Clayton at SS. You have to play what you have...and the best the Reds have is Aurilia at 2B, Philips at SS, and Edwin at 3B. (Factoring offense in, of course).

David Cubbedge
08-03-2006, 04:15 PM
I disagree roby. Why not have Freel at 2B, Phillips at SS, EdE at 3B and have Aurilia/Hatteberg platoon vs lefties and righties at 1B respectively?

markymark69
08-03-2006, 04:23 PM
Not bad, Phillips hasn't had a blow in a long time and Aurilia and Encarnacion in the line-up could be a good thing. It would not be a good thing to move Phillips at this stage of the season. If it happens it will be in the off-season and spring training. Valentin has awesome numbers against Maddux. Let's face it, Clayton is going to play.

Phillips came up throughout the minors as a SS. He'll be fine.

But then where do you put Aurillia? You can't just put one of your most productive players on the bench. I already know a lot of you will say, "Why not? Narron put EE on the bench and he has produced." But to me, Aurilla is more valuable to this team than EE. A lot of you are going to disagree with that statement, but a lot of you want EE in there for one reason... His bat. Not only has RA produced offensively this year, but he has also shown that he is solid defensively, even if he doesn't have the range he used to.

Yes, EE has had some great plays recently, but he still hasn't proven that his lapses are behind him. He is improving, but still has a lot to work on. RA has also taken a leadership role IMO. Overall, to this team right now, I think RA is just too valuable to keep out of the lineup. As is Scott Hatteberg for those who say you can just put RA at 1B.

We saw what happened earlier in the season when RA went on the DL. The team just seemed to fall apart. I don't know if that was because of RA not playing, but I think it had something to do with it. In summation, Narron has a lot to consider when putting together a lineup. There is more to think about than most of us take into consideration. Things that don't show up on paper. I will go out on a limb and say that very few of the people on this board, if any, know what is going on in that clubhouse. There is a reason he is getting paid to fill out the lineup card and a reason that fans don't get to choose the lineups unless its an All-Star Game, which is a joke at times anyway.

He has this team in a serious playoff push. I don't think any of us would have believed it at the beginning of the year if we were told that on August 3 the Reds would be where they are now. Something has been going right, and a lot of people would like to think that this team has done what they have despite Narron's stupidity. Well, I for one disagree. I think Narron should be getting a lot of the credit for the season.

I guess part of me is just getting sick of seeing the constant attacks of Narron, and a few of the players. I know that stating your opinion is "what this board is for," and I've heard that at thousand times, but there is a way to state your opinion without attacking the oppsite side of your argument. This team is doing something that a Cincinnati Reds team hasn't done in a long time. Enjoy it, and let Narron run the team. Tell me the lineup you would put out there and your reasons, but don't call Narron an idiot because you disagree with his lineup. If he was an idiot, he wouldn't be where he is today, Managing your Cincinnati Reds. After all, he isn't listening anyway. Have you seen him change a lineup yet because of the complaining?

The only defense you have to worry about tonight is outfield defense. Milton is on the mound. He's usually good for only 3 or 4 grounders a game at most.

I watched just a couple of innings yesterday.....but JR has to be about the worst defensive CF in the game right now. I cannot think of any with less range combined with a weak arm and an apparent lack of desire to really go after a ball.

This is of course just a subjective opinion.....maybe others still see him as serviceable. But he just cannot play the position anymore.....and when you combine him with the lumbering Dunn, left center field is bigger than just a gap, it is more like a canyon.

So if you are talking about defense, consider the lack of defense up the middle, not just at 2B or SS.

MaineRed
08-03-2006, 05:43 PM
I'm not sure you can fix much by moving Griffey at this point, unless it is to first. He and Dunn on the corners would make life tough on Freel/Denorfia.

I honestly don't think Griff is as bad as he looks. He is just trying to stay healthy. He isn't going to run hard down the line on ground balls where he will be out no matter what, 99% of the time and same thing in center. Once he realizes he can't get there, he sort of jogs after the ball. It looks bad on TV but I'm not sure he is hurting us that bad on balls he can't get to. Those gappers that he jogs after are doubles, either way.

This of course is no defense for him staying in center. I think he will be at a new position next year.

RedEye

Here's what I'd put out there:

Freel CF
Hatteberg 1B
Dunn LF
Encarnacion 3B
Griffey RF
Ross C
Aurilia SS
Phillips 2B
Harang P

I honestly believe that this is the best offensive line-up the Reds could field on a day-to-day basis. Possible switches would be Griff to the 3rd spot in the order (if he ever starts hitting consistently again). So that would be this one:

Freel CF
Dunn LF
Griffey RF
Encarnacion 3B
Hatteberg 1B
Ross C
Aurilia SS
Phillips 2B
Harang P

Deno could be inserted instead of Freel in CF (Freel would then go back to being supersub), but I still like Freel as a our best leadoff man. Narron can do what ever he wants defensively with a lead late in the game. With a narrow lead late in the game, I'm all for bringing in the "4 shortstop" infield D of Castro-Clayton-Phillips-Aurilia and putting Dunn-Deno-Freel across the outfield.

What do others think?

I agree.

RA is a nice player, but should not be in there instead of EE. I think RA at second and BP at SS would be nice. RC is a decent player and you could even start him at SS or 2nd a couple times a week, but offensively you have got to get RA, BP, and EE all 3 in there. It would be one thing of RC was a world beater of a defender, but he is not, his range is limited and he has made some pretty boneheaded blunders since becoming a Red.

Against everyone else: 6-11, 4.90 ERA
Against the Reds: 3-0, 2.84 ERA (through the 2nd tonight)

I don't have career numbers but believe he's owned us nearly always. Of course in previous years that was just Maddox, a first ballot Hall of Famer. This year he's gotten beaten around when not playing the Reds!
