I'm still angry that Royce Clayton is our starting SS.
I should be over it by now, but I'm just not.
Most teams have backup SS's that are superior to him.

If we lose, I think it's on the offense. Some games just take a life of their own. Bottom line--we needed to score 1 run in the final three innings to force extras....if you can't do that in this type of game, then that's where I lay the blame. Obviously, if Harang shuts them down tonight, then this is probably an easy win--but this game is what it is and the bottom line is that we desperately need one more run.

Excellent plate appearance by Aurilia there. Isringhausen has been having control problems this season, and he may have a bit of fatigue since he pitched the 8th inning.
We need baserunners and non-out events. Aurilia started it, Ross and the top of the lineup needs to continue it.

One more thing to point out:
Harang wasn't good tonight, BUT..........
He stepped up as a leader, IMO (by example at least).
The entire "feel" of this game changed with that K of Pujols with the bases loaded in the 6th. It was a different game after that. Even if Pujols bloops a single there, it's 8-3 and it's probably game over. Harang got that K and I thought the game changed right there.
Can't wait to hear Marty's call....cause Georgie's was worthless
"it's hit pretty good to centerfield...back Edmonds...did he get enough...yes it's gonna beeeee gone"
You'd think the ball squeeked over the 305 Mark........he hit it on TOP of the batter's eye to dead center, 440?.....everyone knew it was out when they heard the crack of the bat, except Georgie.....WOW.
Dive for that one, Weiner boy!!!!!

And...as hard as I am on Narron at times, I thought he was dead on with his moves tonight, even if it hadn't worked out, he pushed the right buttons. Nice at-bat by Richie in the ninth workin the walk...avoiding outs there was key.
Ross. Man. Sometimes catchers break out late, no? Perhaps this is who he is becoming? Because, damn, the power sure as heck looks legit.

Managing the pitching staff has been his biggest problem IMO. Tonight he pulled AH after the 6th instead of sticking with him (which he is want to do). He used his bullpen confidently and made changes when needed. I thought he did a far better job managing the pitching staff than any time in the recient past.

Sometimes, there's magic in baseball.
:beerme:
Just got back in from the ol' ballpark. Another amazing night of baseball. Sitting in the stands I called (much to the chagrin of everyone sitting with me), prior to the Rolen AB in the 1st: "Rolen will strikeout, then Edmonds will hit the grand slam." I hated being right.
I thought they were cooked going down 4-0 to Carpenter, especially with as few pitches as he threw. I thought going down 6-3 would be demoralizing after the team had crawled back into the game. Once they got back to 6-6, I knew they were going to win this game. There was something in the air at the park tonight that made me believe as long as they were within 1 run in the 9th, they could beat Izzy. This team seemingly feasts on closers who rely on throwing fastballs for strikes.
Some observations from the game:
1. Royce Clayton looks like he's running in quicksand when he fields. He has a slower first step than most corner infielders. The 4 run 1st was, at the very least, 50% his fault with his inability to make plays.
2. Edwin looks really confident at the plate right now. He's making good contact in every one of his ABs, and Narron seems very content to give him the green light in all situations to try and utilize his power.
3. Bench depth makes this team dangerous in the 8th and 9th. When a manager can go and send out hitters like Dave Ross, Rich Aurillia and Javy Valentin on a nightly basis, it really can help transform dead spots in the lineup into productive ABs in a hurry. The 9th innning rally is all for naught if Rich Aurillia doesn't show good patience and take a walk and if Dave Ross isn't off the bench providing late-inning pop.
4. Watching game after game after game in 20,000 man crowds makes winning in front of a packed house all the sweeter. Whatever it takes marketing, promotion or talent wise to keep the crowds coming, make it happen Bob. The excitement level at a sold out ballgame ratchets up 10 notches.
I wish I didn't have to work tomorrow, or I'd be right back in line at 12:30 for tomorrow's game too!

Just got back from the game. Great game tonight. The atmosphere in the stadium was terrific. The fans are really starting to get into being in a pennant race. I agree with CE about Clayton. If this team wants to make the postseason he can't play everyday. He is such a defensive liability I would much rather see Castro out there every day. With Castro that 4 run first would probably have been a 2 run inning for the Cards. The ending was terrific I was jumping up and down so much after the Ross homer I landed on my bobblehead box. Luckily I didn't destroy it. I wish I could go back tomorrow but I have to work. Though in the afternoon I will be at my desk listening on my Myfi. Great news to get a sellout on a 12:35 game.

This might have been George's weakest game of the year, which is REALLY saying something. The guy has got to go.
Even on the post-game show with Welsch, where they are both interviewed, he called the Cards the best team in the NL Central and Welsch, quite funnily, IMO, called him out on it and said, "Hmmm, the Reds just won in a walk-off, I think I'm going to call THEM the best team."
George Grande really really really sucks.

The St. Louis account
Reds come back to beat Cards 8-7
By Joe Strauss
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
Thursday, Aug. 10 2006
CINCINNATI — If the Cardinals needed another painful reminder that this season
will be less forgiving than their last two, Wednesday night at Great American
Ball Park provided an open-handed slap to the face.
Afforded leads of 4-0, 6-3 and 7-6, a team that closed with precision in 2004
and 2005 again fell badly.
The second-place Cincinnati Reds -- the Team That Won't Go Away -- took Chris
Carpenter's start and Jason Isringhausen's finish and transformed them into
something inspirational. When catcher David Ross launched a two-run,
ninth-inning home run to center field some 442 feet away, it provided the Reds
an 8-7 win, a sellout crowd of 41,649 another excuse to believe and the 61-52
Cardinals further proof that this is a grinding season.
The Cardinals achieved the closest thing to a failsafe position when they gave
Carpenter a four-run lead before he made a pitch.
They received an early-inning lift when center fielder Jim Edmonds crushed a
grand slam in his first at-bat since voicing concern about the club's possible
intent to decline his option for 2007.
And still it wasn't enough.
The Cardinals managed 12 hits but stranded 10. Albert Pujols struck out to
leave the bases loaded in the sixth inning and Edmonds flied out to left field
to leave them loaded in the eighth.
"We had our heroes up there a couple times and just missed," manager Tony La
Russa said. "No regrets except the score."
The Reds rallied with three solo home runs in seven innings off Carpenter
before Ross delivered the game-winner off Isringhausen, who suffered his eighth
blown save rather than gaining his 30th conversion.
Even after the Reds tied the score with three runs in the sixth inning, the
Cardinals took a 7-6 eighth-inning lead when shortstop David Eckstein dumped a
one-out single over second base to score Yadier Molina. But they couldn't make
it stand.
Isringhausen entered the eighth inning behind Randy Flores and stranded the
tying run at second base. In the ninth, he walked pinch hitter Rich Aurilia
with one out before being burned on a too-high fastball to Ross.
"I just made a bad pitch to Ross and he hit a home run. It's just the way it
goes," Isringhausen said.
The Reds pulled to 2½ games behind and today can cut the Cardinals' advantage
to its smallest margin since July 3.
"The biggest thing about the home run is it put us at 2 1/2 (games behind)
instead of 4½, which is big," Ross said. "Now we can make it 1½ instead of
worrying about going back to where we were."
The comeback allowed the Reds their ninth walk-off win this season. It also
became the Cardinals' fourth loss when leading after eight innings.
Last season the Cardinals entered Aug. 10 with an 11½-game lead. There is
little resemblance to the 105-win 2004 season or last year's 100-win follow-up.
"Of course it's going to be a grind. We've got a completely different team,"
Edmonds noted. "I don't think half the guys in here know what it's like to win
100 games in a season. This is just another year with a bunch of different
guys. We've got the same core and the same attitude, but we have to grind it
out. It's not going to be any different from what it's been in the past. We're
just not going to have the luxury of winning 100 games and running away with
it. It'll be interesting."
Said Isringhausen, "We haven't pitched as well. We haven't hit as well. That
shows in our record. At this time last year what was our record? (71-41) It's
just been a tough year for everybody."
Further proof of a tough march arrived when third baseman Scott Rolen left the
third inning with back spasms. His replacement, Scott Spiezio, gave the
Cardinals a 6-3 lead with a fifth-inning home run.
Carpenter, meanwhile, pitched five days after a one-hop smash by Milwaukee
Brewers shortstop Bill Hall found his right hand, causing significant swelling
and bruising.
Carpenter allowed more than three earned runs for a third consecutive start.
Only once before in his three active seasons with the Cardinals had Carpenter
had made at least three straight "non-quality" starts. That stretch fell during
last season's final four starts, after Carpenter had all but locked down the
franchise's first Cy Young Award since 1970 and his team had clinched its
division.
The Reds reached him for three home runs. Adam Dunn's second-inning shot made
the score 4-1.
First baseman Scott Hatteberg led off the fourth inning with a solo shot to
pull the Reds within two runs. Two batters later, third baseman Edwin
Encarnacion crushed another, making the first time in this season's 23 starts
Carpenter had given up three home runs in a game.
"We continued to come and play tonight but unfortunately we didn't get it. It's
a game that I should have won," said Carpenter, victimized by 15 earned runs
and five home runs in 17 innings covering his last three starts.
"I thought (Carpenter) was working like he usually works. He got a bunch of
outs. But if he missed, they hit it," La Russa said. "They had eight hits.
There was a lot of damage in those eight hits."
Edmonds put the Cardinals ahead 4-0 before Carpenter threw a pitch by launching
his sixth career slam, this one to the opposite field off Aaron Harang, among a
cluster of pitchers leading the league with 12 wins.
The Cardinals created the situation for Edmonds with consecutive singles by
Eckstein and left fielder Chris Duncan. Eckstein reached on a too-high throw
from shortstop Royce Clayton. Duncan reached base for the first of three times.
Pujols then reached to load the bases when Clayton boxed his ground ball.
Edmonds, who did not appear in Tuesday's 10-3 loss, snapped an 0-for-7 skid by
driving the fourth pitch he saw to the opposite field. For the second time in
the series the Cardinals led by at least four runs before the Reds batted. This
time, on a night when their ace and their closer appeared, it wasn't enough.
"We run into a few snags along the way. I think it will be a grind," Rolen
said. "The hope is that everybody will be ready for a grind."

Random Thought: How shrewd is it to give away a "legend" player bobblehead in August, seeing as it ensures that the team won't be stuck with a 40,000 order of a player that just got shipped out to play in LA (or Washington) at the deadline the week prior?

That's the link to St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Bernie Miklasz's column, which is a must read this morning. The most interesting paragraphs? Try these:
"There is something fresh about these Reds. They're like a college team, with an abundance of energy and enthusiasm. They play stretches of inadequate baseball, but they won't go away. As Ross touched home after his blast, he took his batting helmet and tossed it high into the air, a figure of complete exuberance.
The Cardinals, on the other hand, look stale. After winning 205 regular-season games over the previous two seasons, winning had become a way of life, a business routine, something that came to be viewed as ritual.
There's a stark difference between the dugouts in Cincinnati this week. The Reds are jumping around, bright-eyed and emotional and determined to prove their readiness. The Cardinals are more controlled. They expect to win. Isn't it their right? Isn't it their destiny? But the Reds are teaching the Cardinals a lesson. If you want to win, go grab it. Seize the moment. Nothing will be handed to you."
After Monday night, well, let's say I was skeptical that the last two games would go this way. Thanks again to Ryan Freel's fantastic catch Tuesday night, really turned momentum in a big way...
PS: The comments to the Miklasz piece are a fun read too:

I went to the game last night (I just got home)--and it was awesome! It was probably the most electric moment that I've ever seen at the ballpark! After the game, the crowd was reallt rowdy, cheering loudly and yelling to each other at the gates! It was almost a playoff-type atmosphere!
